The effects of ground water, slope stability, and seismic hazard on the stability of the South Fork Castle Creek blockage in the Mount St. Helens area, Washington

Loose deposit is widely distributed along the south route of Sichuan-Tibet highway (in Tibet). Slope disasters often occur because of the broken loose deposit and the low grade highway without complete safeguards for the slope. The paper proposed the integrated treatment technology with micro steel pipe piles and soil nailing frame beam and its work theory and structure design. The slope stability was simulated numerically with Midas-GTS on typical sections to verify the effectiveness of the technology. During simulation, the stable coefficient of slope with or without the integrated treatment technology was calculated. Results showed that the technology with micro steel pipe piles and soil nailing frame beam can improve the stability of loose deposit cutting slopes greatly.

This study presents different land saving and loss reducing schemes. Comprehensively compare the economic benefits of the schemes. It is shown that the optimal scheme can recover tons of coal resources on the south slope, creating significant economic benefits. Numerical simulation was utilized to analyze the changes of slope stability, deformation, and shear strain increment in the process of land saving and loss reducing. Results found that the slope stability decreases rapidly, and the toe of the slope has to be internally discharged in time to compress the slope. Timely follow-up of in-slope rows can improve slope stability. The position of the slope shear exit changes with the increase of the distance of the inner row, and its stability increases gradually. When the distance of the lower inner row exceeds 120 m, the increase of the internal row distance has little influence on the slope stability. When the inner distance exceeds 60 m in the process of internal dumping of upper platform, the position of potential sliding plane gradually changes from the lower dump to the upper and lower dump with the increase of inner dumping distance. It shows that the stability of the dump will be damaged if the upper dump continues to be discharged. Therefore, the distance between the upper and lower dump sites is more important than 60 m. The stability of the south slope is good in the process of mining and internal drainage, and the overall stability of the south slope is controllable, based on slope radar monitoring.

AbstractIn Hungary, the high loess bank of the River Danube in Dunaszekcső has been moving with varying rate since 2007. On the high bank a geodetic monitoring network was established in September 2007. At the same time two borehole tiltmeters and later two ground water level sensors were also installed. The high-sensitive tiltmeters made it possible to study the relationships between the small tilts of the high bank and the ground water levels and the water level of the River Danube. Results of the multiple regression analysis between tilt components and water levels showed that the temporal variation of the regression coefficients is in close connection with the stability of the high bank. The investigations also showed that the movements are in very strong connection with the variation of the ground water level and less depend on the variation of the water level of the River Danube. The characteristic tilt processes, 3–4 weeks before large movements, and the slope stability changes inferred from the relationships between tilts and water level variations can be useful for early warning of landslides.
