In view of the importance of foliar application of macro and micro nutrients to increase the yield and quality of guava under high density planting system, an experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design consisting of nine treatment combinations with three replications. [(Control - Fertigation alone), (NPK (19:19:19)), (NPK + Zn), (NPK + Ca), (NPK + B), (NPK + Zn + Ca), (NPK + Zn + B), (NPK + Ca + B), (NPK + Zn + Ca + B). Among the treatments, fruit weight (225.22 g), fruit volume (215.35 ml),number of fruits per plant (80.35), fruit yield per plant(17.67 kg plant-1), TSS(10.60 0Brix), titratable acidity (0.196 %) and pectin content (1.31 %) was found to be significantly higher with the foliar application of NPK @ 1% + Zn @ 0.5 % + B @ 0.4%. The foliar spray of NPK @ 1% + Ca@ 0.2% + B@ 0.4% significantly increased the fruit diameter (7.85 cm), and ascorbic acid content (159.84 mg 100g-1). Thus, foliar spray of NPK, zinc and boron maintained more number of fruits per plant and improved the fruit set leading to an 18% increase in yield. Whereas, the addition of calcium to the plants increased the ascorbic acid content of the fruit and pectin that enhanced the shelf life of the fruit

A field experiment was carried out during summer season of 2013 and 2014 to find out the effect of inorganic and bio-fertilizers on the growth, yield and quality of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cv. Pusa Hybrid -2. The results revealed that plants growth and yield of tomato can be increased with the application of Azospirillum along with recommended dose of NPK (120kg N + 60kg P + 60kg K/ha). The ascorbic acid content of fruits were found maximum with the 80kg N + 40kg P + 60kg K/ha with Azospirillum. The TSS was improved by the application of 80kg N + 40kg P + 60kg K/ha with Phosphobacteria.

The present experiment on bhendi consisted of 12 parents (9 lines and 3 testers) with their 27 F1 hybrids developed through line x tester mating design with three replications in randomized block design. Parents and hybrids differed significantly for gca and sca effects, respectively. Among the parents, maximum gca effect was found in EC 169329 and Aruna for fruit length, EC 102605 and Arka Anamika for fruit girth, EC 112241 and Arka Anamika for fruit yield per plant, EC 169335 and Aruna for ascorbic acid content, EC 109454 and Arka Anamika for mucilage content. The crosses EC 169331 x Kashi Kranti, EC 102605 x Arka Anamika and EC 169344 x Arka Anamika were found as good specific combiners for fruit length, fruit girth and yield per plant respectively. The hybrids EC 169335 x Aruna and EC 109454 x Arka Anamika exhibited maximum significant positive sca effects for quality traits like ascorbic acid content and mucilage content respectively.

The field experiment was carried out in the olericulture unit, MARS, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during 2019-2020 to study the effect of zinc and boron on seed yield and quality of onion on variety cv. Bhima super at different levels of both basal and foliar application. The treatments consists of soil application of zinc sulphate (5 kg/ha and 10 kg/ ha), Borax (4 kg/ha and 6 kg/ha) and foliar application of zinc sulphate (0.25 % and 0.5 %), Borax (0.1 % and 0.2 %) and control without micronutrient application replicated thrice in a Randomized Block Design. The foliar application was given at 45 days after bulb planting. From the present investigation, a significant increase in seed yield and quality parameters were recorded with foliar spray of zinc sulphate (0.5 %) and borox (0.2 %) viz., seed yield per plant (4.29 g), seed yield per plot (214.13 g) and seed yield per hectare (9.91q/ha). The germination percentage was found maximum from the treatment foliar application of zinc sulphate (0.5 %) (84.8%) and the other seed quality parameters was found best from the treatment foliar spray of ZnSO4 (0.5%) and B (0.2 %) i.e., higher shoot length (8.83 cm), root length (7.21 cm), seedling vigour index (1352) and test weight (3.75 g). The non-significant differences were observed due to influence of soil and foliar application of zinc and boron on electrical conductivity and seedling dry weight.

