This paper deals with a new system design method for motion and vibration control of a three-dimensional flexible shaking table. An integrated modeling and controller design procedure for flexible shaking table system is presented. An experimental three-dimensional shaking table is built. “Reduced-Order Physical Model” procedure is adopted. A state equation system model is composed and a feedback controller is designed by applying LQI control law to achieve simultaneous motion and vibration control. Adding a feedforward, two-degree-of-freedom control system is designed. Computer simulations and control experiments are carried out and the effectiveness of the presented procedure is investigated. The robustness of the system is also investigated.

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have several unique characteristics, including their Young’s modulus-temperature relations, shape memory effects, and damping characteristics. The Young’s modulus of the high-temperature austenite of SMAs is about three to four times as large as that of low-temperature martensite. Therefore, a spring made of shape memory alloy can change its spring constant by a factor of three to four. Since a shape memory alloy spring can vary its spring constant, provide recovery stress (shape memory effect), or be designed with a high damping capacity, it may be useful in adaptive vibration control. Some vibration control concepts utilizing the unique characteristics of SMAs will be presented in this paper. Shape memory alloy springs have been used as actuators in many applications although their use in the vibration control area is very recent. Since shape memory alloys differ from conventional alloy materials in many ways, the traditional design approach for springs is not completely suitable for designing SMA springs. Some design approaches based upon linear theory have been proposed for shape memory alloy springs. A more accurate design method for SMA springs based on a new nonlinear thermomechanical constitutive relation of SMA is also presented in this paper.

Buckling-restrained braces play a critical role as the first-defendant line in dissipating seismic energy and are often used in concrete frame structures to ensure that the main beam–column members are “undamaged” or significantly elastic during medium earthquakes. The design of the reinforced concrete frame structures with buckling-restrained brace is generally based on the assumption of shear deformation of the structure. The conventional seismic design considers the “second-defendant line design” based on the geometric relationship between the axial deformation and strength of buckling-restrained braces and stratified deformation. This article proposes iterative optimization of the buckling-restrained brace design method and layout scheme based on the nonlinear structural response of the calibrated numerical model, and then approximates the nonlinear structure scheme using a linear method. Time history analyses are performed to prove that the linear design method is highly conservative for estimating seismic intensity, and the proposed design method provides more efficient damage distributions in frame components. The results of the nonlinear performance evaluation and energy analysis indicate that the method proposed in this article can meet the performance design requirements achieving multi-performance criteria.

A new control design framework for vibration control, the cooperative control of active and semiactive control, is proposed in the paper. In the cooperative control, a structural system having both of an actuator and a semiactive control device, for example, MR damper and so forth, is defined as the control object. In the proposed control approach, the higher control performance is aimed by the cooperative control between the active control with the actuator and the semiactive control with the semiactive control device. A design method to determine the active control input and the command signal to drive the semiactive control device based on the one-step prediction of the control output is proposed. A simulation example of a control system design for a benchmark building is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed control framework.
