Recycled poly (ethylene terephthalate) or R-PET is conventionally melt blended with polycarbonate with the presence of chain extender in order to produce polymer blend that provides good mechanical properties and cost effectiveness. This research was carried out to improve properties of such a blend by compounding them with silane treated hollow glass microspheres (HGMs), which mixing procedure was emphasized how it could affect mechanical properties. R-PET/PC/HGM composites of a fixed composition were melt compounded with three different mixing procedures. It was found that the compounding HGMs with PC and then R-PET obtained the most rigidity specimens than the all-in-one compounding or the compounding HGMs with R-PET and then PC. Silane treated HGMs were well distributed in the polymer matrix presenting good interfacial adhesion. However, the notched impact strength of all composites were inspected to be in the same range.

In this work, novel composites based on poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) were prepared and characterized in terms of morphological, thermal, rheological and mechanical properties. Hollow glass microspheres (HGM), alone or surface modified by treatment with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) in order to enhance the compatibility between the inorganic particles and the polymer matrix, were used to obtain lightweight composites with improved properties. The silanization treatment implies a good dispersion of filler particles in the matrix and an enhanced filler–polymer adhesion. The addition of HGM to PCL has relevant implications on the rheological and mechanical properties enhancing the stiffness of the material. Furthermore, the presence of HGM strongly interferes with the crystallization behavior and thermo-oxidative degradation of PCL. The increase of PCL crystallization rate was observed as a function of the HGM amount in the composites. Finally, rotational molding tests demonstrated the possibility of successfully producing manufactured goods in PCL and PCL-based composites on both a laboratory and industrial scale.

Hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) filled poly(acrylonitrile-co-butadiene-co-styrene) (ABS) composites were prepared by means of a twin-screw extruder. S038 HGMs were incorporated at different percentages of 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 wt%. The HGMs were added into the twin-screw extruder at two different feeding zones, and the effect of HGMs loading and specific feeding zone addition on the composites produced was evaluated with regard to morphological, thermal, rheological, physical, and mechanical properties. As a result, the composite density was reduced while the thermal stability, storage modulus, complex viscosity, and tensile and flexural modulus were improved when compared with the ABS matrix. The results also indicate that the addition of 5.0 wt% of HGMs at the feeding zone closer to the die maintains the integrity of the HGMs and promotes composites with higher mechanical properties and lower density when compared with the composites obtained with the addition of HGMs closer to the hopper.

The paper deals with the study physical-mechanical properties of polypropylene composites in dependence on amount of hollow glass microspheres in matrix. Composite material compounded by method "Water cooling strand pelletizing" consists of polypropylene, adhesion promoter and hollow glass microspheres with average diameter (18÷20) μm and different density: 0,46 g/cm3 (iM16K) and 0,60 g/cm3 (iM30K). Measured results are compared with talc filled polypropylene. In terms of experimental measurement is by the differential scanning calorimetry method evaluated also course of prepared composites crystallization. Finally there are concluded measured results not only regarding utility properties of parts but regarding also possibilities to control and optimize processing process.

In this study, the effect of incorporating hollow glass microspheres (HGM) on the  mechanical properties of modified concrete with CR (crumb rubber) was evaluated. Different concrete samples replacing  15% of fine aggregates (total weight of CR + HGM = 15%) were prepared. It was found that the increase in the microsphere content was directly proportional to the slump, compressive strength, and the modulus of elasticity. The increase in the microsphere content was inversely proportional to density. Additionally, we found that in the modified concrete, the width, height and the number of cracks increased as the HGM content increases. The combined sample HGM12.5-CR2.5 (the one with the highest content of microspheres) resulted in concrete with the highest compressive strength of 19.1 MPa, which is 243% stronger than the concrete with only crumb rubber (9.2 MPa). From the XRD results, we were able to detect the presence of different phases formed by hydration during the process of preparing concrete mixtures. The micrographs allowed identifying the fracture in the microspheres during the preparation of the concrete mixtures when they came into contact with the aggregates. The addition of hollow glass microspheres to the mixtures prepared from crumb rubber improved their mechanical properties, and this makes it a potential system that can replace the traditional materials in the production of concrete.

Stability enhancement of highly loaded nano-clay-based flexible polyurethane foams using hollow glass microspheres

Addition of fillers in polyurethane foams enhances the mechanical properties of polymeric foams. However, fillers can be loaded to a certain extent, as higher percentage of fillers in polymeric foam causes structural instability leading to the collapse of foam. In this article, we report the use of hollow glass microspheres as a possible co-filler which enables higher loading of nano-clay in flexible polyurethane foam. It has been observed that the structural and mechanical properties of nano-clay-loaded foams were found to cause instability at 5 wt% loading of nano-clay. Therefore, upon addition of hollow glass microspheres in 5 wt%, nano-clay-loaded polyurethane foam shows remarkable enhancement in terms of stability and mechanical properties of the resultant foams. A 100-fold increment in tensile strength has been observed for 2 wt% hollow glass microspheres and 5 wt% nano-clay-loaded flexible polyurethane foams as compared to conventional (unloaded) polyurethane foams.
