Bistable permanent magnet actuator based on double wing magnetic flux

This letter presents a bistable permanent magnet actuator, based on double wing magnetic fluxes (DWMF) formed by the structure of welding sleeve and slotted armature. The double wing magnetic fluxes consist of high wing magnetic flux (HWMF) and low wing magnetic flux (LWMF), resulting in bistable performance under differentiating control. Parameters improvement around DWMF is analyzed based on modeling, and optimized results for a prototype actuator are obtained. The experimental and simulation results agree well, and show that the prototype actuator can realize bistable performance under the DC step voltage drive, with the holding force of 8.2 N (without current) and the restoring force of −31.7 N (with negative current), the dynamic results show that the displacement response time within 8 mm is 28 ms, of which the actuation time is 16.5 ms, the transient maximum power consumption of the restoring period is 18 W.

Bistable permanent magnet actuator (BPMA) has been widely used in on/off application. However, the response time and landing performance of on/off actuator are contradictory. Through analyzing the landing control goal of on/off actuator and sensorless technology features of the BPMA, a new sensorless landing control strategy was proposed using armature position detection instead of real-time displacement estimation or displacement sensor. The feasibility and effectiveness of the method are verified by experiment and simulation, the operation quality of BPMA is effectively improved. The results show that the first bounce decreases by 85.7% and the second bounce is avoided when the iteration converged, compared to the condition without landing control, while the response time increased by 6.8%. Meanwhile, the landing velocity decreased more than 50% and sound intensity at different frequencies reduced more than 4dB with sensorless landing control strategy. Although in this paper the control strategy was employed to a BPMA, its structure can be used to analyze and design a wide range of on/off actuator.

To solve the problem of reduction of suspension force of permanent magnet system with variable magnetic flux path control, according to the structure of the system, suspension principle of the permanent magnet system with variable magnetic flux path control and the generation principle of the load torque, the influence of the mechanical structure of the system on the suspension force is analyzed by changing part of parameters of the system structure. The results show that the existence of magnetic isolation plate is the main reason for the decrease of suspension force, the permanent magnet ring can be thickened to 11.91 mm, the annular gap can be reduced to 1 mm, thickness of the “F” shaped magnetizer can be increased to 9 mm to increase the suspension force.

In this paper, a novel dual-stator permanent magnet machine (DsPmSynM) with low cost and high torque density is designed. The winding part of the DsPmSynM adopts phase-group concentrated-coil windings, and the permanent magnets are arranged by spoke-type. Firstly, the winding structure reduces the amount of copper at the end of the winding. Secondly, the electromagnetic torque ripple of DsPmSynM is suppressed by reducing the cogging torque. Furthermore, the dynamic performance of DsPmSynM is studied. Finally, the experimental results are compared with the simulation results.

In the linear and planar motors, the 1D Halbach magnet array is extensively used. The sinusoidal property of the magnetic field deteriorates by analyzing the magnetic field at a small air gap. Therefore, a new 1D Halbach magnet array is proposed, in which the permanent magnet with a curved surface is applied. Based on the superposition of principle and Fourier series, the magnetic flux density distribution is derived. The optimized curved surface is obtained and fitted by a polynomial. The sinusoidal magnetic field is verified by comparing it with the magnetic flux density of the finite element model. Through the analysis of different dimensions of the permanent magnet array, the optimization result has good applicability. The force ripple can be significantly reduced by the new magnet array. The effect on the mass and air gap is investigated compared with a conventional magnet array with rectangular permanent magnets. In conclusion, the new magnet array design has the scalability to be extended to various sizes of motor and is especially suitable for small air gap applications.

Strong flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), launched from δ-sunspots, are the most catastrophic energy-releasing events in the solar system. The formations of δ-sunspots and relevant polarity inversion lines (PILs) are crucial for the understanding of flare eruptions and CMEs. In this work, the kink-stable, spot-spot-type δ-sunspots induced by flux emergence are simulated, under different subphotospheric initial conditions of magnetic field strength, radius, twist, and depth. The time evolution of various plasma variables of the δ-sunspots are simulated and compared with the observation data, including magnetic bipolar structures, relevant PILs, and temperature. The simulation results show that magnetic polarities display switchbacks at a certain stage and then split into numerous fragments. The simulated fragmentation phenomenon in some δ-sunspots may provide leads for future observations in the field.

The Equivalent Turn Number of Coil (ETNC) is proposed for induction coil design. Simulation results show that the vibrationonthe induction coil’s structure. The optimized coil is composed by two symmetry parts on the condition of sinusoidal vibration. The effective value of output EMF of optimized coil increases 51.39% than uniform coil’s. In the experiment, the optimized and uniform coils are fabricated with 600 turns and comparatively studied in the same vibration-to-electrical generator. The test results show that the peak-to-peak value and effective value of output EMF of the optimized coil can increase up to 52.59% and 48.76%, respectively, compared with the uniform coil.

This study aims to observe the influence of the changing stator dimension on the air gap magnetic flux density (Bg) in the design of a single-phase radial flux permanent magnet generator (RFPMG). The changes in stator dimension were carried out by using three different wire diameters as stator wire, namely, AWG 14 (d = 1.63 mm), AWG 15 (d = 1.45 mm) and AWG 16 (d = 1.29 mm). The dimension of the width of the stator teeth (Wts) was fixed such that a larger stator wire diameter will require a larger stator outside diameter (Dso). By fixing the dimensions of the rotor, permanent magnet, air gap (lg) and stator inner diameter, the magnitude of the magnetic flux density in the air gap (Bg) can be determined. This flux density was used to calculate the phase back electromotive force (Eph). The terminal phase voltage (V∅) was determined after calculating the stator wire impedance (Z) with a constant current of 3.63 A. The study method was conducted by determining the design parameters, calculating the design variables, designing the generator dimensions using AutoCad and determining the magnetic flux density using FEMM simulation.  The results show that the magnetic flux density in the air gap and the phase back emf Eph slightly decrease with increasing stator dimension because of increasing reluctance. However, the voltage drop is more dominant when the stator coil wire diameter is smaller. Thus, a larger diameter of the stator wire would allow terminal phase voltage (V∅) to become slightly larger. With a stator wire diameter of 1.29, 1.45 and 1.63 mm, the impedance values of the stator wire (Z) were 9.52746, 9.23581 and 9.06421 Ω and the terminal phase voltages (V∅) were 220.73, 221.57 and 222.80 V, respectively. Increasing the power capacity (S) in the RFPMG design by increasing the diameter (d) of the stator wire will cause a significant increase in the percentage of the stator maximum current carrying capacity wire but the decrease in stator wire impedance is not significant. Thus, it will reduce the phase terminal voltage (V∅) from its nominal value.

In an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor, an adhesive such as bond is generally injected into the magnet tolerance to prevent vibration of the permanent magnet within the insertion space. In this case, a disadvantage is that the magnet tolerance does not contribute to the performance. In this paper, ferrofluid is inserted to improve the torque density, utilizing the magnet tolerance. When inserting ferrofluid into the magnet tolerance, it is important to fix the magnet because conventional adhesives are not used, and it is important that the ferrofluid does not act as a leakage path within the insertion space. In this study, a new rotor configuration using a plastic barrier that satisfies these considerations was introduced. The analysis was conducted through finite element analysis (FEA), and this technique was verified by comparing the simulation results and the experimental results through a dynamo test. It was confirmed that the no-load back electromotive force in the final model increased through ferrofluid injection.
