Using friction stir welding, the electronic container box and lid made from aluminium matrix composites with reinforcement of SiC particle (15 vol% SiCp/Al-MMCs) was welded successfully with T-joint. The temperature distribution of box during the process, mechanical property and microstructure of the joint as well as gas tightness of welded box was investigated. The experimental results indicated that the satisfactory T-joint can be obtained under appropriate friction stir welding parameters. During the welding process, the bottom center, which was used to place the electronic component, reached a quite lower temperature of 100°C. That can ensure safety of components in the box. After the welding process, the microstructure in stir zone was better than in base material due to the refining and homogeneous distribution of the SiC particles. The experimental results showed that the electronic container box after friction stir welding had gas tightness. The He-leakage rate was under 10-8 Pa•m3/s.

Friction stir welding (FSW) process is a solid state welding process in which the material being welded does not melt or recast. This process uses a non-consumable tool to generate frictional heat in the abutting surfaces. The welding parameters and tool pin profile play major roles in deciding the weld quality. In this investigation, an attempt has been made to understand effects of process parameters include rotation speeds, welding speeds, and pin diameters on al.uminum weldment using double shoulder tools. Thermal and tensile behavior responses were examined. In this direction temperatures distribution across the friction stir aluminum weldment were measured, besides tensile strength and ductility were recorded and evaluated compared with both single shoulder and aluminum base metal.

The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of friction stir welding (FSW) parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties of Sc-modified AA2519 extrusion joints. The workpiece was welded by FSW in non-heat-treated condition with seven different sets of welding parameters. For each obtained joint macrostructure and microstructure observations were performed. Mechanical properties of joints were investigated using tensile test together with localization of fracture location. Joint efficiencies were established by comparing measured joints tensile strength to the value for base material. The obtained results show that investigated FSW joints of Sc-modified AA2519 in the non-heat-treated condition have joint efficiency within the range 87–95%. In the joints obtained with the lowest ratio of the tool rotation speed to the tool traverse speed, the occurrence of imperfections (voids) localized in the stir zone was reported. Three selected samples were subjected to further investigations consisting microhardness distribution and scanning electron microscopy fractography analysis. As the result of dynamic recrystallization, the microhardness of the base material value of 86 HV0.1 increased to about 110–125 HV0.1 in the stir zone depending on the used welding parameters. Due to lack of the strengthening phase and low strain hardening of used alloy the lack of a significantly softened zone was reported by both microhardness analysis and investigation of the fractured samples.

10mm thickness AZ31B magnesium alloy was used as the friction stir welding object in this study. Different welding joints were obtained by setting different friction stir welding parameters. Metallographic analysis and impact loading test were carried out on the joint area. The experiment results show that (i) when the rotational speed of the stirring head is 600rpm and the welding speed is 120mm/min, the microstructure of the joint has the characteristics of compactness, thinning, and large-area twinning, which is beneficial to improve the plasticity of the joint area; (ii) the impact load of the joint is the highest, but lower than that of the base material, which is 95.5% of the base material; (iii) the fracture of impact specimen presents ductile fracture.

Friction stir welding (FSW) is established as one of the prominent welding techniques to join aluminium matrix composites (AMCs). It is a solid state welding process, takes place well below the melting temperature of the material, eliminates the detrimental effects of conventional fusion welding process. Although the process is capable to join AMCs, challenges are still open that need to be fulfill to widen its applications. This paper gives the outline of the friction stir welding technique used to join AMCs. Effect of process variables on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints, behavior of reinforcing materials during welding, effect of tool profiles on the joint strength are discussed in detail. Few improvements and direction for future research are also proposed.

AISI 304 stainless steel is one of the grades of steel widely used in engineering applications particularly in chemical equipments, food processing, pressure vessels and paper industry. Friction crush welding (FCW) is type of friction welding, where there is a relative motion between the tool and work-piece. In FCW process, the edges of the work-piece to be joined are prepared with flanged edges and then placed against each other. A non-consumable friction disc tool will transverse with a constant feed rate along the edges of the work-piece, which leads to welding. The joint is formed by the action of crushing a certain amount of additional flanged material into the gap formed by the contacting material. The novelty of present work is that FCW removes the limitations of friction stir welding and Steel work pieces can be economically welded by FCW. Taguchi method of Design of Experiments (DOE) is used to find optimal process parameters of Friction Crush Welding (FCW). A L9 Orthogonal Array, Signal to Noise ratio (S/N) and Analysis of Variance are applied to analyze the effect of welding parameters (welding speed, RPM, tool profile) on the weld properties like bond strength. Grain refinement takes place in friction crush welding as is seen in friction stir welding. Friction crush welding process also has added advantage in reducing distortion and residual stresses.

