With the first direct election to the European Parliament in the fall of 1979, there has been a renewed interest in the study of the European Community. While very few American universities offer courses on the European Community, more college and universities are including some coverage of the Community through course offerings on European politics or the study of international organizations. There are several reasons why the European Community is today receiving more attention by scholars and researchers. With the addition of three states in 1973, the nine member organization has become a significant economic force in the world. And because of the Community's economic importance, its decisions also have social and political implications.

The aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between individual leaders’ career trajectories and organizational structure and identity in Italian civil society organizations (CSOs) active at national level. The analysis in this qualitative study draws on two sets of data, semi-structured interviews with leaders on their career trajectories and their understanding of what it takes to become a leader of a CSO and short biographies of leaders’ career trajectories. Three main representational logics are idenitified: within: multi-level, within: member-organization, and outside: supporting organization. The two first logics are based on a trajectory within the organizations either departing from the local and regional levels of the same organizations or within one or more member organizations. The third logic is based on a trajectory outside the organization that is marked by the ideological affiliation of the president through leading positions in other organizations within the same movement or field.

Abstract The National Association of Geriatric Education Centers organization was established in 1990, to promote interdisciplinary geriatric education and to provide a unified voice for Geriatric Education Centers (GECs). In 2005, the GECs voted to form two non-profit organizations due to restrictions related to lobbying activities. An umbrella organization was created, the National Association for Geriatric Education, that includes all geriatric related education programs, and maintain a lobbyist in Washington DC to protect the GECs interests. It was a pivotal time, as we had a year (2006) without federal funding that summarily dismantled the DHHS-HRSA geriatrics programs, including the entire GEC network, the geriatric fellowship program, and Geriatric Academic Career Awards. This resulted in a GEC-wide and national geriatrics movement that succeeded in restoring the geriatrics line item in the President’s budget. Our advocacy efforts not only had the line item restored, but obtained an increase in funding for geriatrics.

As 2015 progresses, there have been additional changes to LRTS. In addition to the new e-only format, the journal has transitioned from a commercial hosting service to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. There are several advantages of moving to OJS. First is cost savings, which are important for a member organization. OJS offers the ability to customize the platform to provide services and information that will improve access and irretrievability. OJS will also enable us to consider new functionalities. The new website is available at http://journals.ala.org/lrts and I encourage you to try it. The new website is part of an open house that ALA is promoting for three months (April-June 2015) for some of its journals. Your feedback regarding the new website is welcome.
