Improving the treatment efficiency of a primary wastewater treatment plant(WWTP),in Alexandria, Egypt, was studied. In order to improve the treatment efficiency of the plant, different improving scenarios were proposed and evaluated. The improvement scenarios are: scenario 1,use of engineered wetland instead of the current treatment system, scenario 2, use of the engineered wetland as a secondary treatment after the existing treatment system and scenario 3,replace the existing treatment system with a secondary WWTP. The scope of this study is to environmentally assess the existing primary WWTP, in addition to assess the possibility of using the engineered wetland for improving the primary WWTP. To evaluate the performance of each treatment system, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach was applied. Based on the results, the main improvement achieved in all the scenarios is in the category of eutrophication and acidification, as the three scenarios have higher removal efficiency for the nutrients than the current system. Unlike the total reduction in the environmental impact, scenario 3 gave the highest reduction in the category of eutrophication and acidification (25%) followed by scenario 2 (24%) and the lowest reduction achieved by scenario 1 (13%). The analysis revealed that the use of combined system from natural and traditional systems (scenario 2) is the best scenario. However, scenario3 achieved a very close result.

Effect and benefits of a product or service could be analyzed and evaluated by life cycle assessment during the whole life cycle. Urban sewage treatment plants could improve and control urban water pollution escalating, but it also had certain harm to environment. Effect and benefits of urban wastewater treatment plant A and B were analyzed and evaluated, 13 factors were selected, and comprehensive benefits were researched quantificationally using the method of analytic hierarchy process. It found that urban wastewater treatment plant A who applied A/O process had better benefits than urban wastewater treatment plant B who applied BIOLAK process.

A reliable model for any wastewater treatment plant is essential in order to provide a tool for predicting its performance and to form a basis for controlling the operation of the process. This would minimize the operation costs and assess the stability of environmental balance. For the multi-variable, uncertainty, non-linear characteristics of the wastewater treatment system, a variable metric chaos optimization neural network (VMCNW) prediction model is established standing on the actual operation data in the wasterwater treatment system. The model overcomes several disadvantages of the conventional BP neural network. Namely:slow convergence, low accuracy and difficulty in finding the global optimum. The results of model calculation show that the predicted value can better match measured value, played a effect of simulating and predicting and be able to optimize the operation status. The establishment of the predicting model provide a simple and practical way for the operation and management in wastewater treatment plant, and have good research and engineering practical value.

Membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems are connected to several advantages compared to the conventional activated sludge (CAS) units. This work aims to the examination of the life cycle environmental impact of an MBR against a CAS unit when treating municipal wastewater with similar influent loading (BOD = 400 mg/L) and giving similar high-quality effluent (BOD < 5 mg/L). The MBR unit contained a denitrification, an aeration and a membrane tank, whereas the CAS unit included an equalization, a denitrification, a nitrification, a sedimentation, a mixing, a flocculation tank and a drum filter. Several impact categories factors were calculated by implementing the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, including acidification potential, eutrophication potential, global warming potential (GWP), ozone depletion potential and photochemical ozone creation potential of the plants throughout their life cycle. Real data from two wastewater treatment plants were used. The research focused on two parameters which constitute the main differences between the two treatment plants: The excess sludge removal life cycle contribution—where GWPMBR = 0.50 kg CO2-eq*FU−1 and GWPCAS = 2.67 kg CO2-eq*FU−1 without sludge removal—and the wastewater treatment plant life cycle contribution—where GWPMBR = 0.002 kg CO2-eq*FU−1 and GWPCAS = 0.14 kg CO2-eq*FU−1 without land area contribution. Finally, in all the examined cases the environmental superiority of the MBR process was found.

In connection with the optimization of operation at the selected Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), it is important to perform an energy audit with an assessment of the use of electricity and the subsequent economic optimization of the equipment of the WWTP. We can perform the energy balance through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis in relation to EN ISO 140 40 [1].The aim of this study case is the analysis of the energy balance of WWTP. The appraisal was performed on three different interpretation variants of specific electricity consumption. The conclusion is a comparison of variants of quantification of specific electricity consumption.
