The aging-related decrease in cVEMP amplitude cannot be accounted for by normalization

BACKGROUND: Cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (cVEMP) is an electromyogenic measure commonly used in clinic to assess saccule function. The main parameters are peak-peak amplitude and interaural asymmetry ratio (IAR). Several non-vestibular factors may influence these parameters. Notably, a greater EMG contraction level prior to stimulation leads to an increased amplitude. As aging impacts both vestibular structures and muscle propreties, it is still a matter of debate whether the decrease in cVEMP amplitude observed in normal aging is due to EMG differences prior to stimulation or to the effect of aging on the sacculo-collic reflex pathway. At the clinical level, understanding the effect of aging on the relationship between EMG activity and cVEMP response (amplitude, asymmetry ratio) and the effect of normalization is crucial to improving the categorization of healthy versus pathological responses. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether normalization modifies cVEMP amplitude and asymmetry ratios differently in younger and older heatlhy adults. METHOD: cVEMP recordings were conducted in 42 normal healthy participants divided in two age groups: younger (n = 29): mean = 22.79 years old SD = 1.66; and older (n = 13): mean = 69.00 years old SD = 3.61. Air-conducted cVEMP were recorded using Eclipse (Interacoustics, Denmark). The stimulus was a 95 dBnHL tone burst (500 Hz) with rise, plateau and fall time of 1 ms. cVEMP were recorded only when EMG levels were between 50μV and 150μV, using the Eclipse (Interacoustic, Denmark) monitoring system. RESULTS: No significant differences were observed for prestimulus EMG levels between younger and older participants (F(1,83) = 1.13, p = 0.291). However, significant differences between groups were observed for raw cVEMP amplitude (F(1,83) = 14.78; p <  0.001) and corrected cVEMP amplitude (F(1,83) = 21.85; p <  0.0001). A significant positive linear relationship between prestimulus EMG contraction level (RMS) and raw cVEMP amplitude was observed in younger participants (r2 = 0.234; p <  0.001), but not in older adults (r2 = –0.0144; p = 0.056). Finally, no significant differences between younger and older participants were observed for raw amplitude asymmetry ratios (F(1,41) = 0.124, p = 0.726) or normalized asymmetry ratios (F(1,41) = 0.726, p = 0.508). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that when EMG is monitored and activation of the SCM is sufficient, the observed decline in cVEMP amplitude with normal aging does not seem to be caused by EMG differences and is therefore likely due to the known histopathological modifications of the vestibular system that occurs with normal aging.

BACKGROUND An electronic personal health record (ePHR), also known as a personal health record (PHR), was broadly defined as an electronic application through which individuals can access, manage, and share their health information in a secure and confidential environment. Although ePHRs can benefit individuals as well as caregivers and healthcare providers, the use of ePHRs among individuals continues to remain low. The relationship between age and ePHRs use has been documented in previous studies, which indicated younger age was related to higher ePHRs use, and patients who are younger were more likely to use ePHRs. OBJECTIVE The current study aims to examine the relationship between human-technology interaction factors and ePHRs use among adults, and then compare the different effects of human-technology interaction factors on ePHRs use between younger adults (18-54 years old) and older adults (55 years of age and over). METHODS We analyzed the from the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS5, Cycle 3) collected from U.S. adults aged 18 years old and over in 2019. Descriptive analysis was conducted for all variables and each item of ePHRs use. Bivariate tests (Pearson test for categorical variable and F-test for continuous variables) were conducted over four age groups. Lastly, adjusting for socio-demographics and healthcare resources, a weighted multiple linear regression was conducted to examine the relationship between human-technology interaction factors and ePHRs use. RESULTS The final sample size was 1,363 and divided into two age groups: 18-54 years old and 55 years of age and older. The average level of ePHRs use was low (Mean=2.76, range=0-8). There is no significant difference on average ePHRs use between two age groups. Including clinical notes was positively related to ePHRs use in both groups: 18-54 years old (beta=0.28, P<0.01), 55 years old and above (beta=0.15, P<0.01). While accessing ePHRs using a smartphone app was only associated with ePHRs use among younger adults (beta=0.29, P<0.001), ease to understand health information in ePHRs was positively linked to ePHRs use only among older adults (beta=0.13, P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS This study found that including clinical notes was positively related to ePHRs use in both age groups, which suggested that including clinical notes as a part of ePHRs might improve the effective use of ePHRs among patients. Moreover, accessing ePHRs using a smartphone app was associated with higher ePHRs use among younger adults while ease of understanding health information in ePHRs was linked to higher ePHRs use among older adults. The design of ePHRs should provide the option of being accessible through mobile devices to promote greater ePHRs use among young people. For older adults, providers could add additional notes to explain health information recorded in the ePHRs.

