Most renewable energy (RE) studies focus on technology readiness, environmental benefits and/or cost savings. The market permeation, viability and adoption of RE technologies such as micro hydropower (MHP), however, require the alignment of other interrelated factors, such as the socio-technical, institutional and political dimensions. This is particularly the case where the energy recovery potential in decentralised water networks is being explored as part of a wholesome sustainability strategy by and for individual and communal prosumers. This study employs a socio-technical approach to understand factors that influence the perceived viability and adoption of MHP in group water-energy schemes. Methods included a progressive literature review to formulate a conceptual framework for the implementation of MHP systems. The framework was validated using survey data from representative stakeholders from groups schemes in Ireland and Spain. These stakeholders were sampled and surveyed at the stage of considering the adoption of MHP in their water networks. The findings highlight the push–pull factors and discusses the opportunities and barriers to the adoption of MHP systems. It confirms that the market, institutional and policy context, cost and financial benefits, social support and collaborative services combine to influence the adoption of MHP technology. Thus, a framework for evaluating the socio-technical viability of MHP systems based on these more realistic integrated, multi-dimensional criteria is proposed.

Water buffaloes wallow in water to combat heat stress during summer. With the decreasing reservoirs for wallowing, the farmers use sprinklers to cool the buffaloes in Pakistan. These sprinklers use a large quantity of groundwater, which is becoming scarce. The objective of the current study was to determine the effect of different sprinkler flow rates on the physiological, behavioral, and production responses of Nili Ravi buffaloes during summer. Eighteen buffaloes were randomly subjected to three sprinkler flow rate treatments in a double replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design. The flow rates were 0.8, 1.25, and 2.0 L/min. During the study, the average afternoon temperature humidity index was 84.6. The 1.25 and 2.0 L/min groups had significantly lower rectal temperature and respiratory rates than the 0.8 L/min group. Water intake was significantly higher in the 0.8 L/min group. Daily milk yield was higher in the 1.25 and 2.0 L/min groups than in the 0.8 L/min group. These results suggested that the sprinkler flow rates > 0.8 L/min effectively cooled the buffaloes. The sprinkler flow rate of 1.25 L/min appeared to be more efficient, as it used 37.5% less water compared to the 2.0 L/min.

Evidence of immunogenic cell death as a predictor of response to cancer therapy has increased interest in the high molecular group box 1 protein (HMGB1). HMGB1 is a nuclear protein associated with chromatin organization and DNA damage repair. HMGB1 is also a damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) protein and promotes proinflammatory signaling in a paracrine and autocrine manner. Extracellular HMGB1 can promote activation of NF-kB and is associated with several chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, including sepsis, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), as well as cancer. In this review, we describe studies that demonstrate the use of deacetylase inhibitors and HMGB1 inhibitors to alter the expression and localization of HMGB1 in cancer cells, with a focus on lung cancer. The drugs described herein are well established and frequently used in human and small mammal studies. The main objective of this review is to summarize the potential benefit of targeting posttranslational modification of HMGB1 to decrease inflammatory signaling in the tumor microenvironment, and perhaps lead to improved response to current immunotherapeutic approaches.

Abstract A model for the spin lattice relaxation time of the protons of dimethylammonium in the Redfield limit and common spin temperature approximation is developed. The three fold reorientations of the methyl groups, the rotation of the whole molecular group around its two fold symmetric axis and possible correlations among these motions are considered. The effect of these processes on the dipolar interactions among the protons within the same molecular group is taken into account. The resulting relaxation rate is powder averaged and used to explain the experimental data in literature on [NH2(CH3)2]3Sb2Br9 . The analysis shows that dynamically inequivalent groups exist in this compound and that the effect of proposed correlation among the different motions on the final results is negligible.

Use of mesenchymal stem cells and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) have been widely studied to promote bone healing. evaluate effect of photobiomodulation on total number of cells (TNC) and cell viability (CV) of fresh bone marrow aspirate (BMA). Femur BMA from 10 adult rats was collected and a cell concentration of 1x107 cell/mL was obtained. Cell suspension was deposited on 96 well cell culture plates and distributed in groups: 1) RPMI, positive control; 2) Distilled Water, negative control; 3) Red Laser (RL); 4) Infrared Laser (IRL). Groups RL and IRL received LLLT application right after incubation. Cells were incubated for 24 h. TNC and CV were assessed through trypan blue assay after 1, 3, 6, 10 and 24 h of incubation. Data distribution was verified by Shapiro-Wilk test. Kruskal-Wallis test was used for intergroup and intragroup comparisons (p<0.05). TNC: after 1 and 3 h, groups RL and IRL presented significantly higher TNC than Group Water; after 6 and 10 h, groups RPMI, RL and IRL presented significantly higher TNC than Group Water. CV: after 1 h, groups RL and IRL showed significantly higher percentage of VC than Group Water; after 3, 6 and 10 h, all groups presented significantly higher percentage of VC than Group Water. It can be concluded that LLLT enhanced number and viability of fresh bone marrow aspirate cells.

