A previous investigation, reported at the Winter Meeting 1985, showed significant effects of growth promoters on carcass composition and on the eating quality of sirloin steaks. The growth promoters investigated factorially were (a) hormonal implants (heifers, Zeranol; steers, Zeranol + Trembolone acetate), (b) feed additive (Avotan) and (c) fishmeal. The experiment was repeated during the winter of 1984/85, with the eating quality investigation expanded to cover some 192 households, using sirloin steaks from all 64 cattle involved in the investigation. In addition, the rate of carcass cooling in the left-hand side of each animal was measured using electronic probe thermometers placed in the longissimus dorsi immediately after slaughter. This data was used to test the hypothesis that rate of carcass cooling was negatively related to the fat content of the carcass and with overall eating quality due to the effects of cold shortening.

In this study, a certain amount of Cerium and Arsenic were closed in the barrel-shaped cylinder machined by H08 steel, heated to 1173 K for 50 h, and the interaction among the cerium, arsenic and iron in the barrel-shaped cylinder was studied by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and electronic probe microscopy analysis. The result shows that the gray phase is the ternary compound Ce12Fe57.5As41, and the ternary compound Ce12Fe57.5As41 is the main interaction product when the atomic ratio of Ce to As is 1:3. The eutectic compound Fe2As can be precipitated from ferrite with the temperature decreasing.

The electronic probe provides a simple means to detect eustachian tube patency, and can be used as a sensitive probe of objective tinnitus. The basic unit consists of a battery-operated, electronic amplifier connected by 18-in leads to a sensitive microphone and to a small speaker (Fig 1). These transducers are each connected to rubber nipples of the type used for impedance audiometry (Fig 2).

Attachment level has been used as the "gold standard" for assessment of the progression of periodontal disease. However, the measurement of attachment level by periodontal probing can be subject to a large number of error sources. Recently, we have designed experiments by using an electronic probe to identify the magnitude of error components due to the instrument, gingival tissue condition, position or probing angle, and time interval between replicate probings. Even with a very careful clinical setting, a few percent of uncontrollable large errors or outliers could not be avoided. A previously used 'option-3' probing scheme to reduce the unexpected large error is justified from the mathematical viewpoint.
