Beliefs are known to influence learning processes and thus become relevant in the instruction of pre-service mathematics teachers with regard to the pedagogical content knowledge taught in courses of mathematics didactics at university. In exploring beliefs about mathematics didactics of pre-service teachers training for secondary school, 50 bachelor students (ca. 5th semester) responded to two open-ended tasks in which they were asked to express their understanding of mathematics didactics. With the help of qualitative content analysis, topics related to mathematics didactics as identified by the participants are categorized. The category system shows that beliefs of participants differ in some respects from what selected research associates with mathematics didactics. Also, technical aspects of lessons like designing lessons are frequently mentioned within the answers, whereas topics with regard to learners or curriculum are rarely addressed.

AbstractStudies of facilitators of professional development (PD) for mathematics teachers have been increasing in order to improve their preparation for conducting PD. However, specifications of what facilitators should learn often lack a conceptualization that captures facilitators’ expertise for different PD content. In this article, we provide a framework for facilitator expertise that is in line with current conceptualizations but makes explicit the content-related aspects of such expertise. The framework for content-related facilitator expertise combines cognitive and situated perspectives and allows unpacking different components at the PD level and the classroom level. Using two illustrative cases of different PD content (probability education in primary school and language-responsive mathematics teaching in secondary school), we exemplify how the framework can help to analyze facilitators’ practices in content-related ways in a descriptive mode. This analysis reveals valuable insights that support designers of facilitator preparation programs to specify what facilitators should learn in a prescriptive mode. We particularly emphasize the importance of working on content-related aspects, unpacking the PD content goals into the content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge elements on the classroom level and developing facilitators’ pedagogical content knowledge on the PD level (PCK-PD), which includes curricular knowledge, as well as knowledge about teachers’ typical thinking about a specific PD content. Situated learning opportunities in facilitator preparation programs can support facilitators to activate these knowledge elements for managing typical situational demands in PD.

AbstractThe purpose of this research is to analyze the competence of teachers as part of the teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge in applying scientific approach in Mathematics PLPG (in-service teacher education and professional training) program rayon 138 Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 2014. The research method used is descriptive with quantitative approach. The subjects of the study consisted of 23 mathematics teachers including mathematics teachers of junior high school, high school and vocational school from Kebumen, Purworejo, and Magelang. Data was collected by filling in a questionnaire at the beginning and end of the training, observing microteaching activities, and documenting the learning material arranged by PLPG participants. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that PLPG especially PLPG rayon 138 Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 2014 gives benefits for the development of teachers’ PCK, especially in terms of teachers’ competence in applying scientific approach. Based on the analysis of learning materials arranged by the teachers and analysis of learning videos, it is known that the majority of the teachers have been able to construct a learning material using scientific approach and implement it properly.  Keywords: teacher’s competence, pedagogical content knowledge, scientific approach, PLPG

This chapter examines the literature on the use of Interactive Whiteboards (IWBs) in secondary mathematics instruction and notes barriers and achievements. The chapter links the use of IWBs to models for teaching Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). Specifically, it proposes ways in which pre-service secondary mathematics teachers can be prepared to use IWBs to help their students develop understanding of critical mathematics ideas while engaging with worthwhile mathematical tasks and engaging in meaningful discourse.
