Based on the dynamic simulation model, the dynamic response index of vehicle system under the action of track irregularity is divided into three areas: repair, deterioration and maintenance. The correlation between the track irregularity index and the dynamic response index domain of vehicle system components is calculated and statistically studied. The estimation model of dynamic response index domain of vehicle system and the domain boundaries of different dynamic response indexes are established and obtained Line. According to the principle of single variable method, the excitation source of vehicle track system is divided into track irregularity and other comprehensive factors (such as temperature load, material damage, etc.), and a simple inversion method of track foundation state is proposed based on the estimation model of dynamic response index domain. Its basic principle is: if the statistical characteristics of track irregularity remain unchanged and other influencing factors change, the estimation domain and measurement domain of dynamic response index will produce grade jump, so as to determine whether the basic state of the line is normal. The simulation results show that the accuracy of domain estimation of dynamic response index of vehicle system is more than 80%, and the accuracy of recognition is more than 70% for the damage condition of the line infrastructure, where the fastener is empty.

To investigate the characteristic of coupled vibration of high speed train and bridge, the effect of the railway track irregularity, different train speeds were investigated based on analyzing the coupled vibration of the JR300 high speed train-bridge system The results show that the vertical acceleration of train will be influenced much when the railway track irregularity is considered. The study suggests that the dynamic response of the train and bridge decreases with an increase in the train speed, when the train speed is at a certain zone, and the dynamic response increase rapidly with the increased train speed when the train speed is out of this zone.

Polygonalization of the wheel describes the growth of out-of-round profiles of the wheels of railway vehicle. This problem was identified in the 1980s but its mechanism is still not well understood. The wheel-rail disturbance formed by wheel polygonalization will accelerate the fatigue fracture of the key parts of rail vehicles and seriously threaten the safety of rail vehicle. This fact has led to significant efforts in detecting and diagnosing wheel polygonalization, in particular in setting the criteria for health monitoring. Currently, the time-domain feature parameters extraction method based on data statistics and frequency-domain feature parameters extraction method based on spectrum estimation are widely applied to detect wheel polygonalization. However, the basis of spectral estimation is the Fourier transform, which is not good at dealing with non-linear vibration systems (such as vehicle-track coupled system). Aiming at the wheel polygonalization problem existing in high-speed train, the non-linear extent of vibration response of vehicle system caused by wheel polygonalization is analyzed based on vehicle-track coupled dynamics and adaptive data analysis method. A typical high-speed train model is established according to the vehicle-track coupled dynamics theory. The wheel polygonalization model is introduced and vehicle system vibration response is calculated by numerical integration. The vibration response signal is decomposed by empirical mode decomposition (EMD) to produce the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). By calculating the intra-wave frequency modulation of IMFs, that is, the difference between instantaneous and mean frequencies and amplitudes, the non-linearity of the dynamic response is quantified. Influences of wheel polygonalization on the non-linearity of steady-state and unsteady vibration responses of vehicle system are analyzed in detail. An objective criterion for wheel polygonalization health monitoring based on Degree of Non-linearity is proposed, which provides an effective tool for prognostics and health management of trains.

The fastener system is an essential component of the high-speed ballastless track system. A detailed analysis for the effect of fastener looseness on the vertical dynamic response of the vehicle–track coupling system is conducted from the time domain, frequency domain and time–frequency domain in this paper. A fine fastener system model is employed, which includes two spring rods and one rail pad. The preloaded force is proposed to simulate the defect of the fastener, and a looseness coefficient is defined to represent the loose degree of the fastener. First, three fastener system models are introduced into the model, respectively, and the difference in the vehicle–track dynamic is analyzed and compared. The results show that the proposed model is more consistent with the real situation and more suitable to simulate fastener defects. Then, the detailed analysis of vehicle and track dynamic responses is explored in the case of different degrees of loose fasteners and the case of completely loose fasteners. According to the simulation results, there is little impact on the dynamic response of the vehicle–track system when the looseness coefficient is less than 0.9. When the fasteners are completely loosened, the dynamic response of the wheelset and the rail significantly increases. The vibration responses of rail and wheelset enhance with the increase of the number of the completely loose fastener. The loose fasteners affect the low-frequency part of the wheelset vibration response and the high-frequency part of the rail vibration response. Finally, a time–frequency analysis method is used to analyze the system vibration response under the combined effect of the completely loose fastener and the track irregularity. The track irregularity still dominates the excitation of the system, and the vibration response of the wheelset and the rail is more sensitive to the fastener defect at low speed.

