A series of novel binuclear transition metal complexes was synthesized by reaction of a Schiff base ligand (1-Methyl-2-(2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-pyrimidin-4-ylimino)-propylideneamino-acetic acid) (LaH) derived from 4-amino-pyrimidine-2-one, diacetyl, glycine and corresponding chloride salt of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) metals in 1:1 (metal : ligand) molar ratio. The compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance measurement, magnetic moment measurement and various spectral studies viz. IR, UV-visible, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, EPR and ESI-MS. Molar conductance measurement data revealed non-electrolytic nature of metal complexes. Electronic absorption spectral data, electronic paramagnetic resonance parameters and magnetic moment values revealed an octahedral geometry for binuclear metal complexes. Cyclic voltammetric study of Ni(II) complex shows a couple of one electron anodic responses near 0.70 V and 1.10 V. In vitro biological activity of Schiff base ligand and binuclear complexes has been checked against bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi) and fungi (Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis) to assess their antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Some coordination complexes of Co(??), Ni(??), Cu(??), Cd(??) and Hg(??) are reacted in ethanol with Schiff base ligand derived from of 2,4,6- trihydroxybenzophenone and 3-aminophenol using microwave irradiation and then reacted with metal salts in ethanol as a solvent in 1:2 ratio (metal: ligand). The ligand [H4L] is characterized by FTIR, UV-Vis, C.H.N, 1H-NMR,13C-NMR, and mass spectra. The metal complexes are characterized by atomic absorption, infrared spectra, electronic spectra, molar conductance, (C.H.N for Ni(??) complex) and magnetic moment measurements. These measurements indicate that the ligand coordinates with metal (??) ion in a tridentate manner through the nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the ligand, octahedral structures are suggested for these complexes. Antibacterial activity of the ligand [H4L] and its complexes are studied against (gram positive) and (gram negative) bacteria [Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus]. The proposed structure of the complexes using the program, Chem office (2006) and the general formula has been given for the prepared ligand complexes K2[M(H2L)2].

New Fe(II),Co(II),Ni(II),Cu(II) and Zn(II) Schiff base complexes which have the molar ratio 2:1 metal to ligand of the general formula [M2( L) X4] (where L=bis(2-methyl furfuraldene)-4-4`-methylene bis(cyclo-hexylamine) ) were prepared by the reaction of the metal salts with the ligand of Schiff base derived from the condensation of 2:1 molar ratio of 2-acetyl furan and 4-4`-methylene bis (cyclohexylamine). The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis using atomic absorption spectrophotometer ,molar conductance measurements, infrared, electronic spectra, and magnetic susceptibility measurement. These studies revealed binuclear omplexes. The metal(II) ion in these complexes have four coordination sites giving the most expected tetrahedral structure and square planar for Cu(II)ion.

A new Schiff base, derived from isatin and an amino acid, aspartic acid, and its complex with Zinc(II) were synthesized. The formation of Schiff base and its Zn(II) complex were characterized and confirmed by elemental (C,H and N) analysis; molar conductance, magnetic measurements; and FT-IR and UV-VIS spectroscopic methods. From the electronic spectral and molar conductance data, four - coordinated tetrahedral geometry was assigned to the synthesized complex. In addition, the redox behavior of the complex was investigated using cyclic voltammetry technique. The redox properties were scrutinized with nitrogen as well as aerobic atmospheres. The redox process was measured to follow one electron reversible mechanism. The electrochemical properties of the complex have not been affected by the atmospheric conditions due to the non-reactivity of the complex with atmospheric gases like CO2 and O2.

