Aim:To investigate the prevalence of otolaryngological symptoms with Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) in TMD patients. Materials and Methods: In this cross sectional study, the sample consisted of 172 TMD patients, both males and females of 18-59 years. Diagnosis of TMD was based on Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC-TMD) Axis 1. The prevalence of otolaryngological symptoms was determined using questionnaire. Results: Of the 172 TMD patients evaluated, 81 patients were having Muscular disorder alone or combined with Intracapsular disorder. Out of the 81 patients having muscular disorder, 74 had ear symptoms (91.4%). Conclusion: A high prevalence (91.4%) of Otolaryngological symptoms with TMD was found in the present study. Ruling out causes of ear symptoms other than TMD by an ENT specialist is essential before proceeding with the treatment of these category of patients for a better prognosis.

This is a case study with a phenomenological approach on the experience of a woman who works in nursing and suffers from the de Quervain's disease, an osteo-muscular disorder related to working conditions. This study aimed to understand what means to be a woman working in nursing and suffering from an osteo-muscular disorder related to working conditions through a worker of the Material and Sterilization Center of a private hospital. The philosophical referential from Martin Heidegger was used for the comprehensive analysis of the statement in question. The analysis revealed that the physiopathological process of the de Quervain's disease caused changes in the worker's life, characterized by painful manifestations and especially by physical limitations, which generate a multiplicity of feelings. Anguish is present in the process of accepting the disease, when the worker perceives the fragility of her existence and recognizes herself as the one responsible for her own care, reaching authenticity and transcending the disease.

Thirteen adult mutant (LWC strain) Japanese quails ( Coturnix coturnix japonica), between the ages of 8 and 60 weeks were examined for a progressive muscular disorder. The disorder, inherited as an autosomal dominant trait, was clinically apparent as early as 28 days of age; it was characterized by generalized myotonia, muscle stiffness, and muscle weakness. Affected birds were identified by their inability to lift their wings vertically upward and by their inability to right themselves when placed on their dorsum. Electromyographic studies in two mutant quails showed high-frequency repetitive discharges comparable to those of myotonic runs. These discharges persisted after nerve resection. The distinctive histopathologic changes in the various muscles examined were ring fibers, sarcoplasmic masses, and internal migration of sarcolemmal nuclei. A slight decrease in the size of type IIB muscle fibers and a slight increase in the size of type IIA fibers were observed in the M. pectoralis thoracicus of affected quails. In older affected birds, inter- and intrafascicular fatty infiltration with replacement of type IIB fibers by fat cells was seen in the pectoral muscles. Single fiber necrosis, nonspecific lymphorrages, and variations in the muscle fiber size and shape were also noted. The typical muscle lesions and multisystem involvement, which was manifested by testicular degeneration and atrophy in the male LWC specimens and bilateral lenticular cataracts in 6 of 13 affected mutant quails, suggest resemblance of this new inherited muscular disorder to myotonic dystrophy in man.

This paper is dedicated to the improvement of diagnosis quality of combined forms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) by means of characteristic of their structure. In research, the combination varieties of TMD different forms were determined and analyzed due to the examination results of 114 patients and peculiarities of disorders’ distribution taking into account the patients’gender were studied. The percentage of patients with a combination of different forms of TMD made up (51.8+4.7)%, i.e., every second TMD patient was subjected to the course of several different disorders simultaneously. Among them the percentage of women – (88.1±4.2) %, men– (11.9±4.2) %, the women/men ratio was equal to 7.4:1.0 correspondingly. Among the varieties of a combination of different forms of TMD, the percentage of the option «muscular disorder + TMJ internal disorder» was (37.3±6.3) %, «muscular disorder + arthritis» – (33.9±6.2) %, other options of combined disorders were (28.8±5.7) %. The obtained results point to the necessity of primary consideration on the symptoms reveal of TMJ internal disorders and muscular disorders that combine most frequently, when performing differential diagnosis.

In 1876 the Danish physician, Julius Thomas Thomsen, described the disease entity of myotonia congenita, from which he himself and some members of his family suffered. This muscular disorder is now accepted as a clinical and genetic entity, distinct from other forms of myotonia, viz. dystrophia myotonica and paramyotonia (De Jong, 1955).

<p><strong>AIMS: </strong>To evaluate influence of variables gender, diagnosis and severity of types of Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) on the quality of life of the individual. <strong>METHODS: </strong>The sample consisted of one hundred one individuals seeking TMD treatment at the Faculdade de Odontologia/ Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora. The TMD diagnosis was done through the RDC/TMD: Axis I (<em>Research Diagnostic Criteria/Temporomandibular Disorder)</em>. The severity of TMD was established by the Temporomandibular Index (TMI) and the impact on quality of life by the OHIP-14 (<em>Oral Health Impact Profile</em>). The data was tabulated and analyzed by the Mann-Whitney test, T student test and Spearman correlation analysis (α=0,05). <strong>RESULTS: </strong>Most patients had diagnosis of muscular disorder, followed by diagnoses of arthralgia and disk displacement, respectively. All patients had a negative impact on at least one question from OHIP-14.<strong><strong>CONCLUSIONS</strong>: </strong>Women presented worse quality of life when compared to men. The presence of muscular disorder was related to greater impact on quality of life (p&lt;0,05). The relationship between severity of TMD and quality of life in the muscle sub-index of TMI was observed in all domains of OHIP-14 (p&lt;0,05). In addition, there was positive correlation between TMI and the psychological incapacity.</p>
