The internalization of family businesses – i.e. of the companies that implement it – can be stimulated by numerous reasons: one of these is linked to the target markets, not in terms of market development, but of resource to be used / exploited. What makes the oil companies distinguishing is that: they follow the territory and the exploitation of the underground resources, wherever they are in the world. In the Italian context, this characteristic of oilfield companies is very noticeable due to the scarcity of underground resources, which characterize our territory. We propose an empirical approach. It has been considered the case of a specific Italian Oil&Gas family firm. The study consists of: a first part, in which an analysis of the main economic and managerial literature, both national and international, was made (on internationalization, SMEs and family businesses, industrial districts, oilfield environment); a second part, in which an empirical analysis was developed: interviews have been conducted with the owners and top management of the company, in order to study and analyze the firm development strategies.

This article sheds light on the valuation of family firms when compared with nonfamily firms as acquisition targets. The authors argue that although the majority of theoretical and empirical research explicitly recognizes the prevalence and superior performance of family firms around the world, acquiring companies tend to regard family firms as unprofessional and inefficient organizations, thus negatively affecting their valuation when compared with nonfamily firm targets. Overall, the authors’ empirical analysis, based on a matched-pairs methodology and use of multiples, shows that acquiring companies favor the stagnation perspective rather than the stewardship perspective and thus pay less (i.e., acquire at a discount) for a family firm target than for a nonfamily firm target.

Although youth are often thought of as targets for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) programmes, they are also active partners in creating a more sustainable world and effective ESD programmes. Today, more than ever, young women and men are change-makers, building new realities for themselves and their communities. All over the world, youth are driving social change and innovation, claiming respect for their fundamental human rights and freedoms, and seeking new opportunities to learn and work together for a better future. The education sector is generally seen as the most appropriate forum for involving children and youth in sustainable development, and initiatives to this end have been adopted in many countries. The present paper puts forth such initiatives, interventions and strategies that can be undertaken to engage youth in education for sustainable development at the global as well as the local level.

The decade of the 2000s was a period of boom and bust when, despite rising prosperity in general, there was increased inequality and heightened economic insecurity for most people in the world. The Survey reports tracked both causes and outcomes, taking a broader view of development that emphasized the importance of economic processes and structural change and recognized the effects of macro imbalances and financial instability, as well as the limits posed by ecological damage and social tensions. Several concerns—and possible solutions—outlined in the Survey reports still have major contemporary relevance, including the importance of countries adopting their own national development strategies and the need for international cooperation.

This case study examines the motivations and barriers to small firm internationalization. The entrepreneur's human and reputational capital, experience and knowledge are leveraged to address barriers. An e-business platform strategy is illustrated. At a secondary level, the case also demonstrates the challenges inherent in revitalizing family businesses over generations of ownership.
