Since the early work of Dmde and others on the reflection of light by opaque crystalline media, little progress has been made in the direct determination of the indices of refraction and absorption for such substances. Interest in the optical properties of the opaque minerals, however, has been greatly stimulated by the rapid development in the last few years of the methods of ore-microscopy first brought into prominence by Campbell in 1906. Full theoretical discussions have been given recently by Berek, Koenigsberger, and others, but the only quantitative measure feasible in routine microscopy at present is that of the reflectivity.

Investigations on the possibility of selective grinding and benefication of quartz-pecoraite ores of the Ufaleiskoye deposit have been carried out. Methods of computer X-ray microtomography have been used to study the morphometric features and pore volume parameters of samples, and these data was compared with results of quantitative microstructural analysis. The performed research shows the powerful capabilities of X-ray computer microtomography method for solving scientific and practical problems related to the study of physical and mechanical properties of rocks, the determination of ore minerals liberation, the evaluation of their content, the analysis of the granulometric composition and the spatial distribution of their grains. Analysis of mineralogical and geochemical composition of ores showed that these ores meet the criteria for selective disintegration. An analysis of flotation experiments results showed that when material is grinded in a roll mill, the consumption of reagents is 25% lower than when grinding in a ball mill if the same degree of nickel extraction is achieved.

Mines, quarries, dumps, and tailings are the sources of air pollution. In the Dalnegorsk District (Primorsky Krai, Russia), there are 20 polymetallic deposits. This study aimed to evaluate the particle size and material composition of ambient particulate matter (PM) in Dalnegorsk town and verify the influence of mining and chemical industry facilities on the composition of PM. Ambient particulates were analyzed in samples of snow cover and washout from vegetation (conifer tree needles). According to particle size distribution data, the relative content of particles with a diameter up to 10 microns (PM10) reaches 40% in three snow samples taken in the central part of the town. Among ore minerals, pyrite and arsenopyrite predominated in the samples. In addition, sphalerite, galena, cassiterite, and iron–chromium–nickel formations of various shapes were found in the studied particles. The presence of these metals in airborne PM can negatively affect the incidence rate of PM-associated diseases and the determination of their levels are very useful for air pollution prevention strategies.

Roof and wall slates are fine-grained rocks with slaty cleavage, and it is often difficult to determine their mineral composition. A new norm mineral calculation called slatecalculation allows the determination of a virtual mineral composition based on full chemical analysis, including the amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon (C), and sulfur (S). Derived norm minerals include feldspars, carbonates, micas, hydro-micas, chlorites, ore-minerals, and quartz. The mineral components of the slate are assessed with superior accuracy compared to the petrographic analysis based on the European Standard EN 12326. The inevitable methodical inaccuracies in the calculations are limited and transparent. In the present paper, slates, shales, and phyllites from worldwide occurrences were examined. This also gives an overview of the rocks used for discontinuous roofing and external cladding.
