The Panel will discuss the emerging issue of “knowledge mobilization”, problematizing it as articulated by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and engaging the audience in critical discussion of the potential benefits and harms of mandated knowledge mobilization requirements linked to unspecified notions of the “public good”.Ce panel discutera du thème émergent de la « mobilisation de la connaissance », problématisé tel qu’articulé par le Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada. This volume has been many years in the making. I first discovered examples of wives and husbands suing each other in Requests in 1989 while pursuing doctoral research. Pat Stretton and Jane Martindale independently suggested that the cases were worthy of publication, and Jane helped to bring this idea to the attention of the literary editors of the Royal Historical Society. I thank them both. Since then the editors of the Camden Series, Andrew Pettegree and Ian Archer, have provided support and shown unstinting patience for a project that has seasonally burst the banks of its projected deadlines. I am grateful to them, to the anonymous reviewer of the original proposal for pointing out the need to determine the frequency with which cases of this type came into Requests, and to the National Archives for permitting the cases to be reproduced. For financial support I wish to acknowledge the generosity of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, grant-giving bodies within Waikato University, Dalhousie University, and Saint Mary's University, and Lyndan Warner. In May 2010, with the support of funds from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada, a one-day workshop, entitled, “Social Sciences and Humanities Research as a Public Good: Identifying Research Prospects for Advancing Research Among Academic and Non-Academic Discourse Communities” was held in Montreal, Québec. The workshop brought together Canadian stakeholders involved in extending the reach of research (for the public good), including those involved in open access and knowledge mobilization, as well as organizations linked to the research community, and non-academic organizations with a clear mandate to include research in their activities or to extend the reach of research. This article presents a summary of the workshop presentations and a synthesis of the workshop discussions. The article also provides a discussion of the emergent issues arising from the workshop (such as the sustainability of open access journal publishing, the challenges of knowledge mobilization, and the limited media uptake of social sciences and humanities research), areas of inquiry that these issues open up (engaged scholarship and the engaged university, faculty reward structures, and public knowledge/knowledge mobilization as areas of scholarly inquiry), and collaborative next steps for stakeholders to take, to address concerns raised and to seize opportunities to advance shared interests.

AbstractIn this essay I scrutinize the non-anthropocentric discourses used by the social sciences and humanities narratives and critiques of the Anthropocene. Although not always predominant within the academic Anthropocene debate, such discursive strands remain politically and ethically inspiring and influential in that debate and for the public discourse concerning the epoch. I stress that these discourses inherit the hope for human progress that characterizes critical theory of the Frankfurt school, i.e. ‘critical hope’, a type of hope that renders the non-anthropocentric discourses self-contradictory. Even when they manage to escape the hold of critical hope, these discourses, I argue, suffer from ethical and political failings due to their inherent lack of focus on human–human relations and largely ahistorical nature. I conclude the essay by advocating an Anthropocene archaeology that remains critical of and learns from the ethical and political shortcomings of non-anthropocentric perspectives and making a related call for a slow archaeology of the Anthropocene.