Objective: The study aims to detect the potential relationship between iron deposition and the function of the glymphatic system in the normal aging brain.Methods: We recruited 213 healthy participants. We evaluated the function of the glymphatic system using the index for diffusivity along the perivascular space (ALPS-index), assessed iron deposition on quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM), and analyzed their relationship.Results: The mean age of participants was 60.1 ± 7.3, and 107 (50.2%) were female. The mean ALPS-index was 1.4 ± 0.2. The QSM values of the caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus, thalamus, red nucleus, substantia nigra, and dentate nucleus were all related to the ALPS-index (all P &lt; 0.001).Conclusions: The main finding of the current study is that the regional brain iron deposition was related to the function of the glymphatic system.Advances in knowledge: We first evaluated the relationship between deposition of brain iron and the dysfunction of the glymphatic system.

This study aims to examine spending patterns in the millennial generation in Surabaya. Respondents of this study were the millennial generation who were divided into two age groups, namely 21-28 years old, who were referred to as junior millennials, and those aged 29-36 years who were referred to as senior millennials. The analysis technique used is a crosstab to examine the relationship between age and spending pattern of the millennial generation and an independent-sample t-test to test the difference between the spending pattern of the junior millennials and senior millennials. This study showed a significant relationship between age and spending pattern on the millennial generation, and there is a significant difference between the spending pattern of the junior millennials and senior millennials.

A tone-burst stimulation of 500 Hz seems to be clinically most appropriate to elicit vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) because those VEMPs can be recorded at the lowest stimulus intensity possible. However, little is known about gender and age-related changes of the amplitude in tone-burst (500 Hz) evoked VEMPs. The aim of the present paper was therefore to investigate the influence of gender and age on VEMP amplitude in relation to the tonic muscle activity. VEMPs of 64 healthy subjects were recorded ipsilaterally during air- or bone-conducted tone burst stimulation. The EMG of the tonically activated sternocleidomastoid muscle was recorded ipsilaterally with surface electrodes. Averages were taken for P1/N1 amplitudes of male and female volunteers within 3 different age groups. Although the amplitude decreased with increasing age the tonic activity was not significant different between the age groups. Consequently the relation between VEMP amplitude and tonic muscle activity decreased with increasing age. The normative values of the age-dependent relation between VEMP amplitude and tonic muscle activity were described by the 90% confidence interval of the individual values. Normative thresholds were calculated. Normal saccular receptor function could be diagnosed if the VEMP amplitude is above (or equal to) the normative value at a given tonic muscle activity and age. Normative data as described above are required to diagnose isolated saccular defects, which are indicative of a vestibular disorder.

One aspect of social perception often noted as deficient in learning disabled individuals is an appropriate sense of humor. The purpose of this study was to examine the cartoon humor comprehension of learning disabled and non-handicapped boys in two age groups, 8- and 12-year-olds. The cognitive structure rather than the content of humor was the focus. In addition to examining comprehension of cartoon humor between groups and across age levels, the relationship between comprehension and appreciation measures was studied. Significant main effects were found indicating a developmental lag for the learning disabled subjects. Moderate correlations were established between comprehension and appreciation measures.

In the assessment of the demographic age and ageing a lot of measures are being exploited. Among the most commonly used may be mentioned those which express the relationship between the number of people in two age groups (the elderly and the general population or younger age group). Rarely are used such measures, which take into account all the age structure of the population. The article presents a new method to analyze spatial diversity of the population age structure using the method of agglomeration with the Euclidean metric. The test objects were the voivodships (provinces), and the explanatory variables were five-year age groups (20 variables). In addition, a hypothetical business was introduced, which has a regressive age structure. Its introduction allowed for an evaluation of how the test regions differ not only among themselves, but also how far they deviate from the pattern of development of the Polish population. Considerations were conducted separately for men and women and the 1991, 2001, 2011.