Small high speed passenger crafts (HSC) are commonly known for their poor seakeeping qualities. These crafts are frequently exposed to large slamming impacts and these repetitive shocks may pose danger to passengers’ safety and health. In Malaysia, small high speed passenger crafts having lengths between 7 to 9 meters are mainly used to transport tourists between popular island destinations. Evaluation on impact and vibration for this type of craft was conducted by using accelerometers attached to several locations on craft’s deck. The test was conducted at speeds ranged between 20 to 30 knots and the highest peak accelerations were recorded. The highest acceleration record during the sea trial was recorded at 4.22 g and the average acceleration measure is 2.20 g. Apart from this test, evaluation on effectiveness of the current foam seat typically used in this craft were evaluated using Dynamic Response Index (DRI) and results have shown that the seat is less efficient when impact reaches more than 1g at speeds of more than 20 knots. It is concluded that safety measures such as the use of more efficient suspension seat and limiting the operational speed need to be taken into consideration.

The dynamic response of the turbine blade materials is indispensable for analysis of erosions of turbine blades as a result of impulsive loading associated with gas flow. This paper is concerned with the dynamic material properties of the Inconel 718 alloy which is widely used in the high speed turbine blade. The dynamic response at the corresponding level of the strain rate should be acquired with an adequate experimental technique and apparatus due to the inertia effect and the stress wave propagation. In this paper, the dynamic response of the Inconel 718 at the intermediate strain rate ranged from 1/s to 400/s is obtained from the high speed tensile test and that at the high strain rate above 1000/s is obtained from the split Hopkinson pressure bar test. The effects of the strain rate on the dynamic flow stress, the strain rate sensitivity and the failure elongation are evaluated with the experimental results. Experimental results from both the quasi-static and the high strain rate up to 3000/s are interpolated in order to construct the constitutive relation that should be applied to simulate the dynamic behavior of the turbine blade made of the Inconel 718.

In order to study the influence of an integration time step on dynamic calculation of a vehicle-track-bridge under high-speed railway, a vehicle-track-bridge (VTB) coupled model is established. The influence of the integration time step on calculation accuracy and calculation stability under different speeds or different track regularity states is studied. The influence of the track irregularity on the integration time step is further analyzed by using the spectral characteristic of sensitive wavelength. According to the results, the disparity among the effect of the integration time step on the calculation accuracy of the VTB coupled model at different speeds is very small. Higher speed requires a smaller integration time step to keep the calculation results stable. The effect of the integration time step on the calculation stability of the maximum vertical acceleration of each component at different speeds is somewhat different, and the mechanism of the effect of the integration time step on the calculation stability of the vehicle-track-bridge coupled system is that corresponding displacement at the integration time step is different. The calculation deviation of the maximum vertical acceleration of the car body, wheel-sets and bridge under the track short wave irregularity state are greatly increased compared with that without track irregularity. The maximum vertical acceleration of wheel-sets, rails, track slabs and the bridge under the track short wave irregularity state all show a significant declining trend. The larger the vibration frequency is, the smaller the range of integration time step is for dynamic calculation.

In order to find out the influence of subgrade frost heave on the deformation of track structure and track irregularity of high-speed railways, a nonlinear damage finite element model for China Railway Track System III (CRTSIII) slab track subgrade was established based on the constitutive theory of concrete plastic damage. The analysis of track structure deformation under different subgrade frost heave conditions was focused on, and amplitude the limit of subgrade frost heave was put forward according to the characteristics of interlayer seams. This work is expected to provide guidance for design and construction. Subgrade frost heave was found to cause cosine-type irregularities of rails and the interlayer seams in the track structure, and the displacement in lower foundation mapping to rail surfaces increased. When frost heave occured in the middle part of the track slab, it caused the greatest amount of track irregularity, resulting in a longer and higher seam. Along with the increase in frost heave amplitude, the length of the seam increased linearly whilst its height increased nonlinearly. When the frost heave amplitude reached 35 mm, cracks appeared along the transverse direction of the upper concrete surface on the base plate due to plastic damage; consequently, the base plate started to bend, which reduced interlayer seams. Based on the critical value of track structures’ interlayer seams under different frost heave conditions, four control limits of subgrade frost heave at different levels of frost heave amplitude/wavelength were obtained.

Abstract The main purpose of this study is to evaluate factors affecting passenger rail demand, with special attention to the effects of structural reform/regulation and competition. In order to do this, we use data obtained from 30 OECD countries for the 24 years from 1990 to 2013. As structural reform/regulation and competition variables, we take the OECD’s five kinds of regulatory indices: (i) overall, (ii) entry, (iii) public ownership, (iv) vertical integration, and (v) market structure; and for competition variables, we take (vi) rail passenger-freight ratio, (vii) rail share, and (viii) high-speed train ratio. As estimation methods, both the fixed effect model and the Hausman-Taylor estimation model are used. The major findings are as follows. First, competition as competitiveness (i.e. the share of rail, passenger over freight ratio) increases passenger demand. And the existence of high-speed trains increases passenger demand. Second, overall, entry regulation, and market structure have no significant effect on demand. Third, public ownership affects passenger demand positively. Last, vertical integration reduces passenger demand.
