The number of people infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in Chile, and especially in the Biobío region, has increased over the last decade, which constitutes a warning sign for healthcare in our country. HIV infection is strongly conditioned by social factors, such as stigma and discrimination, which still are associated with it. These stigmas are manifested in various forms and lead to complex consequences that have a negative influence on prevention, diagnosis, treatment and quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to identify them, in order to propose education strategies for managing HIV patients, starting from the academic training of healthcare students, who as future professionals will probably be in touch with these patients. The objective of this article is to review the phenomenon of social stigma in health care to people with HIV/AIDS by healthcare professionals and students.

This study is designed to assess AIDS knowledge among Homeopathy educators and physicians in India, which has not been evaluated previously. India now has the largest number of HIV infected persons worldwide, with an estimated cumulative 5.1 million infections. Homeopathy is the dominant system among the nationally-recognized alternative or complementary systems of medicine, which collectively provide health care to around 600 million people in India. Homeopathy, with its holistic and patient-centered approach, has a wide reach to people at risk of contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Participants were 68 homeopathy physicians (34 educators and 34 practitioners) who completed a CDC questionnaire measuring HIV/AIDS Knowledge regarding AIDS. This study reports the current level of knowledge of, and attitudes about, HIV/AIDS among homeopathy educators and practitioners. These findings will assist in the development of an education module to equip homeopathic health care personnel to impart accurate AIDS information and prevention counseling to their patients in an efficient manner.

Leprosy (Hansen’s disease) can affect multiple organs and body structures. Skin signs are typically observed in the early phase of the disease, hence being the first identifiable signs to propel clinical suspicion. Leprosy predominantly affects the skin and peripheral nerves. The disease has been documented many centuries preceding the biblical era. Over many decades, the classification of Hansen’s disease has changed as modern medical science evolved. Patients with leprosy are usually subjected to discrimination, rejection from society and can suffer from social stigma, poor quality of life (QoL), low self-esteem and permanent disfigurements. Studies have shown that leprosy has a significant negative impact on the patients’ QoL. Leprosy is often not suspected by practicing clinicians because it is no longer emphasised in the medical curricula. In modern years, attention has gradually shifted from leprosy to tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Abstract: The mass media have always had a great influence on the construction of public opinion. This has been demonstrated with any major contemporary problem, such as HIV / AIDS, whose presence in the films has served to raise awareness and image about the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This work aims to know how HIV is represented in the films released between 1981 and 1991. That is, during the first decade since the identification of the first clinical case of this virus. For this, four productions have been analyzed: An Early Frost, Parting Glances, The Fly and Longtime Companion. The analysis of the content of these films has allowed us to determine how HIV was presented. On the one hand, from the social perspective, it was observed that in all the films the fears and prejudices towards said virus become visible. In addition, HIV was associated (almost) only with the gay community. In contrast, it could be seen that the medical procedures and the forms of HIV transmission shown were correct, with greater precision and realism in the films released in the final years of the analysis period. This reflection article deals with the nursing profession and its skills. The discussion begins with the birth of nursing and how it has advanced from the angel of nursing to scientific technical nursing in some parts of the world. The aim of this paper is to present a new kind of nurse, the patient advocate and its relation with clinical economics. The work of the “Patient Advocate” is based in the best health care, observing lower costs of resources, particularly those which affect the patient’s quality of life, and identifying and questioning the team’s decisions which are not supported by the principles of clinical economics. As a result, “Patient Advocate” is a proposal that encourages social actors to invest in the academic training of nursing personnel as well as in improving nurses’ clinical and methodological competency, proactivity, and leadership in relation to health care.
