The effects of a cationic polyelectrolyte, polyethylenimine, on the rheological behavior of aqueous mullite and celsian phase, barium strontium aluminosilicate (BSAS) suspensions have been studied to optimize a dip-coating process. The surface of the ceramic particles was characterized in aqueous media using zeta potential measurements. The ionization behavior and hydrodynamic radius of polyethylenimine in aqueous media was characterized by potentiometric titration and dynamic light scattering measurements, respectively. The rheological behavior of concentrated ceramic suspensions containing polyethylenimine was characterized by stress viscometry and elastic modulus measurements. Polyethylenimine imparts repulsive, electrosteric interactions between mullite and BSAS particles in aqueous suspension, resulting in shear thinning flow behavior, linear elastic moduli, and yield stress values that are minimized for suspensions with a critical PEI concentration of 0.2 mg PEI per m2 of mullite and 0.4 mg PEI per m2 of BSAS, respectively. The elastic moduli and yield stress of mullite and BSAS suspensions were nearly identical at equivalent fractions of their critical PEI concentration. Uniform coatings were obtained upon dipping SiC, Si3N4, and Si-metal substrates into shear-thinning suspensions containing PEI at 81–88% of the critical concentration. Dense mullite coatings were demonstrated on SiC substrates after sintering at 1400°C.

This study investigates the use of pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis side streams and conversion to lignocellulose nanofibers. We used a steam-exploded and partial enzymatic hydrolyzed hardwood pulp and an organosolv pretreated softwood pulp to prepare lignocellulose nanofibers (LCNF) via microfluidization. The energies applied on fibrillation were estimated to examine the energy consumption levels of LCNF production. The energy consumptions of the fibrillation processes of the hardwood LCNF production and the softwood LCNF production were about 7040-14080 kWh/ton and 4640 kWh/ton on a dry material basis, respectively. The morphology and dimension of developed hardwood and softwood LCNFs and the stability and rheological behavior of their suspensions were investigated and are discussed.

AbstractSolution behaviors of poly(styrene-co-sodium methacrylate) were studied by fluorescence spectroscopic methods using pyrene as a probe. The mol% of methacrylate was in the range 3.6–9.4. Water and N,N-dimethylforamide(DMF) mixture was used as a solvent (DMF/water = 0.2 mol %). The critical micelle (or aggregation) concentrations of ionomers and the partition coefficients of pyrene were obtained the temperature range 10–80°C. At room temperature, the values of CMCs (or CACs) were in the range 4.7 ×10-6 5.3 ×10-6 g/mL and we could not find any notable effect of the content of ionic repeat units within the experimental errors. Unlike CMCs, as the ion content increased, partitioning of pyrene between the hydrophobic aggregates and an aqueous media decreased from 1.5 ×105 to 9.4 ×104. As the temperature increased from 10 to 80 °C, the values of CMCs increased less than one order of magnitude. While, the partition coefficients of pyrene decreased one order of magnitude and the effect of the ion content became negligible.
