The paper presents the thesis that, in contrast to the conventional claim, capitalism is not characterized by virtualization, but by objectification and materialization. As materialized forms of industrial capitalism, warehouses are investigated with regard to their epistemic productivity. Central for the argument is the emergence of a new body of knowledge concerning commercial and economic sciences, which figures decisively in the practice of warehousing. After the worldwide economic crisis of 1920/21, stockpiling is called into question and a new era of warehouse sciences begins, the consequences of which are also addressed in the formulation of trade cycle theories.

Freedom of expression is not only a fundamental human right but also constitutes one of the essential elements in the establishment of a democratic society. No country can seriously profess to be a democracy, or pretend to be making efforts towards this, if its citizens cannot freely express their opinions. Recent moves to introduce freedom of expression in Cameroon have come at a particularly difficult time. Like most African countries, it is on the horns of a dilemma. As it struggles to cope with an ever deepening economic crisis, it has come under strong internal and external pressure to democratise. The winds of change which blew into Africa at the end of the 1980s, when former communist-block single-party régimes collapsed, appeared to herald the beginning of a new era. But as leaders are increasingly pressed by impatient citizens to unfreeze their political, social, and economic rights, tyrants and dictators posing as democrats seem to be determining the nature and guiding principles of the new order.

Summary: A large and powerful wave of optimism that the early nineties swept former socialist countries in terms of the final outcome of the transition is the end of the first decade of the 21st century removed even more powerful wave of pessimism. At the same time, the advent of the global economic crisis has confirmed that the socialist orientation have no chance, that capitalism is subject to permanent crisis, but it is doubtful its transience. The question used in addition to accelerating the systemic crisis in the global proficiency level is imposed, whether the former socialist, less developed countries become equal collaborators in the process of expanding multinational economic concepts, or will end up on the periphery, which would mean further stratification of the level of wealth, painful exploitation of scarce economic resources and the increasing backwardness in industrialization. Given that the problem of understanding the dynamics of industrial capitalism has not lost its importance even to the present day, the author in this paper aims to look for an answer to the question, whether and how to be reversed because the concept of development in the countries in transition towards more a world of equality in wealth, including the issue of re-industrialization.

Abstract The 2008 economic crisis signalled a new era for European and global politics and introduced a new ‘economic crisis discourse’, which has emerged as an attempt to explain, justify, criticize and interpret economic crisis. It has introduced new terms and constructed new meanings to political life. Media economic crisis discourse has been a decisive factor in peoples’ understanding of economic crisis. The paper studies the construction and media narratives of economic crisis discourse through an analysis of articles published by The Economist during the ‘peak years’ of the early Greek economic crisis (2009–2011). The analysis follows Laclau and Mouffe’s (1985) discourse theory and reveals the ‘nodal points’ of Greek crisis discourse as they are presented in the articles of The Economist. The paper underlines the importance of media discourse during crisis periods, in which information dissemination and news framing may crucially affect citizens, policies and societies in general.

This paper adds to the existing body of knowledge on green procurement approaches and sustainability theories for procurement management. It provides practical factors that can directly help the practitioners in implementing green procurement in construction projects. Green procurement is a new era in the construction industry of Pakistan. Thus, this paper aims to quantify the factors improving the adoption of green procurement in construction projects. A detailed literature review has been conducted to design and develop a conceptual model for green procurement. The study intricates the perception of 77 experienced practitioners involved in handling construction projects. The model was analyzed and validated with a partial least squares structural equation modeling technique with SmartPLS V3 software. The model results indicate that market factors and techniques play an essential role in enhancing green procurement acceptance and adoption. This study highlights the gap in achieving sustainability and controlling the environmental impacts caused by construction activities. It assists the construction practitioners to implement the green procurement for better environmental and sustainable performance.

For many years, medical teams working on telemedicine have made a strong effort to define the telemedicine Body of Knowledge (BoK), and generate compatible standards that allow delivering telemedicine with adequate medical quality. The authors expect, after the European Commission statement on the Prague 2009 declaration, a new era for telemedicine. The essential barriers, which have already been encountered, include Literacy, Standard connectivity and Quality control. In the present chapter, the authors will address the item of Literacy regarding the type of standards in each of the topics of the Telemedicine Body of Knowledge.

The current economic crisis has once again bought debates about capitalism and globalization to the forefront of the political agenda. Until very recently almost everyone seemed to be convinced that the world was at the dawn of a new era. Yet, the issue at the heart of globalization debates—whether political forces can dominate economic ones or must bow before them—is not new at all. I show that many of the great ideological and political battles of the last century were fought over precisely this ground, and argue that because we have forgotten or misunderstood these earlier debates our current discourse is thin and impoverished. To understand where we are and where we are going, we have to first step back and look closely at where we have been.

This study offers an interpretation of the most significant characteristics of Spanish cities in the post-Fordist capitalist era, as a mirror of the economic and social transformations that have led to them, differentiating: (i) the stage of economic expansion at the turn of the century; (ii) the stage of the economic crisis from 2008 onwards; and (iii) the uncertain times we face for the future. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to identify the economic, housing, and political factors conditioning this evolution according to the processes of capitalist accumulation, dispossession, and repossession, and how they shape the social and urban configuration of Spanish cities. A careful selection of urban and economic indicators, its mapping, as well as an in-depth bibliographical review lead to this commentary and make it possible to identify urban developments in Spain in the light of the economic and social transformations of post-industrial capitalism.

Since the mid-to-late 1990s, retail globalization has intensified, and a growing multidisciplinary literature profiles these dynamics. This chapter provides a snapshot of current levels of retail globalization, before briefly reviewing the literature on the drivers and dynamics of retail globalization from the late 1990s onwards. The analysis then advances current understandings in two ways. Firstly, the evidence on the impacts of globalization is reviewed to highlight that, far from being an inevitable process of rapid retail transnational corporation-led modernization, the outcomes have been highly variable and uneven, with profound variations across different national contexts. Secondly, focusing on the period since the global economic crisis of 2007–08, a new era of globalized distribution is characterized in which economic crisis and profound Internet-induced structural shifts have changed the dynamics of the process. To conclude, an economic geographical research agenda that builds upon these two dimensions is mapped out.Chapter keywords
