With the increasing levels of multiculturalism in today’s business and the proliferation and essentiality of information systems, development and management of IS needs to be considered in light of the cultural factors which impact upon its utility. Hofstede’s work on culture is the most widely cited in existence. His observations and analysis provide scholars and practitioners a valuable insight into the dynamics of cross-cultural relationships. However, such a groundbreaking body of work does not escape criticism. Hofstede has been dogged by academics discrediting his work in part or whole. Nonetheless, far more scholars exist who support Hofstede than those that don’t. Most quote Hofstede’s work with unabashed confidence, many including his findings as absolute assumptions. This paper takes a critical look at Hofstede’s work and applies his findings to the practical needs of information systems. The paper finds support for the dimensions promoted by Hofstede in regard to information systems, but recommends continued research to provide greater clarity and continued applicability of his espoused dimensions.

The relevance of the research is determined by the enduring significance of a talented scientist M. N. Khangalov for the Buryat people, whose legacy is huge and still not fully studied. The diaries of Matvey Nikolaevich of the beginning of the XX century are of great scientific interest. The diaries also allow to judge his pedagogical activity, which has become for the scientist-ethnographer not only the main income, but also the manifestation of concern for the Buryat people. For a partial analysis of school daily life of Irkutsk governorate Bilchir district presented in diary entries, attention should be paid to the importance of the demonstration historical processes through the prism of personal perception and the need of using cross-cultural methods and methods of research of memoirs, in particular logical and textual analysis with a clear adherence to general historical principles. M. N. Khangalov in his diaries devoted special attention to certain problems of the educational process, the main of which was the problem of pedagogical staff such as the predominance of Russian teachers in the school who do not know the Buryat language and some of them do not perform their duties in good faith. The physical punishment of children and the need to expand classrooms because of the number pupils’ growth also reflected an awareness of the need for education and the growing confidence in schools, as well as an increase in Buryat teaching staff. As Director of the school, M. N. Khangalov recorded the complexity of school conditions in the national region, its material and organizational instability because of schools were kept at the expense of Steppe Duma and Russian teachers were not interested in coming to Buryat schools, as well as their hesitation in making decisions with moral and ethical considerations. In General, the diaries under study are an important document, which significantly complements, expands and clarifies the published heritage, and points to the need for further study of this ego source.

Background: In 2012 I presented a program to the London IFDM entitled “Breaking the Web of Needless Disability”. The model drew heavily from the latest neuroscientific theory, and was quite well received. This program represents further development of the ideas presented in London to encompass “resilience”.Hypothesis: 1. “Resilience” is a behaviour that is learned and unlearned like any other skill; 2. Understanding how humans think and react in compensation systems will yield valuable insight into the building of resilience to unnecessary disability. Methods: Extension of existing literature and pilot studies examining the differences between those people who suffer injury and recover as expected and those who suffer the same sort of injury and spiral down into despair and dependency. Principal findings: “Resilience” is a specific behaviour beneficially affecting the sense of loss of control that attends injury. There are four specific “styles” of resilience. Each person uses one or more of these styles to a greater or lesser degree. By use of modified psychological inventory tools, the predominant resilience style of an individual can be ascertained, and approaches that enhance their resilience style can be utilised for either prevention or treatment.Discussion: “Habits of thought” are established by repetition. For habits of thinking of one's self as able or disabled, the most significant form of repetition is internal dialog. In resilient people, there are four discrete kinds of dialog that are used to overcome a sense of loss of control. By identifying and bolstering those styles of resilience an injured person can become less susceptible to a sense of loss of control that gives rise to unnecessary disability. Conclusion: The approach is useful in understanding failure to recover as expected, and shows promise for effective individualised treatment for injury management.

Department of English Language № 7 was founded in 2001. Originally its teaching staff included the specialists of the Department of English Language Chair. Since its inception, the chair has paid particular attention to the introduction of innovative teaching methods and techniques. This is realized by a competence-based and personalized approach, implemented by I.A. Winter as well as and cognitive and communicative approaches to education. The development of intellectual, communicative and personal qualities of students and the teachers is the main goal of the educational process, achieved by the teaching staff witch the use of innovative competence-oriented teaching techniques, and types of assessment at the different levels of education.

