AbstractThe effects of the intensive rainfall episodes in the years 2009 and 2010 in the Kőszeg Mountains were investigated. Channel profiles were constructed at various times during these periods, which were used to describe the channel changes. We measured the length of the incised and filled sections on multiple occasions. We could establish the degree and the direction of the changes using this data. The sediment veneer that developed in the area of Kőszeg town was mapped and its conditions of development were examined. The erosion and accumulation landforms developed during these years were classified and described. These forms are the following: rills, gullies, alluvial fans and sediment veneer. We distinguished and characterised those which had previously formed, but they were changed or increased (the channels). We established the conditions under which the sediment veneer can develop, furthermore those conditions which can increase the chance of the formation of this landform. These conditions are the following: the high density of roads in the catchment areas of valleys leading to settlements, the great thickness of superficial deposit, and the steep slope of the surface of the catchment area. We created theoretical classification of the morphological environment where the development of sediment veneer may happen and identified settlements with structures which promote or prevent the development of the sediment veneer. We determined the probability of the development of the sediment veneer at some settlements in Kőszeg, and suggestions have been given to decrease the chance of the development of this sediment veneer.

Waters and Ravesloot (2001) test the assumption that natural river channel change caused periods of Hohokam cultural reorganization. However, they conclude that channel changes did not correlate with all periods and areas of significant cultural changes and that landscape alone cannot explain Hohokam transformations. An anthropological perspective on political ecology and disasters can explain why environmental processes and events differentially impact societies, differentially impact societies diachronically and differentially impact social groups within societies. We suggest that this perspective may explain the variability described by Waters and Ravesloot.

This paper presents experimental heat transfer results in a two-pass square channel with smooth and ribbed surfaces. The ribs are placed in a staggered half-V fashion with the rotation orthogonal to the channel axis. The channel orientation varies with respect to the rotation plane. A change in the channel orientation about the rotating frame causes a change in the secondary flow structure and associated flow and turbulence distribution. Consequently, the heat transfer coefficient from the individual surfaces of the two-pass square channel changes. The effects of rotation number on local Nusselt number ratio distributions are presented. Heat transfer coefficients with ribbed surfaces show different characteristics in rotation number dependency from those with smooth surfaces. Results show that staggered half-V ribs mostly have higher heat transfer coefficients than those with 90 and 60 deg continuous ribs.

Abstract Power line networks can be used to increase accessibility of broadband communication services in developing countries. Nevertheless, power line networks are affected by stochastic channel alterations triggered by load connection and disconnection, branched line lengths, branches, etc. This impairment affects the implementation of Broadband Power Line Communication (BPLC) system. This paper therefore proposes an Adaptive Decision Feedback Equalisation (ADFE) technique to overcome the stochastic channel changes in powerline communication channels. An appropriate power-line channel model is selected and channel impulse responses are obtained from the selected channel model. The impulse responses are obtained and used for simulation to analysing the the performance of ADFE technique. The ADFE is simulated and then results are analyzed through comparisons with other equalizers in order to examine its performance. Simulation results prove that the adaptive decision feedback equalizer performs better to overcome the effects of stochastic changes in power-line network compared to other techniques.