Introduction: Improving balance in the daily lives of the elderly plays an important role, especially in reducing their risk of falling. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks water resistance training with dark chocolate supplementation on the balance of the elderly.Methods: In this study, 38 elderly people with an age range of 73-60 years were randomly divided into four groups. Participants in groups, included water resistance training and water resistance training + dark chocolate, performed water resistance training for eight weeks. In this period, groups of dark chocolate and water resistance training + dark chocolate, consumed 6 pieces of dark chocolate 83%, 5 gr per day, and the control group did not have any training or supplementation. The stork test (flamingo) was used to assess balance. The results of covariance analysis (ANOVA) showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the four groups. Data were evaluated using Excel and SPSS-25 (p≤ 0.05). Results: The adjusted means after eliminating the effect of pre-test scores showed that the water resistance-training group had a higher mean than the other three groups and the weakest scores belonged to the control group. The results of other groups were as followed: experimental group 18.77, chocolate group 16.88, combined group (water resistance training + dark chocolate) 17.24 and control group 9.77. The results of Benferoni test showed that there was a significant difference between the water resistance training group and the control group (p = 0.006). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, it seems that eight weeks of water resistance training and dark chocolate supplementation can improve the balance and quality of life of the elderly.

The foundation of the Alliance of Community-Owned Water Services in Europe (ACOWAS-EU), established during the consultation period for the 2020 recast of the European Drinking Water Directive, has shone a new light on community-owned drinking water supplies (CoDWS). CoDWS are drinking water supplies that are administered, managed, and owned by the local community membership that each supply serves. This paper reviews the presence of CoDWS within the five founding regions of ACOWAS-EU—Austria, Denmark, Finland, Galicia in Spain, and Ireland—and the co-operative model structure that underpins the sector. Although the co-operative structure for CoDWS has been prominent since the mid-20th century (and sometimes even earlier), there is a dearth of research into the sector’s importance and existence in an international context. Through a detailed case study, the Irish CoDWS sector (known in Ireland as the group water scheme sector) is analysed in depth, in terms of both its evolution and the opportunities and challenges it faces today. Areas, such as water quality, biodiversity, education, and community-involvement are discussed in particular, providing key learnings that may also be of benefit to the other CoDWS sectors within ACOWAS-EU and further afield.

Within Ireland, both the public water supply and group water scheme (GWS) sectors are crucial entities in the provision of water supply to individuals. In this study, variances in water charges and operation are assessed via an in-depth survey of 104 GWSs in order to establish the range in both domestic and commercial charges, and also to establish the factors influencing these charges within the rural water sector. Results are compared with the commercial water charges of the 34 local authorities involved in the provision of public water and wastewater services. Devoid of regulation, tariff setting is highly decentralised with substantial variations in connection, fixed and volumetric charges across both sectors. Greater transparency is essential to establish the full cost of supply to domestic and non-domestic consumers. Findings reveal average GWS volumetric charges to be 35% lower than public supplies, resulting in communities wishing to retain ownership of their schemes as there is much greater control over water pricing. Historic underinvestment has led to an infrastructure deficit and deficiencies within the public supply sector are discussed, such as inadequate revenue collection and high unaccounted-for water. Furthermore, recommendations are made towards effective operation and pricing in light of proposed government plans to establish a national water authority.

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) resin is one of the most commonly used materials for fabricating the base of removable orthodontic appliances. It is known that PMMA resin can promote the adhesion of microbes due to its surface porosity and from long-term use. Vanillin-incorporated PMMA resin has been reported to have antimicrobial effects against Candida albicans. However, the influence of vanillin incorporation on the water sorption and solubility of self-curing orthodontic PMMA resin has not been studied. Objective: To determine the water sorption and solubility of self-curing orthodontic PMMA resin incorporated with different concentrations of vanillin. Materials and methods: Three groups of self-curing orthodontic PMMA resin incorporated with 0.1% and 0.5% vanillin as well as PMMA without vanillin as a control were prepared with ten specimens per group. Water sorption and solubility tests were performed according to ISO 20795-2:2013 specifications. One-way ANOVA and Tukey’s multiple comparison tests at a p<0.05 significance level were used to analyse the data. Results: All three groups met ISO standard requirements. The means of water sorption values showed insignificant differences among the three groups even though the value of the 0.5% vanillin group tended to decrease. Water solubility of the 0.1% vanillin-incorporated group was not significantly different when compared with the control group whereas that of the 0.5% vanillin-incorporated group exhibited a significant lower value when compared with both control and 0.1% vanillin-incorporated groups. This suggests that increasing concentrations of vanillin would decrease the water solubility of PMMA resin. Conclusion: The incorporation of 0.5% vanillin into self-curing orthodontic PMMA resin could significantly reduce its water solubility and showed a trend of less water sorption property. Even with different vanillin concentrations, the water sorption and water solubility properties of PMMA resin were within the ISO standards. Nevertheless, further studies are recommended to determine the amount of residual monomer present in different concentrations of vanillin-incorporated PMMA resin.
