This article indicates the specific manner in which early modern literature is exploited in contemporary media. It focuses on the interaction involving the trans-position of philosophical texts to the domain of laughter embedded in the everyday life of the modern recipient. Selected passages of John Donne’s (1572-1631) prose and poetry serve to illustrate how an old literary work encourages new creativity, how it transcends the boundaries set by a given epoch, culture and form, to undergo a specific thematic and structural transformation. What seems particularly interesting in this process is the conversion of philosophical sadness into a useful joke incorporated in, inter alia, the transition from meditation to motivation, from inspiration to action. In other words, this article examines laughter provoked at the interface between a profound philo-sophical message and popular entertainment which combines images and words and activates the intellect as well as the senses and emotions. Such foundations give rise to a transmedia message being socially functional – not only as comic relief, but also as a didactic tool for shaping attitudes.

The functional role of books (scientific, artistic, philosophical, religious and moralistic) in the public prac­tice of the German Enlightenment is comparable to the significance of such major national concepts as the Lutheran faith and a special German character. The idea of aesthetic education in contemporary historical circumstances and socio-political circumstances actually became the ideology of national self-determina­tion. The book, its semantic «images» as literary reading images enshrined in famous works of German clas­sics, helps better revealing the spiritual content of the era and the human inner world (in typical «hero of time»). Educational book (serious and entertaining) defines the vector of social development in Germany.  German book in its «materiality» belongs to the everyday life culture, reflects the level of development of the book business in Germany and the specificity of the «culture of consumption». Everyday life culture is a holistic «life world» shared «values» and «meanings» perceived as a world attitudes and behavioral habits and regarded as a natural space of human activity. Such an approach makes it possible to study the typical, recurring forms of «cultural practices», before remaining on the periphery of classical humanities. «Reading» could be attributed to this range of socio-cultural practices. Philosophical basis of the study is the following: everything that a thing opens our perception is simply «a scheme of sensation» changing in accordance with «angles», in which we perceive them; what the thing is in its materiality can be revealed only through our final experiences. A material thing and its «causality» base in sensory perception of a subject. This series of «material things» should include «the book in general» and specifically German book as an attribute of everyday life culture of the Enlightenment. The author investigates representations of meanings of «books» (ash an abstracted subject of study) realized in the «chronotope» of a literary work. The structure of «reading image» and «book image» identified during the texts analysis of famous masterpieces of German classics have a moral connotation.

This paper as a case study is an attempt at revealing some of the previously ignored, but relevant contexts related to the phenomena of reading, listening to, or assimilating early modern sermons. Due to the survival of numerous ego-documents accounting for the everyday life of an early modern individual, Mihály Cserei (1667–1756), my interperation provides a microhistorical reconstruction of those moments when Cserei was either listening to or reading Catholic and Protestant sermons. As he put down his reflections recording the hermeneutical experience of listening to or reading early modern Hungarian or Latin sermons, there is a possibility to decipher the cultural, confessional, and mental intentions, biases or prejudices shaping the act of understanding. Thus, Cserei became a modelreader immortalized in the microhistorical contexts of his life, revealing some of the unknown historical anthropological features of reading and understanding in the confessionally divided culture of the early modern era.

The literary work of Jean Pélégri and Jean-Pierre Koffel presents two different ways of rendering the richness of linguistic mixing in colonial and post-colonial Maghreb. For both of them, it is a question of making the various communities living in the area talk by building a bridge that seems to have its origin in the Mediterranean poetics of the École d’Alger, but which tends to integrate into a profoundly Maghreb literature. Both use a French language marked by the different languages that characterise the Maghreb. However, in Pélégri this attempt originates from the need to respond to the drama of the war and the separation from Algerian territory ; in Koffel it starts from the need to respect the codes of the police, making the everyday life and the familiarity of the Moroccan and French speakers of Morocco, but opening up to a linguistic analysis that crosses the lines of the text, almost wanting to mix didactic motivations and meta-textual play.

There were two types of speech style which could be divided into formal and informal type. The informal one was well-known by the name of slang. Slang was non-standard language used in the everyday life created by a certain community and usually used by the teenagers in modern era. Slang was not only found in the daily conversation, but also could be found in literary works like song. Song was a literary work which could reflect the reality and express someone’s feelings. This study analyzes the slangs found in five lyrics of Eminem’s song by using descriptive qualitative method. Besides, this study focused on the word formation of the slangs itself. There are 60 data which has been collected from the lyrics.  From the analysis conducted, the types of word formation are found in the slangs used in the lyrics, such as blending, clipping, coinage, acronym and onomatopoeia. Mostly, the American slangs in the Eminem’s song lyrics are created by the process of blending and clipping.

To identify changes in the everyday life of hepatitis subjects, we conducted a descriptive, exploratory, and qualitative analysis. Data from 12 hepatitis B and/or C patients were collected in October 2011 through a semi-structured interview and subjected to thematic content review. Most subjects have been diagnosed with hepatitis B. The diagnosis period ranged from less than 6 months to 12 years, and the diagnosis was made predominantly through the donation of blood. Interferon was used in only two patients. The findings were divided into two groups that define the interviewees' feelings and responses, as well as some lifestyle changes. It was concluded that the magnitude of phenomena about the disease process and life with hepatitis must be understood to health professionals. Manhood was a complex social construct in early modern England. Males could not simply mature or grow from boys to men. Instead, they had to assert or prove they were men in multiple ways, such as growing a beard, behaving courageously in battle, exercising self-control in walking, talking, weeping, eating, and drinking, pursuing manly interests, exhibiting manly behaviors, avoiding interests or behaviors typically ascribed to women, marrying a woman and providing for her physical, sexual, and spiritual needs, and living and dying as a faithful Christian. Once a male became a “man” in the eyes of others, his efforts shifted from “making” himself manly to maintaining or defending his reputation as a “true man.” All men could undermine their manhood through their own actions or inactions, but the married man could also lose his reputation through his wife's infidelity. Numerous literary husbands in early modern literature live anxiously with the knowledge they might suffer a cuckold's humiliation and shame. Matthew Shore, who “treasures” his wife to a fault in Thomas Heywood's two-part play Edward IV, is an exceptional example of such a husband. This critical reading of Edward IV explores the complexity of manhood in Heywood's day by showing various males trying to assert or defend their manhood; explaining why husbands had reasons to fear cuckoldry; analyzing how Jane Shore's infidelity affects her husband; following Matthew Shore's journey from trusting husband to distrusting, bitter cuckold, to forgiving husband; and examining his seemingly inexplicable death at the end of the play.

From a remarkably innovative point of departure, Ben Highmore (University of Sussex) suggests that modernist literature and art were not the only cultural practices concerned with reclaiming the everyday and imbuing it with significance. At the same time, Roger Caillois was studying the spontaneous interactions involved in games such as hopscotch, while other small scale institutions such as the Pioneer Health Centre in Peckham, London attempted to reconcile systematic study and knowledge with the non-systematic exchanges in games and play. Highmore suggests that such experiments comprise a less-often recognised ‘modernist heritage’, and argues powerfully for their importance within early-twentieth century anthropology and the newly-emerged field of cultural studies.
