Abstract Humic substances dissolved in "black water, white water, and clear water" rivers of the Amazon River basin were compared were humic substances found in podzolic (spodic) and latosolic (oxic) soils of the Amaon region. Humic-type organic solutes in black water originated from organic matter decomposition and ground water drainage from podzolic soils; clear water drains from latosols because colored humic solutes are adsorbed on clay minerals contained in latosols. Comparisons of organic solute distributions in tropical surface waters versus temperate surface waters by dissolved organic carbon fractionation analysis chow that the only significant difference was a lower hydrophilic neutral content of tropical surface waters. This finding is indicative of more rapid decay processes In tropical waters. Black-water rivers of the Amazon contained cndy one-third to one-half the organic solute content contained in black-water rivers of the southeastern United States. About 50 percent of the organic carbon In black waters of the Amazon consisted of colorless non-humic organic solutes. Humic solutes contained in Amazon black water differed from humic solutes found In the Suwannee River in the southeastern United States by having a higher E4/E6 ratio in the visible absorbance spectrum which resulted in water of a more reddish coloration. Both the high E4/E6 ratio and low-angle x-ray scattering data suggest relatively small molecular dimensions for humic solutes in Amazon black water. Organic elemental analyses and infrared analysis of humic substances in Amazon waters and soils were typical for humic substances except for the low content of nitrogen for humic solutes in black water.

Percina crypta, the Halloween Darter, is described as a new species endemic to the Chattahoochee and Flint River systems in Georgia and Alabama. Percina crypta differs from sympatric Percina nigrofasciata in having narrowly separated dorsal saddles (inter-saddle spaces typically less than or equal to saddle width, compared to frequently wider than saddle width in P. nigrofasciata), in usually possessing a single modified scale between the pelvic bases (compared to two or more in P. nigrofasciata), and in having dark wide bands on pectoral-fin rays (versus pectoral fin clear, or with irregular dark marks or weak tessellations on fin rays in P. nigrofasciata). Phylogenetic relationships of P. crypta to other species of Percina are obscure. Percina crypta occurs in shoal and riffle habitats in the Chattahoochee and Flint River mainstems and in a few tributary systems, with the known extant range comprising four disjunct areas separated by mainstem impoundments and altered river reaches.

This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of a novel mind perception manipulation. Mind perception is currently theorized to be an essential aspect of a number of human social psychological processes. Thus, a successful manipulation would allow for the causal study of those processes. This manipulation was created in an attempt to explore the downstream impact of mind perception on the endorsement of conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories are steadily becoming more and more prominent in social discourse. Endorsement of conspiracy theories are beginning to show real world ramifications such as a danger to human health (e.g., in the anti-vaccination movement). A sample of college students (valid N = 53) from a large rural institution in the southeastern United States participated for course credit. These participants completed a mind perception pretest, were randomly assigned to either the manipulation in question (in which participants are asked to consider the ‘mind’ of several targets and write their thoughts about them) or the control condition, and then they completed a posttest. The mixed ANOVA revealed that the interaction term between Time and Condition was not significant. Because the manipulation did not work, other analyses were aborted, in accord with the pre-registration. My Discussion focuses on the procedures and potential shortcomings of this manipulation, in an effort to lay the groundwork for a successful one.