This study aimed to analyze the relationship between perceived aquatic competence (PAC) and real aquatic competence (RAC) in 6 to 10 year old children in skills identified as relevant for surviving an aquatic accident. The study sample consisted of 105 children (8.2 + 1.3 years old). Two age groups were examined separately [G1, 6 to 7 years (n = 53); G2, 8 to 10 years (n = 52)]. Children’s aquatic competence was evaluated twice for skills linked to the risk of drowning: Firstly, using a common swimsuit (simple condition) and secondly wearing a t-shirt (complex condition). The PAC was assessed by questionnaire interview. Pearson correlation coefficients, pairwise, and independent t-test comparisons were performed with a significance level of 5%. Similar levels of PAC were found among both age groups for all measured skills, excepted for breath control during swimming (p < 0.05). However, PAC differs significantly (p < 0.001) from RAC (in simple and complex conditions) only in G1. Correlations between PAC and RAC were modest for all measured skills in both age-groups. Significant differences were found between RAC in simple and complex conditions in both groups (p < 0.01). Age contributes to a higher perceived aquatic competence in skills related to the risk of drowning.

In the present study we have developed the agar-fill method for the measurement of gastrointestinal-tract capacity (GTC) to replace the in vitro water-fill method. This would estimate GTC without using complex equipment and techniques, and can be applied to the measurement of GTC for small laboratory animals. We attempted to confirm the efficiency of the agar-fill method by investigating the relationship between dietary neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) content and GTC. The digestion trials were carried out using the Syrian hamster (Mesocricefus auretus). The trials were conducted using both sexes, two age-groups and three levels of dietary NDF with a cross-classified design. The size of each gastrointestinal organ was determined as tissue weight(TW)and GTC. The DM intake, digestible DM intake, DM digestibility, NDF digestibfity, aciddetergent fibre(ADF) digestibfity and digesta transit time were also measured. GTC increased with increasing NDF content of the diets. TW responded similarly to increasing NDF content, but the response was smaller than that of GTC. DM digestibility decreased with increasing NDF content of the diet. The digestible DM intake did not decrease with increasing NDF because DM intake increased with NDF content. Digesta transit time was not shorter of the high-NDF-diet group but DM intake increased with increasing NDF content. NDF digestibility did not differ significantly between low- and medium-NDF diets. ADF digestibility was low in the low-NDF-diet group.The digestion characteristics were highly correlated with TW and GTC, except for TW of small intestine. These correlations were higher with GTC than with TW. The results of the present study confirm previous findings suggesting that the agar-fill method is a useful means of estimating GTC for small laboratory animals.

The curved sprint test is the most commonly used test in team sports. From a practical point of view, it would be interesting to know to what extent it is related to a direct sprint and a sprint involving changes in direction. This study investigated the relationship between the times taken by soccer players in the curved sprint test, repeated sprint test involving changes in direction, and change-of-direction speed test. Two age groups of soccer players U15 and U17 (n = 22) took the curved sprint test, the repeated straight sprint test, and the repeated straight sprint test involving changes in direction. The total time taken in the curved sprint test did not differ significantly from the total time taken in the repeated straight sprint test (46.80 ± 1.85 s and 34.51 ± 1.66 s, respectively; T = 120). The total time taken in the curved sprint test was not significantly different from the total time taken in the repeated straight sprint test involving changes in direction (46.80 ± 1.85 s and 82.36 ± 4.47 s, respectively; T = 115). There was no significant correlation between the total times taken in the curved sprint test (CST) and the repeated sprint test involving changes in direction (RSCD) (r = 0.180). There was also no significant correlation between the total times taken in the curved sprint test (CST) and the repeated straight sprint test (RSST) (r = 0.301). The non-significant relationship between these abilities implies that they are independent of each other and may have to be tested and trained complementarily.

Abstract Age-related effects were studied in 14 younger (M = 34 years) and 14 (M = 47 years) older healthy participants. Event-related potential (ERP) recording was done using a 256-channel EEG system. Results indicated that ERP is affected by advanced age. There was a significant difference in P200 mean latency between the younger participants and older participants for the target (low-probability) stimuli, but no such significance was evident for the P200 mean latency during the presentation of the standard (high-probability) stimuli. As for the P200 mean peak amplitude, the results for the target (low-probability) stimuli did show a significant difference between the two age groups, while the results for the standard (high-probability) stimuli did not show any significant difference between the two age groups. The results of this study are explained in light of aging effects on attentional recruitment and frontal lobe intactness.
