Abstract Poor waste management in the Kathmandu valley has deteriorated the water quality of surface and groundwater sources. The objective of this study was to assess the status of water quality (WQ) in drinking water sources of groundwater and municipal supply (tap water) from the Bagmati river basin in Kathmandu valley. A total of 52 water samples from deep tube-well, tube-well, dug-well, and tap water were collected and analyzed for physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters using standard methods. The results revealed that chloride, total hardness (TH), copper, nitrate, sulfate, and turbidity were within the recommendations of the National Drinking Water Quality Standard (NDWQS). Total coliform (TC) bacteria in 84.6% of the samples exceeded drinking water guidelines. Similarly, the isolates of different enteric bacteria, namely Escherichia coli (21.5%), Citrobacter spp. (20.9%), Klebsiella spp. (19.8%), Proteus spp. (13.9%), Enterobacter spp. (8.72%), Salmonella spp. (5.8%), Shigella spp. (5.2%), and Pseudomonas (4.1%) were identified in the samples collected from the respective sources. Out of the 52 water samples, 7.7% of samples had fecal contamination of somatic coliphage. The groundwater and municipal water supply in the study area are not safe for drinking purposes. Treatment of water is required before its use for household applications.

The analysis of the current state of major water consumers and water complex participants is performed. The data on the increase in centralized water supply of the residential accommodation during 2000-2018 is presented. Significant decrease in the volume of water used for drinking water supply is shown. The improvement of water quality in water bodies of most regions is revealed. The use of fresh water for production needs in the Don River basin decreased from 5.8 to 2.9 km3 from 1990 to 2018. The water circulation coefficient in industry increased from 64 to 85%. The area of irrigated lands in the basin has started to decrease significantly since 1990. In 2000 every second hectare of available irrigated land was watered and in 2016 only every fourth was watered.

Nowadays the issue of small rivers water resources conditions and drinking water supply for the territory of Perm, the major industrial center of the Western Urals, is rather relevant. Within the frameworks of this paper results of investigation of the springs’ conditions and the Iva River/its tributaries water quality have been presented and the assessment of the ecological situation has been made on the grounds of these results. This work won a prize of the Russian National Contest of Water-related Projects among pupils of senior classes -2010 (the second place).

An evaluation of the water quality at the hatchery of Tanjung Riau was conducted to understand the water quality status at the several place of the hatchery unit such as brood stock tanks, larva rearing tank, water storage tank, fi ngerling tank as well as the source of the water supply. The water quality status of Tanjung Riau generally is in a good condition to support the hatchery activities, but for turbidity and salinity were in the exceed and below the normal status and its infl uence on the spawning activity. To overcome the problem on the spawning of the brood stock, the improving of water supply with higher salinity and low turbidity should be set up to ensure the succeeded of the spawning.Key words : Water quality, grouper brood stock, hatchery,Tanjung Riau Batam
