This chapter details events in Roland Penrose's life from 1945 to 1947. Lee and Roland flew to New York City on 19 May 1946. Roland was elated to have the opportunity to rekindle his relationship with the Museum of Modern Art's (MOMA) director Alfred H. Barr, Jr., who likely warned him about the dangers he would face if he backed any kind of proposal to open a museum of modern art in London. Roland was taken with MOMA's collection: ‘Realizing that it was on a far greater scale that anything that could be dreamt of in London, consistently indifferent to all matters concerning the visual arts and still enfeebled by the war, this achievement nevertheless roused in me a longing to attempt some similar kind of folly at home’. Barr would also have expressed his gratitude to Roland for allowing his Picassos to be sent to MOMA during the war.

This chapter describes the early years of Hodges’s association with Duke Ellington beginning in 1928, when the band strove to play “jungle music” that would titillate white patrons of the segregated Cotton Club, where the group served as house band. Hodges’s seductive approach added a new dimension to the growls, hot rhythms, and strange harmonies that characterized Ellington’s early efforts; the warmth of his tone, his flatted “blue” notes and his plaintive phrasing brought an element of New Orleans to Ellington’s New York band that it had lacked after the brief tenure of Sidney Bechet ended. Noteworthy performances of the 1930s are described, including Hodges’s participation in Benny Goodman’s 1938 mixed-race concert at Carnegie Hall. Goodman and Ellington were rivals, and Ellington was upset that Goodman got to Carnegie Hall before he did and that Hodges showed an independent streak by participating.

Readers seeking information about prominent urban Chinese artists, writers, composers, film-makers, public intellectuals, and socio-cultural trends in the reform period will find much of use in the Encyclopedia of Contemporary Chinese Culture, a collaborative transnational effort that is unfortunately marred by unevenness and sloppy editing. Browsers will also find lively and opinionated essays about cars and taxis, falun gong, democracy, dating and sex shops.Editor Edward L. Davis gave free reign to the contributors of the almost 1,200 entries in this fifth volume, encouraging them to pass judgment and editorialize. He also wisely involved mainland scholars like Yue Daiyun and Dai Jinhua when drawing up the lists of entries, and called upon Francesca Dal Lago to oversee the book's excellent sections on visual arts. While the Encyclopedia's list of contributors includes prominent, well-established scholars (Timothy Cheek on intellectuals and academics, Frank Dikötter on prisons, and Geremie Barme´ on seemingly anything he wanted to write about), its large number of young, Chineseborn scholars based in North America and Europe reflects an important shift in the field of Chinese studies.Entries, varying in length from a single paragraph to ten pages (see Lionel Jensen's piece on falun gong, for example), are organized alphabetically, include cross-references, and are often followed by suggestions for further reading. A helpful thematic classified entry list precedes the entries themselves. Unfortunately, problematic organization undermines the book's usefulness for both literate Chinese readers and those with no knowledge of the language. Pinyin renderings of names and phrases are not accompanied by Chinese characters, hampering the task of scholars hoping to conduct further primary-source research on a particular person.

This chapter focuses on Fannie Barrier Williams' early life. Fannie Barrier was born on February 12, 1855, to mixed-race parents, in Brockport, an overwhelmingly white community in New York. Brockport was north of slavery, and according to census records, no resident of the town had ever owned enslaved people. The village was a secure and supportive place for Barrier, with no racially divided public spaces. This chapter first provides a background on Brockport and Fannie's parents, Harriet Prince Barrier and Anthony J. Barrier, as well as her early education, including her enrollment at the Brockport Collegiate Institute. It considers how the school provided Fannie with the necessary skills to pursue the personal, public, and professional life that was not available to her mother's generation. It also examines how the northern location of Brockport and the convergence of several social, political, and economic factors sheltered Fannie and her siblings and greatly restricted the negative impact of racism and discrimination on their lives.
