Metastable β-Ti alloys exhibit various solid-solid phase transitions. Our study is focused on the characterization of the diffusion controlled β→ωiso phase transition. The particles of ω phase play an important part in thermomechanical treatment since they serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites for precipitation of finely dispersed particles of hexagonal α phase. The in-situ observation of the growth of particles of ω phase could be difficult by conventional techniques. However, it was shown recently that the ω phase significantly influences the elastic constants of the material, and the different forms of ω phase have different effects on the elastic anisotropy, as well as on the internal friction coefficients. Therefore, the β→ω phase transformation could be in-situ observed by the precise measurement of the tensor of elastic constants. In this contribution, we present the study of the kinetics of the β→ωiso phase transformation by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. The polycrystalline samples of TIMETAL LCB alloy were in-situ examined by this technique during isothermal and non-isothermal ageing at temperatures up to 300 °C.

Laser confocal differential interference contrast microscopy (LCM-DIM) allows for the study of the reactivity of surface minerals with slow dissolution rates (e.g., phyllosilicates). With this technique, it is possible to carry out in situ inspection of the reacting surface in a broad range of pH, ionic strength and temperature providing useful information to help unravel the dissolution mechanisms of phyllosilicates. In this work, LCM-DIM was used to study the mechanisms controlling the biotite (001) surface dissolution at pH 1 (11 and 25 °C) and pH 9.5 (50 °C). Step edges are the preferential sites of dissolution and lead to step retreat, regardless of the solution pH. At pH 1, layer swelling and peeling takes place, whereas at pH 9.5 fibrous structures (streaks) form at the step edges. Confocal Raman spectroscopy characterization of the reacted surface could not confirm if the formation of a secondary phase was responsible for the presence of these structures.

Abstract. The AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) program over the past 24 years has provided highly accurate remote sensing characterization of aerosol optical and physical properties for an increasingly extensive geographic distribution that includes all continents and many island sites. The measurements and retrievals from the AERONET global network have addressed satellite and model validation needs very well, but there have been challenges in making comparisons to similar parameters from in situ surface and airborne measurements. Additionally, with improved spatial and temporal satellite remote sensing of aerosols, there is a need for higher spatial resolution ground-based remote sensing networks. An effort to address this need resulted in a number of field campaign networks called Distributed Regional Aerosol Gridded Observation Networks (DRAGONs) that were designed to provide a database for in situ and remote sensing comparison and analysis of local to meso-scale variability of aerosol properties. This paper describes the networks that that have contributed and will continue to contribute to that body of research. The research presented in this special issue illustrates the diversity of topics that has resulted from the application of data from these networks.
