Let ψ be any real non-singular second-order cartesian tensor. Let N be an arbitrary unit vector and let the vector R ( N ) be given by R ( N ) = ψN . Then it is shown here that there is at least one special circle of directions for N such that the corresponding R S also lie on a circle. Further, if θ is the angle between a pair of these special directions, N ' and N " (say), then θ is also the angle between R ( N' ) and R ( N" ). The number of special circles is equal to the number of central circular sections of a certain ellipsoid : one, if the ellipsoid is a spheroid; two, if the axes of the ellipsoid are unequal; infinity, if the ellipsoid is a sphere.

The effects of submaximal performances on critical speed (SCrit) and critical power (PCrit) were studied in 3 protocols: a constant-speed protocol (protocol 1), a constant-time protocol (protocol 2) and a constant-distance protocol (protocol 3). The effects of submaximal performances on SCrit and PCrit were studied with the results of two theoretical maximal exercises multiplied by coefficients lower or equal to 1 (from 0.8 to 1 for protocol 1; from 0.95 to 1 for protocols 2 and 3): coefficient C1 for the shortest exercises and C2 for the longest exercises. Arbitrary units were used for exhaustion times (tlim), speeds (or power-output in cycling) and distances (or work in cycling). The submaximal-performance effects on SCrit and PCrit were computed from two ranges of tlim (1–4 and 1–7). These effects have been compared for a low-endurance athlete (exponent = 0.8 in the power-law model of Kennelly) and a high-endurance athlete (exponent = 0.95). Unexpectedly, the effects of submaximal performances on SCrit and PCrit are lower in protocol 1. For the 3 protocols, the effects of submaximal performances on SCrit, and PCrit, are low in many cases and are lower when the range of tlim is longer. The results of the present theoretical study confirm the possibility of the computation of SCrit and PCrit from several submaximal exercises performed in the same session.

Human serum was dried in this department at the outbreak of war with a view to its possible use as a stable substitute for whole blood for transfusion purposes. In the absence of any definite knowledge of dosage, the arbitrary unit of 200 c. c. was chosen, because this was approximately the amount of serum which could be obtained from a pint of clotted blood, and also because this amount of serum could conveniently be frozen before drying in 12 oz. medical-flat bottles. The technique of freezing was to place the bottles of serum on racks in a cold-room maintained at –20° C, the racks being slightly inclined from the horizontal so that the serum froze in a wedge, thus giving a reasonably large surface from which evaporation could occur during the drying process. Large amounts of human serum have been dried by sublimation from the frozen state on apparatus based on the experimental model described by Greaves & Adair (1939), after prefreezing by this simple technique.

Abstract Background Long Pentraxin-3 (PTX3) has been known as an emerging cardiac biomarker and has potential diagnostic and prognostic value in coronary heart disease. Whether plasma PTX3 level is associated with post procedural myocardial perfusion assessed by quantitative blush evaluator (QuBE) in acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is unknown. Purpose This study sought to evaluate the association between plasma PTX3 level and post procedural myocardial perfusion assessed by QuBE in patients with acute STEMI undergoing primary PCI. Methods We enrolled 217 patients with acute STEMI who underwent primary PCI (men=191, women=26). Post procedural myocardial perfusion was evaluated using QuBE. PTX3 level was measured at admission by an ELISA method. We used 0.33 ng/mL for PTX3 level as a cut off point for future worse clinical outcome as shown by previous study. Impairment of myocardial perfusion was defined as QuBE <9 arbitrary unit as also shown by previous studies. Results Plasma PTX3 level had an inverse correlation with QuBE score (r=−0.64, p<0.001). Patients in elevated PTX3 group (≥0.33 ng/mL; N=80) had lower median QuBE score compared with lower PTX3 group (<0.33ng/mL; N=137), with QuBE score (8.6 arbitrary unit vs. 15.1 arbitrary unit, P<0.001). Multivariate logistic analysis showed that plasma PTX3 level ≥0.33 ng/mL (OR=7.65, p<0.001) along with Diabetes Mellitus (OR=2.30, p=0.04), and Killip class II-IV (OR=2.57, p=0.04) were independent predictors of impaired myocardial perfusion, as shown by QuBE score <9 arbitrary unit. Analysis between PTX3 and low QuBE score Variables Multivariate OR (95% CI) P value PTX3 ≥0.33 ng/mL 7.65 (3.37–17.36) <0.001 Diabetes Mellitus 2.30 (1.01–5.23) 0.04 Hypertension 1.15 (0.47–2.82) 0.75 Killip class II-IV 2.57 (1.04–6.35) 0.04 IRA LAD 3.79 (1.64–8.78) 0.002 Thrombus grade 4 & 5 3.36 (1.06–11.98) 0.04 Post PPCI TIMI flow <3 5.29 (2.09–13.36) 0.001 PTX3, pentraxin-3; QuBE, quantitative blush evaluator; IRA, infarct related artery. Conclusions Patients with acute STEMI with high plasma PTX3 level were associated with reduced myocardial perfusion after primary PCI shown by low QuBE score. Elevated PTX3 level may be used as a marker for persistent impairment of myocardial perfusion after primary PCI in STEMI

Background: Tobacco chewing is attributed to oral cancer. Prediction of cancer development by genotoxicity analysis is a major challenge to identify tobacco users at greater risk. Therefore, present study aimed to analyze tobacco related genotoxic effects in chewers monitoring micronuclei (MN) and chromosome aberrations (CA). The biomarkers were compared with non chewer to (i) predict risk for genotoxicity, (ii) estimate synergistic effect of tobacco exposure with level of biomarkers, and (iii) identify best cellular site of measurements for genotoxicity assessment. Methods: Healthy tobacco chewers (n=47); and controls (n=48) were enrolled in the study. The peripheral blood lymphocyte and exfoliated buccal mucosa cells were studied for CA and micro nucleated cell count (MNC) respectively. An arbitrary unit was obtained for Lifetime Tobacco Exposure (LTE) using frequency/day multiplied by duration of years of tobacco use. Data were analyzed using SPSS statistical software. Results: MNC was significantly higher (p=0.001) in chewers than controls. CA was higher in chewers than controls. MNC can differentiate higher tobacco exposure in chewers than CA. Controls having MNC above cutoff level have greater risk of genotoxic exposition (95% C.I.; 1.462-23.26, p=0.012). Conclusion: The present study concludes that MNC is a better surrogate biomarker to predict genotoxicity than CA for tobacco exposure and DNA damage index in tobacco chewers.

Mollusc species were sampled in different sites based on pollution level in Poyang lake and its surrounding waters during withered water period (from Oct to Dec) and plentiful water period (from May to June) from 2007 to 2008. Single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) was used to analyze their haemolymph cells Arbitrary Unit(AU) and Olive tailmoment (OTM) value of DNA damage in molluca. The results showed that the mean DNA damage value Jin river>Nanxin>Xiu stream in withered water period; and in Plentiful water period, Hukou>Qinglan lake>Xiyuan. Two mollusc species Corbicula fluminea and Bellamya aeruginosa have higher DNA damage value than other mussel in all sites. Comparing the DNA damage value of Bellamya aeruginosa collected in twenty sites in 2008, the highest DNA damage value was observed in Dacha lake and lowest in Xiyuan. Meanwhile, the highest DNA damage value of Unio douglasiae was recorded Chucha river from ten sites, and lowest in Xiyuan river.
