A stated-preference experiment was performed in Calgary to examine the nature of various influences on the decision to carpool to work in the central business district. A total of 678 complete interviews were conducted. In each interview, the respondent was presented with five successive pairs of possible automobile use alternatives and asked to indicate which alternative was preferred in each case. This forced the respondent to trade off among conditions regarding specific attributes. Several socioeconomic characteristics of the respondent and attributes of the respondent's actual trip to work were also recorded, and the contents of the hypothetical alternatives presented were adjusted accordingly. The observations thus obtained were used to estimate the parameter values for different utility functions in logit models representing this choice of behavior. The results indicate, among other things, that the extra time spent in the automobile serving other carpool participants is valued at a premium rate of about $4.00 (Canadian) per hour (or about 45 percent) more than the automobile ride time for the direct trip; the availability of a guaranteed ride home has a value roughly equivalent to the basic transit fare in Calgary; and each additional household member in a carpool adds further benefit in a reasonably linear manner but does not alter the effect of parking costs for the respondent, whereas each additional non-household member does not add further benefit but does tend to reduce in a nonlinear manner the effect of parking costs for the respondent.

ABSTRACTThe growing population and the shifting of population movement from the suburbs to the city center will make the demand for rail transportation services to the city center increase. To deal with this problem, it is necessary to study the analysis related to potential demand, the need for the number of facilities and new operating patterns for the extension of railroad relations. The results of the research showed that the potential demand was obtained from the calculation of actual and potential demand, where the actual demand was obtained by carrying out a survey on train from 644 respondents, 85.5% agreed with the extension of the Lembah Anai Railway relation and as many as 88% were willing to choose the train mode. In the potential demand analysis, a stated preference survey was carried out in Pauh District, from 2636 respondents, 86.7% were willing to switch from private vehicles and public transportation to the railroad mode. Based on the analysis of the calculation of facility requirements according to the demand, 1 trainset is ready for operation to accommodate the community to carry out daily mobilization to the center of the Central Business District (CBD) in Padang City. Keywords: Demand, pattern of rail operations, Railway Travel Graph (RTG) ABSTRAK Berkembangnya jumlah penduduk dan semakin bergesernya pergerakan penduduk dari pinggiran kota menuju pusat kota akan membuat semakin meningkatnya jumlah permintaan akan jasa angkutan kereta api sampai menuju pusat kota.

A stated-preference experiment was performed in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to examine the nature of various influences on location decisions by various categories of small independent retail firms. A total of 287 completed observations were obtained. In each observation the respondent shop owner or manager was presented with a set of possible shop locations and asked to indicate the order of preference for those locations. These observations were used to estimate the parameter values for a range of alternative utility functions in logit models representing this choice behavior. The results indicate that all the included attributes have significant effects except for the driving time to the nearest electrical substation, which was included as an irrelevant variable to see if the method would indicate it was irrelevant. The results also indicate that the addition of one more competitor nearby is as onerous as an increase in rent of C$127 per month; a switch from a separate location on a minor road to a separate location on a major road is as desirable as a decrease in rent of C$388 per month; a switch from a separate location on a minor road to a mall is as desirable as a decrease in rent of C$665 per month; and an increase in parking charge of C$1 per hour for customers is as onerous as an increase in rent of almost C$200 per month. Some results are novel and others are broadly consistent with findings in other research, which is seen to add credence to the approach used.

This research quantifies the relative importance of proximity to extended family networks in the stated residential location choices of Bogotá‘s low-to-middle-income residents by applying a conditional logistic regression model and using data from an original choice experiment. I find that the surveyed individuals prefer living near their extended family and, on average, prioritise it more than accessibility to the central business district. Those who have relied on help from extended family members in a personal or economic crisis situation have a stronger preference for living near extended family compared with those who have not, as do those who are able to rely on extended family ties for childcare assistance.

ABSTRACTThis paper describes how the results of vapor hydration tests (VHTs) are used to model the corrosion of waste glasses exposed to humid air in the glass degradation model for total system performance assessment (TSPA) calculations for the proposed Yucca Mountain disposal system. Corrosion rates measured in VHTs conducted at 125, 150, 175, and 200°C are compared with the rate equation for aqueous dissolution to determine parameter values that are applicable to glass degradation in humid air. These will be used to determine the minimum for the range and distribution of parameter values in calculations for the Yucca Mountain disposal system license application (TSPA-LA). The rate equation for glass dissolution is rate = kE • 10 η • pH • exp(–Ea/RT). Uncertainties in the calculated rate due to the range of waste glass compositions and water exposure conditions are taken into account by using a range of values for the rate coefficient kE. The parameter values for the pH dependence (η) and temperature dependence (Ea) and the upper limit for kE are being determined with other tests. Using the values of η and Ea from the site recommendation model, the VHT results described in this paper provide a value of log kE = 5.1 as the minimum value for the rate expression. This value will change slightly if different pH-and temperature-dependencies are used for the TSPA-LA model.
