In this article, from the linguistic and ethnoculturological points of view are analyzed Ukrainian texts of epigraphs in «The Fair at Sorochyntsi» by N.V. Gogol, included in the Russian-language prose, which is an integral part of Russian literature, culture and history. Purpose of the article: This work is an attempt to interpret Ukrainian conceptual symbols, images and metaphors used by the author to create a special atmosphere of Ukrainian identity. Methods: In the study the methods of contextual-pragmatic and lexical analysis are used. In particular, the subject of our study is the Ukrainian texts of the epigraphs to each of the chapters of the above-mentioned literary work, which, due to insufficient knowledge of the Ukrainian cultural context, are far from always deeply understood by the Russian reader and do not always evoke the same associative series as the bearer of the Ukrainian worldview, although close to the Russian one, but still significantly different from it. Results: As a result of the study it is possible to state, that here we deal with the problem of the difference in the cultural perception and understanding the original significance, laid down by N. Gogol in the text and the meaning of his work. It is concluded that the analyzed text of Gogol demonstrates not only the cultural similarity of the two peoples, but, which seems to be more important, the differences in the worldview and way of life of Ukrainians and Russians. The epigraphs in Ukrainian cited by the writer at the beginning of the each chapter serve as a kind of «textual marker», which helps the reader to delve deeper into the content of the text and try to understand not only explicit meaning but also implicit senses implied by the author in its structure.

The article explains the purpose of creating an exemplary program of the subject “Native literature (Russian)” connected with the execution of the Federal Law on Education, supporting the main aim of the core course in literature – the development of a competent reader, as well as reinforcing the cultivating function of school literary education and preserving the Russian language, literature and culture against the background of Russian multi-ethnic and multicultural society. The following objectives of the new subject acquire particular significance: perceiving literature as one of the main cultural values of the nation (which reflects its national character, history, worldview); ensuring cultural self-identification, becoming aware of the communicative and aesthetic power of the mother tongue based on the study of outstanding literary creations of the Russian culture, the culture of one’s ethnic group, world culture. The methodological background to the exemplary program rests upon the idea of an ideological nature and educational potential of the Russian literature. In creating the didactic model in question, the authors of the program used theoretical and practical research methods, as well as the cognitive and system- and activity-based approaches. The results of the research were as follows: validation of the legal and regulatory framework of the new subject and the primary goals of its study, elaboration of the principles – which are based on the system of value codes shared by the whole nation’s cultural tradition – according to which the contents and structure of the course are selected. The article demonstrates what distinguishes “Native literature (Russian)” from the school subject “Literature”, how each of the three content branches of the program contributes to the development of subject knowledge and skills from grade to grade, why this or that recommended literary work is included in the topic-issue units, and which forms of the final subject assessment are most preferable. The exemplary program of the subject contributes to solving the issue of national and cultural identity and understanding what role the Russian literature plays in becoming aware of the national traits of the Russian culture. It also fosters the comprehension of cultural concepts that are crucial for the Russian national consciousness and the development of one’s ability to transform his/her reflections on works of native literature into personal convictions and positive values.

The subject of this research is the dynamics of using thematic group “Religion” in the literary works of K. G. Paustovsky. The eight-volume collection of the writer's works served as the material for this research. The goal is to characterize the specificity of functionality of the lexicon with the semantics of religion in the works of K. G. Paustovsky. The article employs the following methods: descriptive-analytical, system description, inductive-hypothetical, contextual analysis and qualitative analysis; observation and interpretation techniques. The practical value of this research lies in the possibility to use its results in the university disciplines, such as “Philological Analysis of the Text”, “Modern Russian Language”, “History of the Russian Literary “Language”, and “Stylistics”. The scientific novelty consists in studying the lexicon of the thematic group “Religion” in the works of K. G. Paustovsky in the dynamic aspect (the author offers the methodology of three-stage analysis). It is determined that the linguistic unit pertaining to “Religion” in the works of K. G. Paustovsky indicate a significant dynamics of their application relate to a particular period of his creative path, functions of a literary work,  levels of artistic usage, division of nominations into subgroups and micro-groups. All of the aforementioned characteristics are interrelated. The presented material will be valuable in the Paustovsky’s studies, theory of poetic speech, functional-semantic research.

