Traditional fishermen are small-scale fisheries with small-scale catches. They are commonly found in coastal areas and become one of the main income source of coastal communities in developing countries. They use simple fishing gear and small boats in fishing, such as outboard motor and non-powered motor. The changing of seasons (arrest and famine) in Makassar Strait Waters Bordered which is directly to the West coastal area of Pare-Pare City of South Sulawesi Province Indonesia result in the change of the catch and income production of the catching business. That affects the change of household income, especially the small-scale fishermen outboard motor. The multiple regression econometrics analysis method with independent variable estimation model qualitative was applied. The census technique was used in this study with the total of 42 respondents. The findings indicate that the age as the characteristics of the fisherman respondents and the difference of residence areas have an effect on the change of household income of small-scale fisherman. Meanwhile the education, family dependent, and the experience of going to sea do not affect the household income. The productive fishermen has a better physical ability to make an optimal capture for the welfare of their family in meeting the needs in their household.JEL Classification: D19, Q18, Q22

Small-scale fisheries constitute an important component of coastal human societies. The present study describes the small-scale net fisheries on Kalymnos Island (south-east Aegean Sea) that harbors the largest small-scale fleet in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. In addition, this study aims to evaluate their characteristics and economics. Relevant métiers were identified through a multivariate analysis by inputting the main resources and fishing gear data that were recorded during landings. Four main practices were observed being used as fishing gears, gillnets and trammel nets, targeting the species Mullus barbatus, Boops boops, Mullus surmuletus, Scorpaena porcus, and Sepia officinalis. Further analysis, which incorporated data concerning the type of the gear used, revealed 11 distinct métiers. Most of these métiers are practiced by other Mediterranean small-scale fisheries as well, in terms of target species, gear and seasonality. However, the métier that had its target species as B.boops is not practiced in other Mediterranean small-scale fisheries. The seasonal rotation of métiers was determined by the availability of different species rather than their market price. The results revealed the difference in fishing practice used by the fishermen in the study area compared to other fishing practices in the Mediterranean Sea. In particular, the fishermen of this study area targeted more species (B.boops) with a very low market price. They also provided essential information for the development and implementation of management plans aiming at the sustainability of small-scale fisheries.

The Coastal Area of Gunungkidul Regency has beautiful beaches supported by small scale fisheries activities that can attract tourists to visit. The problem of coastal management are waste overload and sectoral ego. The aims of this study are to identify socio-economics characteristics of tourists, the factors of push-pull tourists to visit, and estimate the economic value of coastal areas. Criteria of push factors tourist based on self motivation, while the pull factors based on the perception of tourists. Estimation of economic value using travel cost method. The research was conducted by survey technique. The main tourist destinations to go are to enjoy the beauty of the beach (81%), observation of natural resources (11%), and school assignment (8%), with self motivation are potential of natural resources (62%), closed distance from home (24) %), and low cost (14%). The perception of the tourists associated with the beach is quite beautiful (77%) with clean and well maintained condition (72%), but needs public facilities (38%). Estimated economic value of coastal tourism is IDR 3.1 billion per year showed that coastal areas need to be maintained for future generations. Collaborative and transparent management of coastal resources between community and government is essential to maintain coastal tourism sustainability.

Title: Strategy of Ecosystem Approach to Small-Scale Fisheries Management in Rote Ndao District, East Nusa TenggaraEcosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM) is an effective method to manage sustainable small-scale fisheries. This research aims to evaluate the current status of small-scale fisheries management using EAFM indicators as well as to establish the development strategies of sustainable small-scale fisheries using ecosystem approach in Rote Ndao. The study was conducted in 11 villages in Rote Ndao District, East Nusa Tenggara Province. Data were collected through interviews, fish sampling and measuring referring to EAFM analysis covering 30 indicators grouped into 6 domains. The EAFM analysis generates a composite value ranged between 30,0 – 63,6 with an average value of 52.4. This number indicated that the condition status of the small scale fisheries in Rote Ndao was generally in moderate category. Economic domain is in poor category, while the other domains is in moderate category (fish resource, habitat and ecosystem, fishing technology, social and institution) These findings suggested that small-scale fisheries management in Rote Ndao has not been managed optimally based on sustainable principles in EAFM. Improvement in the economic domain focusing on indicators of fisheries household income and saving ratio were the main priorities for the improvement of small-scale fisheries management in Rote Ndao district

Abstract This research aims to explore the advantage and disadvantage of hiring foreign migrant laborers by small-scale fisheries (SSFs) toward rural coastal areas. The targeted groups are migrant fishermen coming from Indonesia who work onboard Taiwan’s fishing boats within Nanfangao area. First of all, we outline the importance of SSFs, particularly in developing countries. Many SSFs are characterized by self-governing mechanisms that have significant conservation value. This study is not only an exploratory research to find out and discover the range and scope of issues and concepts, but also is an explanatory research to explain how or why things are used to predict, which is carried out to investigate in a timely manner a phenomenon, that has not been studied before, or has not been well explained previously. As a result, this study indicates that the future research needs to demand priority and generate operational definitions for building a better-researched model. AbstractObjectivePeople who eat alone, which is becoming a new trend owing to the increasing proportion of one-person households in Korea, are more likely to become overweight and obese. Therefore, we investigated the association between having a dinner companion and BMI.DesignA linear regression model adjusted for covariates was utilized to examine the association between having a dinner companion and BMI. Subgroup analyses were performed, stratified by age group, gender, household income, educational level and occupation.SettingWe used the data from the Korean Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VI. Our primary independent variable was having a dinner companion while the dependent variable was BMI.SubjectsIn total, 13303 individuals, aged 20 years or over, were analysed.ResultsCompared with the solo eating group, BMI was lower in the family dinner group (β=−0·39, P<0·01) but not in the non-family dinner group (β=−0·06, P=0·67). The subgroup analysis revealed that the difference in BMI was most significant in young generations, such as those aged 20–29 years (β=−1·15, P<0·01) and 30–39 years (β=−0·78, P=0·01).ConclusionsWe found that people who eat dinner alone are more likely to become overweight and obese than those who eat with their family. This association was stronger in males and young adults than their counterparts. Considering the increasing trends in the proportion of single-person households and solo eating, appropriate intervention is needed.
