We present the results of the hydrochemical analysis in Lake Itkul, which is the natural monument in the Chelyabinsk Region and an important recreational facility for the population of the Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk Regions. The water of Lake Itkul is fresh in terms of chemical composition, has low-alkaline medium reaction, and is very soft and saturated with oxygen. The water content in biogenic substances such as ions of nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate is low. Description and analysis of ecological groups of phytoplankton species of Lake Itkul are provided. The phytoplankton of Lake Itkul comprises eurybiontic and neutral species having wide geographical distributions. Analysis of ion contents of the zinc, copper, manganese, and nickel in the water and organs and tissues of the common roach indicated high residual concentrations of nickel in fish skin and bones, above allowable values. The content of iron, manganese, and other secondary elements in water was significantly lower than their maximum allowable concentrations, reflecting the absence of industrial water discharge within the lake water intake.

The article is devoted to the assessment of the ecological sustainability of Lake Gorkoye in the Chelyabinsk region (Russia). The condition of aquatic ecosystems in industrial regions is mainly determined by the impact on them of anthropogenic factors. The ecological assessment of Lake Gorkoye was carried out according to organoleptic and hydrochemical indicators. The conducted physical and chemical analysis of water in Lake Gorkoye allows stating that water pH characterizes water as slightly alkaline and alkaline, water saturation with dissolved oxygen is within the norm for water fishery use. The excess of the norms of ammonium cations and nitrite ions, with normal levels of phosphate and nitrate ions, suggests that water in Lake Gorkoye belongs to the dirty water class, which is confirmed by the calculated ratio of nitrite-ions and ammonium cations (1.00:9.69). The revealed COD/BOD ratio is equal to 2.09, indicating that the biological purification process cannot fully occur. Lake Gorkoye is in an unstable state directly caused by business activities in the surrounding area.

Fluvial lakes affect on phosphorus and potassium concentrations in the Samica Stęszewska River The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of shallow lakes on reactive, total phosphorus and potassium concentrations in the river water and analyse the effect of changes in water retention in lake on nutrient concentrations in river waters. The study was carried out in the Samica Steszewska River. This is lowland river, which flows through two polymictic lakes. The study site is located in the Wielkopolska Lowland, Central-west Poland. Water samples were collected at depths of 0.5 m below the water surface. Reactive, total phosphorus and potassium were analysed monthly by standard methods. The study was carried out from January to December 1999-2002 (period with high water retention), 2005-2008 (period with low water retention), at four control points. Sites were located at the inflow and outflow of the Samica Stęszewska River into and out of Niepruszewskie and Tomickie Lakes. From 1974 to 2002, Lake Niepruszewskie was regulated at its outlet by a weir. In 2002, the water level was reduced. Changes of water retention in Niepruszewskie Lake influenced water discharge of the Samica Stęszewska River. The results indicate that changes in water retention have significantly influenced water quality in the river, particularly total and reactive phosphorus concentrations; however, this influence was not observed in respect to potassium concentrations. Nutrient concentrations in river strongly depend on water quality of the lake ecosystem and their buffering capacity. Additionally, by improving water quality, increased oxygen concentrations, and decreasing dissolved nutrient concentrations, as well as increased amplitude of water level fluctuations in lakes may increase P-fixation rates in outlet streams.

The full operation of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has altered the downstream natural flow regime. Flow regime changes have resulted in profound influences on the utility of water resources and hence a large area with a riparian ecosystem including China's two largest freshwater lakes in the Middle Yangtze. Because of complicated flow regimes in this large-scale river–lake system, the TGD's impacts on flow regimes are highly heterogeneous and require to be carefully addressed. To better understand them, we estimated water level and discharge changes solely induced by the TGD from 2006 to 2011 using a hydrodynamic model that facilitates the separation of the TGD's contribution to flow regimes. Results indicated that water regulation of the TGD caused profound impacts on the flow regimes of the Middle Yangtze. In the impoundment period from mid-September to October, rapid and significant decline of the water discharge downstream the TGD produced a prolonged dry season that occurred around 10 days earlier than before. Our analysis elucidated a pattern of recent changes in the flow regimes caused by the TGD. The findings are useful for addressing the TGD-induced environmental issues, optimizing the TGD's operation, and generating adaptive management strategy for the complex river–lake ecosystem.

In general, all BCC transition metals have been observed to twin under appropriate conditions. At the present time various experimental reports of solid solution effects on BCC metals have been made. Indications are that solid solution effects are important in the formation of twins. The formation of twins in metals and alloys may be explained in terms of dislocation mechanisms. It has been suggested that twins are nucleated by the achievement of local stress-concentration of the order of 15 to 45 times the applied stress. Prietner and Leslie have found that twins in BCC metals are nucleated at intersections of (110) and (112) or (112) and (112) type of planes. In this paper, observations are reported of a transmission microscope study of the iron manganese series under conditions in which twins both were and were not formed. High strain rates produced by shock loading provided the appropriate deformation conditions. The workhardening mechanisms of one alloy (Fe - 7.37 wt% Mn) were studied in detail.

The reliability of water flow measurement in irrigational canals depends on the measurement method and design features of the flow-measuring structure and the upstream flow velocity profile. The flow velocity profile is a function of the channel geometry and wall roughness. The article presents the study results of the influence of the upstream flow velocity profile on the discharge measurement accuracy. For this, the physical and numerical modeling of two structures was carried out: a critical depth flume and a hydrometric overfall in a rectangular channel. According to the data of numerical simulation of the critical depth flume with a uniform and parabolic (1/7) velocity profile in the upstream channel, the values of water discharge differ very little from the experimental values in the laboratory model with a similar geometry (δ < 2 %). In contrast to the critical depth flume, a change in the velocity profile only due to an increase in the height of the bottom roughness by 3 mm causes a decrease of the overfall discharge coefficient by 4…5 %. According to the results of the numerical and physical modeling, it was found that an increase of backwater by hydrometric structure reduces the influence of the upstream flow velocity profile and increases the reliability of water flow measurements.