“The belly is the belle of his stories, the nose is their beau.“Vladimir Nabokov, Nikolai Gogol (1944)The subject of gastronomy—as it touches upon the significance of what, how, and why man eats—has begun to receive increasing attention in recent years, during which time quite a number of books on the history of food and drink have appeared. Scholars, moreover, have demonstrated a heightened interest lately in the anthropological aspects of this topic. Since eating is a human activity that by its very nature encompasses a social, a psychological, as well as a biological dimension, the depiction of fictional meals in literature allows this ritualistic event to be transformed into a narrative sign with vast semiotic possibilities—not only within the world of the literary work itself (intratextually) but also within a broader cultural context (extratextually).


Of particular relevance to modern literary studies is the study of the media of communicative poetics, which largely offset the traditional modernist paradigms of literary work. A related issue is the study of supertext unity, composed of author's projects with a complex narrative hierarchy and genre-stylistic hybridity. The typology of literary and medial projects embodying the phenomenon of new historicism in modern Russian literature (the works of V. Sharov, V. Sorokin, E. Vodolazkin, M. Shishkin, etc.) is highlighted. An undoubtedly significant place in this context belongs to the meta-historical project of Boris Akunin. The purpose of this article is to study the literary project of Boris Akunin as a medial system that coordinates the historiosophical motivations of the author with metatextual representations of genre-narrative models characteristic of modern literature. As a methodological key, an analysis of the productive interaction of scientistic and fictitious meanings of the concepts of “history” and “event”, as well as the corresponding cognitive traditions and practices of their understanding, is used. The study showed how “large” historical narratives are demonologized, undergoing the corrective influence of fictional ontological and anthropological models. This makes it relevant to appeal to the genres of jokes and short stories, detective and adventurous versions of a historical novel. The subject-narrative system activates polyphonic means – the interference of speech and the points of view of narrators and actors. Artistic time and space create many variations of the intersection of chronotopes, plot correlations, and motivational roll calls. Thus, the authority of the author is decentralized - he acts as a moderator of a multidiscursive set of telling versions – ‘stories’ and ‘events’. A system of authority masks is created, each of which embodies a new version of the Other's figure as a carrier of a different creative consciousness, an alternative ideology and a language for describing the world.

Interlok is a literary work with a specific theme that resulted from a contest and it proposes the subject of national integration at its core to fulfil the aspirations and the development of the then newly independent Malaysia. The historical framework is used as an instrument for discourse purposes in addressing socio-cultural and humanitarian issues related to the solidarity and development of the Malaysian nation. Therefore, this novel may be categorised as a socio-historical novel and not purely a historical novel. Interlok provides the opportunity to the reader to explore the author’s profound meaning in introducing the subject of solidarity as the foundation of the development of the Malaysian nation. The difference in values among the races has to be narrowed whereas the quality or the advantage possessed by each of the respective races has to be assembled to obtain maximum benefit. From spells over the cradle to linguistic magic of a networked mother — continuity and change of the nature of mothers’ language magic The essay draws attention to the fact that, since the old days, in the case of frustration connected with the child mothers have reached out for words, they have used words to affect both internal, psychic reality and the external one. Magical acts by means of language are based on the world image shared by the sender and the recipient. Polish folk culture positively valued phenomena referring to Polish Catholic symbols, therefore these symbols constitute protective and benevolent powers evoked in folk lullabies. The author suggests looking at contemporary linguistic activities performed by mothers frustrated with staying with the child, which activities are presented in the analysed website magazine Bachor as activities which also make use of the language magic. According to the author, the difference lies in changing the cultural context of linguistic behaviour and associating them in particular with the defining technology. In contemporary mediatised society the power of “obligatory existence”, which was characteristic of magical speech activities, supports and intensifies the equation of media by recipients. Therefore, the author sees Bachor as the act of blocking the language of success which makes room only for parents who are “effective” and affirm positive feelings by introducing into reality — by means of words, words in media — incapable, frustrated parents who are full of negative feelings. The subject is discussed in adescriptive and not in an evaluative way.