The aim of this work was evaluation of 24-epibrassinolide influence on yield and quality of head lettuce in optimal and reduced moisture conditions and work out recommendation of 24-brassinosteroids use for lettuce in growers praxis. Field trials were carried out on land belonging to the Demonstration and Research Station of CULS in Prague – Troja in 2009 and 2011. Planting on 27. 8. 2009 and 20. 8. 2011 was done at planting space 0.25 × 0.30 m, each variant in four repetition (single plot 4,5 m2). Seedlings of head lettuce (cultivar Santoro – Rijk Zwaan) were used. Irrigation was carried out by microspraying, and was based on current values of efficient water capacity (EWC); the critical value of the EWC was 80% for optimally irrigated fields (irrigation O), and 50% for variants with reduced levels of irrigation (irrigation S). The total amount of irrigation water during vegetation were as follows: the variant with optimal levels of irrigation (O) had 131 mm in 2009 and 123 mm in 2011; the variant with reduced levels of irrigation (S): 58 mm in 2009 and 63 mm in 2011 Three variants were in both (O and S) conditions: A – no application of 24-epibrassinolide, B – 1 × 24-epibrassinolide application immediately after planting, and C – application of 24-epibrassinolide 2 x (immediately after planting and then after 14 days after 1st application). Concentration of 24-epibrassinolide was 10−6. Following parameters of head lettuce were set after harvesting (10.–12. 10. 2009 and 14.–15. 10. 2011): weight of single heads, marketable heads, marketable yield (in pcs/ha and t/ha) and ascorbic acid and nitrate contents. Influence of 24-epibrassinolide on single lettuce head weight was not significant, decrease of head weight was evident after 24-epibrassinolide application in some variants. Significant increase of marketable heads number and their percentages were noted after 24-epibrassinolide application in optimal moisture conditions – in variant B of 12 261 heads/ha (11.1 %) and in variant C of 16 279 heads/ha (14.7 %) compared with non treated variant A. This trend was not visible in reduced moisture conditions. Increase (nonsignificant) of total marketable yield (in t/ha) was noted after 24-epibrassinolide application. No significant differences were founded among the ascorbic acid contents in each irrigation variant. A higher ascorbic acid content (by approximately 11.9 % in variant C compared with control A) is evident after application of 24-epibrassinolide in the variant with lower levels of irrigation – S. Contrarily, decrease ascorbic acid content is indicated in the optimal levels of irrigation – O (by approximately 16.8 % in variant C compared with control A). The influence of 24-epibrassinolide application on the nitrate content was not significant, but the trend of nitrates decrease in optimal irrigation conditions is evident.

AbstractCalcium (Ca) deficiency in cabbage plants induces oxidative damage, hampering growth and decreasing quality, however, it is hypothesized that silicon (Si) added to the nutrient solution may alleviate crop losses. Therefore, this study aims at evaluating whether silicon supplied in the nutrient solution reduces, in fact, the calcium deficiency effects on cabbage plants. In a greenhouse, cabbage plants were grown using nutrient solutions with Ca sufficiency and Ca deficiency (5 mM) without and with added silicon (2.5 mM), arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial in randomized blocks, with five replications. At 91 days after transplanting, the plants were harvested for biological evaluations. In the treatment without added Si, Ca deficiency promoted oxidative stress, low antioxidant content, decreased dry matter, and lower quality leaf. On the other hand, added Si attenuated Ca deficiency in cabbage by decreasing cell extravasation while increasing both ascorbic acid content and fresh and dry matter, providing firmer leaves due to diminished leaf water loss after harvesting. We highlighted the agronomic importance of Si added to the nutrient solution, especially in crops at risk of Ca deficiency.

