Student performance assessments play an important role in the training process. They reflect how well students performed their learning activities. The goals of assessment are multiple according to their functions. Among assessment forms currently applied at higher education institutions, the formative assessment shows its strength over others by offering great contributions to the innovation of teaching and learning activities. Appropriate use of this form of assessment leads to a successful teaching and learning process, and a much better result and quality of training. This paper focuses on the view of formative assessment management from teachers’ lenses in order to help adjust teaching/learning methods and curriculums. To learn more about the reality of formative assessment for English majors and how it is managed by various stakeholders, a questionnaire and interviews were used. The investigation's findings reveal a substantial lack of teacher knowledge of the nature and strengths of formative assessment. These findings also point to new ways to increase student motivation through the use of formative assessment.

The College Advisory Program offered by Total Vision Soccer Club aims at providing young players with the opportunity to learn how to navigate the collegiate recruiting process, market themselves to college coaches, and increase their exposure to potential colleges and universities. A team of external evaluators (authors of this chapter) conducted a formative evaluation to determine what the program needs to do to reach its goal. By following a systemic evaluation process, the evaluation team investigated five dimensions of the program and collected data by reviewing various program materials and conducting surveys and interviews with players and their parents, upstream stakeholders, and downstream impactees. By triangulating the multiple sources of data, the team drew a conclusion that most program dimensions were rated as mediocre although the program had several strengths. The team provided evidence-based recommendations for improving the quality of the program.

Teaching is filled with spirited debate about the best practices for improving students' learning and performance. Today, educators from different parts of the world are supporting the use of rubrics as an instructional tool and highlighting the enormous contributions that rubrics can make in the teaching-learning paradigm. A rubric is a useful grading tool which can help instructors to grade students' work in a more consistent, reliable and unbiased manner. A well-designed rubric can help students to identify their strengths and weaknesses and be more objective about their own quality of work. Although some studies have examined the benefits of rubrics on student performance levels; nevertheless, research on rubrics is still at an early stage. In this paper we will explore what a rubric is, the different types of rubrics that can be utilized in the classroom and the process of constructing a rubric. We will also discuss how the application of rubrics in teaching can help educators to improve student learning and provide more effective feedback on student performance.

The evaluation process is complex and extremely important in the teaching/learning process. Evaluations are constantly employed in the classroom to assist students in the learning process and to help teachers improve the teaching process. The use of active methodologies encourages students to participate in the learning process, encourages interaction with their peers, and stimulates thinking about physiological mechanisms. This study examined the performance of medical students on physiology over four semesters with and without active engagement methodologies. Four activities were used: a puzzle, a board game, a debate, and a video. The results show that engaging in activities with active methodologies before a physiology cognitive monitoring test significantly improved student performance compared with not performing the activities. We integrate the use of these methodologies with classic lectures, and this integration appears to improve the teaching/learning process in the discipline of physiology and improves the integration of physiology with cardiology and neurology. In addition, students enjoy the activities and perform better on their evaluations when they use them.

Background: Medical educators have valid concerns over the deteriorating documentation skills of medical students after obtaining a pediatric history. Formative assessment enhances learning by providing feedback to the learners. Though formative assessments are popular in medical education, data to establish their educational benefits are lacking. This study was conducted to assess the areas of concern in pediatric history taking and to determine the effect of formative assessment on documentation skills. Methods: This comparative study involved 80 MBBS students of eighth semester during pediatric clinical postings of one-month duration. At the end of first session, students interviewed a standardized patient and documented the history in a case record. Marks were awarded based on the check list. Feedback was imparted based on the case record. Students’ perception was collected through the questionnaire. The same teaching learning methodology was carried out in the second session. Data obtained from the questionnaire and marks scored was analysed. Results: Documentation of growth and development (1.89 + 0.59), immunization history (2.01 + 0.53) were the concern areas identified in our study. Among 80 students, the low achievers in the first and second session was 66 and 13 respectively. The perception of students about their repertoire of interviewing skills was statistically significant (p <0.05). Formative evaluation had a statistically significant effect on the knowledge and performance of students, particularly low achievers (p <0.05).Conclusions: Formative assessment process identified the areas of concern in pediatric history taking and enhanced the documentation skills following immediate feedback. It had a beneficial effect on the students’ confidence, enthusiasm, learning and performance.

This research paper describes the variety of the evaluation process in three language centers of public universities in Ecuador. The main objective is to explore the evaluation practices that are used, their effectiveness in the teaching-learning process and the results obtained in English language learning. Researchers conduct interviews with teachers, principals, and students. In addition, evaluation instruments such as tests and other evaluation materials were analyzed. The study reveals that the students who achieved the highest scores are those who study in a language center which uses a more structured evaluation system. Therefore, the data analysis shows that there is a close relationship between student performance and the evaluation systems applied in the different language centers.