This paper sets forth two programmatic texts of the scholarly journal for Philosophy and Religious Studies Obnovljeni Život, written with a half-century interval between each text (1919-1971). Firstly, an insight is given into their commonalities on the level of perspective, structure and content, after which their differences are established, particularly on the intellectual and cultural levels. Following the insights into the programmatic texts as well as the programmatic goals derived from them - which cast a special light on research and provide the guiding principles for the shaping of all articles in the journal, particularly the scholarly and expert articles - an understanding is given of the original contexts within which they appear and implement their programmatic activity. The original contexts link both the programmatic texts and the goals derived from them on the religious and moral levels. However, on the intellectual and cultural levels they establish the difference between the afore-mentioned texts and goals. The final section leads us to conclude that there exists today in the journal Obnovljeni Život a new intellectual and cultural context. Unlike the first two which have already been identified by their modernist (1919) and anthropological points of view (1971), this new original context still needs to be more clearly and more distinctly identified on the intellectual and cultural levels.

This article investigates how the traditional attire and religious iconography of Cristóbal Balenciaga's (1895–1972) country of origin inspired his designs. The arguments presented here build on what has already been established on the subject, provide new data regarding the cultural context that informed the couturier's creative process (with which the Anglo-Saxon world is less familiar) and conclude by investigating the reasons and timing of his exploration of these fields. They suggest why this Spanish influence is present in his innovations in the 1950s and 1960s and go beyond clichéd interpretations of the ruffles of flamenco dress and bullfighters’ jackets. The findings derive from research for the author's doctoral thesis and her curatorial contribution to the exhibition Coal and Velvet. Balenciaga and Ortiz Echagüe. Covid-19 is an unprecedented crisis that has affected almost all industry players including education. It has transformed our way of life and introduced a new normal to how things are done. As an effort to contain the outbreak of pandemic Covid-19, universities have shifted to online learning. In line with this, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) has decided to execute open and distance learning (ODL) for the current semester until 31 December 2020. ODL introduces a different learning environment as compared to the traditional classroom that requires students to be self-reliant in learning new things. Hence, the purpose of the study is to explore students’ experiences in the process of knowledge transfer through ODL specifically for accounting subjects. A questionnaire was distributed to students who were taking the subject of Introduction to Financial Accounting and Introduction to Cost Accounting in UiTM Pahang Kampus Raub and a total of 206 responses were received. The study found over half of the students enjoy learning through ODL but only one-third were looking forward to having ODL for the next semester. Poor internet connection is the main reason found in the study that makes ODL not preferred by the students. At the same time, few features were highlighted by the students about ODL such as the advantage of pre-recorded video to catch up the new material and flexibility for them to learn at their own pace.

AbstrakFolklor yang menghasilkan tradisi lisan merupakan perwujudan budaya yang lahirdari pengalaman kelompok masyarakat. Salah satu bentuk tradisi lisan adalah ungkapan yangmengandung unsur budaya lokal dalam konstruksinya yang tidak dimiliki budaya lainnya.Ungkapan idiomatis memberikan warna pada bahasa melalui penggambaran mental. Dalambahasa Perancis, ungkapan dapat berupa locution dan expression. Perbedaan motif acuansuatu ungkapan dapat terlihat dari pengaruh budaya masyarakat pengguna bahasa. Sebuahleksem tidak selalu didefinisikan melalui unsur minimal, tidak juga melalui kata-kata,baik kata dasar atau kata kompleks, namun dapat melalui kata-kata beku yang maknanyatetap. Hubungan analogis dari makna tambahan yang ada pada suatu leksem muncul dariidentifikasi semem yang sama. Semem tersebut mengarah pada term yang diasosiasikan danyang diperkaya melalui konteks (dalam ungkapan berhubungan dengan konteks budaya).Kata kunci: folklor, ungkapan, struktur, makna idiomatis, kebudayaanAbstractFolklore which produces the oral tradition is a cultural manifestation born out theexperience of community groups. One form of the oral tradition is a phrase that containsthe elements of local culture in its construction that is not owned the other culture. Theidiomatic phrase gives the color to the language through the mental representation. InFrench, the expression can consist of locution and expression. The difference motivesreference of an expression can be seen from the influence of the cultural community thelanguage users. A lexeme is not always defined through a minimal element, nor throughwords, either basic or complex words, but can be through the frost words whose meaningsare fixed. The analogical connection of the additional meanings is on a lexeme arises fromthe identification of the same meaning.