Novel tetra dentate Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), VO(II) and Zn(II) Schiff base complexes have been synthesized from salicylidene-4-iminoantipyrine and tyrosine. The synthesized Schiff base complexes was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction studies (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FT-IR, ESR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, UV-vis, molar conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The general formula of complexes was confirmed as [ML] type [M = Cu(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Ni(II) and VO(II); L = C27H24N4O4]. Magnetic susceptibility, IR and UV-vis, spectral data showed that all the complexes have square planar geometry except vanadyl complex which suggests square pyramidal geometry. Lower molar conductance values proved that all the chelates were non-electrolytic nature. The X-band ESR spectra of [CuL] and [VOL] complexes in DMSO solution suggest that the complexes were predominant covalent character. Powder XRD and SEM image pattern evidenced that all the compounds were crystalline in nature and their size ranges from 100-40 nm. Calf thymus DNA binding potential of [CuL] and [VOL] complexes shows that the binding occurs through intercalation mode with low binding constant. The analgesic, CNS, antiulcer and antimicrobial activities of the investigated compounds report reveals that the chelates were significant effect than free Schiff base.

New series of organotin(IV) complexes and Schiff bases derived from amino acids have been designed and synthesized from condensation of1H-indole-2,3-dione, 5-chloro-1H-indole-2,3-dione, andα-amino acids (phenylalanine, isoleucine, and glycine). All compounds are characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance measurements, and molecular weight determinations. Bonding of these complexes is discussed in terms of their UV-visible, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H,13C, and119Sn NMR) spectral studies. The results suggest that Schiff bases behave as monobasic bidentate ligands and coordinate with dibutyltin(IV) in octahedral geometry according to the general formula [Bu2Sn(L)2]. Elemental analyses and NMR spectral data of the ligands with their dibutyltin(IV) complexes agree with their proposed distorted octahedral structures. Few representative compounds are tested for their in vitro antibacterial activity against Gram-positive (B. cereus,Staphylococcusspp.) and Gram-negative (E. coli,Klebsiellaspp.) bacteria. The results show that the dibutyltin complexes are more reactive with respect to their corresponding Schiff base ligands.

Mononuclear metal complexes of the type [ML1]Cl2 (where, M = = Cu(II), Co(II) or Ni(II) and L1 = ligand) were synthesized by the reaction of a new N4 coordinating ligand, derived from diacetylbisethylenediamine with benzoic acid, and the corresponding hydrated metal chloride salts. The metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, melting point determination, molar conductance and magnetic moment measurements, IR, UV-Vis, 1H- and 13C-NMR, and ESR spectroscopy. The ligand and all the metal complexes were stable in the solid state at room temperature. From the analytical and spectroscopic investigations, the stoichiometry of the complexes was found to be 1:1 (metal:ligand). Based on the electronic spectra and magnetic moment data, the metal complexes had a square planar geometry. The molar conductance values show the 1:2 electrolytic nature of the metal complexes. A cyclic voltammetric study of the Cu(II) metal complex has also performed, which showed one electron quasi-reversible reduction around -0.92 to -1.10 V. In vitro biological activities of the ligand and metal complexes was checked against two bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli and two fungi Aspirgillus niger and A. flavus which showed the antibacterial and antifungal properties of the ligand and its metal complexes.

Twelve new Schiff base derivatives have been prepared by the condensation reaction of different amino substituted compounds (aniline, pyridin-2-amine, o-toluidine, 2-nitrobenzenamine, 4-aminophenol, and 3-aminopropanol) and substituted aldehydes such as nicotinaldehyde, o,m,p-nitrobenzaldehyde, and picolinaldehyde in ethanol using acetic acid as a catalyst. The envisaged structures of the all the synthesized ligands have been confirmed on the basis of their spectral analysis FT-IR, mass spectroscopy, 1H- and 13C-NMR. In vitro screening of their antibacterial and antifungal potential against Escherichia coli bacterium and Fusarium oxysporum f.sp albedinis (F.o.a) fungus, respectively, revealed that all the ligands showed no significant antibacterial activity, whereas most of them displayed good antifungal activity. Homology modeling and docking analysis were performed to explain the antifungal effect of the most and least active compound against two F.o.a fungus proteins.