Modern educational institutions continue their activities in the framework of new Federal state educational standards requirements which have appeared in response to changing needs of the state and society. College, as one of the first stages of education, should most actively respond to these changes, since students are the most active and susceptible category of population that needs competent impact, the results of which will later affect the state of the country's economy. Any college, maintaining its competitiveness and providing high-level training for students, should use innovative teaching methods in its activities. In the article the authors reveal essence of innovation for educational process in college and, for the formation of effective learning conditions. Besides, they propose the use of project method, method of problem situations, research activities and case methods, emphasizing that each of the methods has its advantages and using them separately will not bring proper results. In order to establish the need to use innovative teaching methods in college educational process, the authors conducted an experiment in which two groups of students taught in a traditional way and with implementation of innovative methods. Performance testing was carried out using assessment of indicators identified by the results of the project performed by college students. The experiment allowed the authors to confirm that innovative methods have positive effect on students’ training. Development of students' competencies is increasing. Consequently, the authors experience implemented into college activities can be expanded and introduced into training of the rest of college students

We aimed to establish and evaluate a standardized emotional situation sentence system (ESSS) relevant to the lives of college students to supplement prior literature and adapt to the needs of emotional research. Two studies were designed for this research; study 1 examined the effect of words in the ESSS and study 2 involved the use of pictures. For Study 1, 778 items were selected by 607 college students and 15 experts. We then tested the scale with 80 undergraduate participants. The ESSS sentences were rated on their degree of valence, arousal, and dominance using a 9-point scale. Cronbach’s α (greater than 0.986) of the overall score as well as each sub-score in the three components confirmed the scale’s reliability. As seen on a scatter plot, the results suggest that negative emotions (fear, disgust, anger, sadness, anxiety) are convergent and different from the distribution of positive (happiness) and neutral emotions. Study 2 included 30 participants to compare the difference in valence and arousal between the ESSS and emotional pictures. The results indicate that the ESSS is a standardized, situational, and ecological emotional contextual text system, well-suited to invoke emotion in college students. The ESSS has significantly better arousal and potency than pictures; moreover, it can be applied to experimental studies of anxiety-related emotions. However, emotion pictures have shorter response times, and wider application ranges, and they can include more cross-cultural characteristics compared to words.

Purpose – This article, which is exploratory in nature, considers the experiences of migrant students enrolled in the transnational degree program of an accredited American college located in the Czech Republic. Migrant students have considerable experience in negotiating the different national cultures of their college and of the new country in which they live. Students, participating in a Cross-culture Management course, were asked to maintain reflective journals in which they recorded their experiences of national culture difference. The purpose was to encourage consideration, reflection, and the growing internalization of cross-cultural appreciation and negotiation. Design/methodology/approach – Participants were asked to maintain reflective journals during the semester, in which they identified and considered critical incidents and defining issues in their cross-cultural experiences. Journals were analyzed from an inductive phenomenological perspective with no preconceived imposition of structure, although participants had been informed that the root-metaphor of the journal should be that of “journeys”. Ten emergent themes were identified and a number of these, which seemed to impact national culture adaptation, are discussed. In an attempt to retain the authentic voice of participants, verbatim quotations are reproduced in some detail. Findings – The emergent themes identified give insight into the range of national cultural complexities that these migrant students confronted. Sharing these issues with those who have less national culture experience might increase their understanding of the adaption process. More importantly, the journal increased reflection, prompted deeper sensemaking, and allowed participants to articulate their experiences. Making explicit their own cultural adaption problems may also be beneficial for these participants. Originality/value – Cross-culture education has often taken a didactic approach that emphasized teaching and learning. The reflective journal focuses on an experiential approach to making sense of cultural experience. From a learner perspective, the use of a reflective journal stimulates reflection and contributes to resolution. From an instructor perspective, journals provide valuable insight into issues significant in a developing awareness of a national culture. Journals also provide an unrecognized insight into the personal experiences of international and transnational students that may have implications in their general learning and broader education.

The aim of this research is to present a proposed concept based on the viewpoint of education experts for the development of secondary education in Iraq. The researcher sought to get acquainted with its reality and identify the problems which faces. The descriptive analytical methodology had been used, where the research tool as a questionnaire consisted of (30) items distributed in five areas: school buildings and equipment, curriculum and teaching methods, teaching staff preparation and training, evaluation and exams, and students. The research questionnaire sample consisted of a group of experts who were chosen intentionally, amounting to (50) experts. Those who were of scientific positions, experts in secondary education and those who practiced education and supervision in the secondary schools and university levels, for a period of nearly (40) years. Moreover, their experiences were in various universities and governorates. The results of the research revealed that the mathematical averages at the device field reached (4.32), at the level of buildings and educational equipment reached (4.35), the field of curriculum and teaching methods as well as the field of teachers (4.41), meanwhile the field of evaluation and exams reached (4.35) and the field of students got (4.12). Based on these obtained results, this perception concept has been proposed for the development of secondary education in Iraq. The researcher suggested conducting other studies to benefit from the experiences of countries that fought similar recent wars, to show how to overcome their crises. Finally, the researcher recommended applying the proposed methodology on the teacher’s side, first of all being the cornerstone of the educational process.