This study presents conducted heat simulations and experimental jointing flat-plate of aluminum alloy 6061 and SUS 304. Temperature is simulated by the COMSOL software in three states: (1) Preheat the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) by TIG welding, (2) Thermal contact resistance between Aluminium and steel, and (3) The welding process using stiring friction is simulated. The simulations intended to predicting the temperature which is used for preheat and welding process to ensuring the required solid-state welding. The temperature is also determined and checked by a thermal imager comparing with simulation results. Besides, the results of tensile strength is carried out. The Box - Behnken method is used to identify the relationship between the welding parameters (rotation, speed and offset), temperature and tensile strength. The maximum tensile strength is 77% compared to the strength of aluminum alloy. The optimal set of parameters for the process is n = 676 rpm, v = 46 mm / min and x = 0.6 mm. The optimizing welding parameters to achieving good quality of welding process are described. SEM images to determine some properties of welding materials. This is also the basis for initial research to identify some defects in welding of two different materials (IMC thickness and interconnected pores) and the cause of these defects.

Aluminum-Lithium alloys have been found to exhibit superior mechanical properties as compared to the conventional aerospace aluminum alloys in terms of high strength, high modulus, low density, good corrosion resistance and fracture toughness at cryogenic temperatures. Even though they do not form low-melting eutectics during fusion welding, there are still problems like porosity, solidification cracking, and loss of lithium. This is why solid state friction stir welding is important in this alloy. It is known that using Al-Cu-Li alloy and friction stir welding to super lightweight external tank for space shuttle, significant weight reduction has been achieved. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of friction stir tool rotation speed on mechanical and microstructural properties of Al-Cu-Li alloy. The plates were joined with friction stir welding process using different tool rotation speeds (300-800 rpm) and welding speeds (120-420 mm/min), which are the two prime welding parameters in this process.

In this paper, 6 mm thickness dissimilar aluminium alloys of 5083 (H321) and 2219 (O) butt joints were fabricated successfully by friction stir welding process. The quality joints were obtained for the welding parameters of 35 mm/min and 650 rpm with the shoulder diameter to pin diameter ratio as 3. Macrostructure study shows that the interface between the weld nugget and TMAZ is smooth and clear with a flow arm extending towards the top surface of the weld in the 2219 side. The boundary on the 5083 side between the weld nugget and the TMAZ was irregular. The obtained joint efficiency is around 92.57% based on the UTS of the softer material (AA2219). The tensile test results showed that the specimens failed in the heat affected zone of the softer base material 2219. The hardness values in the stirred zone are higher than the softer base material of alloy 2219. The friction stir welded dissimilar joint 2219-5083 exhibited better general corrosion characteristics than the 2219-2219 weld and 2219 base material.

For aerospace applications, light-weight boxes to protect and carry electronic equipment need to be sealed. The main requirements on the components are low thermal expansion and gas tightness. The common material for such an application is a metal matrix composite (MMC). The MMC suggested here consists of A356 aluminum alloy matrix with 15 vol.% SiC particle reinforcement. A safe limit for the electronic component inside the boxes during sealing is determined to be 180°C. Due to the boundary conditions gas tightness and low heat input, Friction Stir Welding (FSW) might be an alternative to the employed joining techniques. For the FSW process the T-Joint is the most appropriate joint geometry in respect to the box design. The geometry of the lid has to ensure the backing system for the stir zone inside the box. A successful welding of the box was done after a joint geometry optimization. The examination of the welded box concerns material characterization with microscopic methods, measuring thermal expansion in base material and stir zone and temperature measurement while FSW.

PurposeThe main purpose of the present work is to evaluate, the microstructural and mechanical properties of friction stir welded plates of AZ91D magnesium alloy with 3 mm thickness, and to determine the optimum range of welding conditions.Design/methodology/approachMicrostructure and fractographic studies were carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Vickers micro hardness test was performed to evaluate the hardness profile in the region of the weld area. The phases in the material were confirmed by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Transverse tensile tests were conducted using universal testing machine (UTM) to examine the joint strength of the weldments at different parameters.FindingsMetallographic studies revealed that each zone shown different lineaments depending on the mechanical and thermal conditions. Significant improvement in the hardness was observed between the base material and weldments. Transverse tensile test results of weldments had shown almost similar strength that of base material regardless of welding speed. Fractographic examination indicated that the welded specimens failed due to brittle mode fracture. Through these studies it was confirmed that friction stir welding (FSW) can be used for the welding of AZ91D magnesium alloy.Research limitations/implicationsIn the present study, the welding speed varied from 25 mm/min to 75 mm/min, tilt angle varied from 1.5° to 2.5° and constant rotational speed of 500 rpm.Practical implicationsMagnesium and aluminum based alloys which are having high strength and low density, used in automotive and aerospace applications can be successfully joined using FSW technique. The fusion welding defects can be eliminated by adopting this technique.Originality/valueLimited work had been carried out on the FSW of magnesium based alloys over aluminum based alloys. Furthermore, this paper analyses the influence of welding parameters over the microstructural and mechanical properties.