Aim: To determine the impact of soil and foliar application of ZnSO4.7H2O at late stages of wheat as heading initiation (5% ear formation), 100% heading (complete ear formation) and heading initiation and 100% heading along with recommended dose of fertilizer on growth, yield and quality of zero till wheat. Methodology: The field experiment was conducted on zero till wheat. The treatments consisted of control (no Zn), soil application of 12.5, 25, 37.5, 50 kg ha-1 ZnSO4.7H2O and foliar application of 0.5% Zn as one spray at heading initiation (5% ear formation), one spray at 100% heading (complete ear formation) and two sprays at heading initiation and 100% heading with recommended dose of fertilizer. These treatments were evaluated in RBD with three replications. Results: Soil application of 50, 37.5 and 25 kg Zn ha-1 with two foliar sprays of 0.5% at heading initiation (5% ear formation) and 100% heading (complete ear formation) stages gave significantly higher average grain and straw yield and Zn concentration in grain than other treatments, including control. Interpretation: Enhanced application of Zn as soil and foliar application ameliorates soil Zn deficiency and increases protein content in grains, which might influence the quality and yield of zero tilled wheat. Chilling injury is the critical issue in sweet pepper fruit under low temperature storage. Present work was aimed to evaluate the effect of different concentration of methyl salicylate (MS) and L-arginine (Arg) on chilling injury and overall quality of sweet pepper fruits cv. ‘Winner’. The treatments were T1 = Control, T2 = 0.01mM MS, T3 = 0.05 mM MS, T4 = 1mM Arg, T5 = 1.5mM Arg and T6 = 0.01mM MS+1.5mM Arg. After respective treatment (for 10 min) fruits were kept at 5 ± 1 ◦C with 85-90 % RH for 28+2 days of storage. Physical, biochemical, and phytochemical parameters were studied at 7 days interval followed by two days of reconditioning at ambient conditions (25 ± 2 °C). On last removal (28+2days), sweet pepper fruits treated with combined MS and Arg treatment (T6) showed highly significant results in lower fruit weight loss (8.3%), maintained fruit colour (0.3 score) and firmness (13.4N), and reduced wrinkling (2 score), disease incidence (0.4 score), ion leakage (45.4%), alleviated chilling injury (1.7 score), retained total antioxidants (49.1%) and total phenolic content (74.4 mg 100 g-1 GAE FW) as compared to control. In addition, the ascorbic acid content was observed higher in all treatments in comparison with untreated control fruits. In conclusion, MS and Arg combine treatment improved storage potential with reduced chilling injury by maintaining higher total phenolic concentrations, ascorbic acid content and total antioxidants in terms of DPPH radical scavenging activities, and markedly maintained overall quality of sweet pepper under cold storage condition at 5 °C for 28 days.

The present investigation was conducted on different genotypes of aonla to assess the variability in physico- chemical properties of fruits. These plants were planted in the campus of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, U.P. The experiment was arranged in randomized block design with 12 treatments and 4 replications. The observations recorded during experiment showed that genotype 6 and 7 were found most superior, in terms of physico-chemical properties of fruits. The maximum pulp content (88.25%), pulp: stone ratio (8.24) and ascorbic acid content (679.25 mg/ 100g) was recorded in genotype 7. Whereas, highest TSS (12.18%), lowest acidity (1.80%) and maximum sugar (3.50%, 2.50% and 6.0% reducing, non-reducing and total sugar respectively) was found in genotype 6.

Abstract— Drying is known as a food preservation method which increases the food’s storage time by water reduction. Traditional drying consisted of open sun-drying, but different industrial dryers have been widely used in recent times. The new dryers consist of convective, infrared, ultrasound, freeze fluidized bed and freeze dryers. All of these dryers reduce the water content but under different mechanisms which leads to the end products with different qualities. In this study we aim to compare the difference in quality of kiwi fruit slices dried by three different dryers: 1. Convective tray dryer, 2. Microwave dryer and 3. Freeze dryer. The tray dryer experiments were conducted in two air temperatures of 60 and 80oC in the constant air velocity of 0.8 m/s. The microwave dryer operated in 3 output powers of 180, 270 and 360 W. The condenser temperature and pressure in the freeze dryer reduced to -50oC and 0.1 mbar, respectively. The operating conditions and time were regulated so that the moisture content of all dried samples reduced to nearly 10% in the wet basis. The three parameters of color change, ascorbic acid and antioxidant reduction were selected as the measuring criteria for the comparison of the product qualities. The experiments show that the freeze drying caused the minimum color change while the microwave drying in the maximum power of 360W caused the maximum amount of color change. The concentration of ascorbic acid was measured in the fresh fruits and dried samples by standard methods. The measurements proved that the ascorbic acid content of the freeze dried samples was 80% of the fresh fruits. The ascorbic acid content of other samples was much lower. The antioxidant activity of the dried samples and the fresh fruits was also measured by standard methods and the experimental data also showed that the freeze drying causes the minimum reduction in the antioxidant activity.
