The present ecological investigation was carried out in the understorey of tropical moist deciduous forest of Udhayagiri fort hills, Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. A total number of 171 species were documented in the understory of the study area and among them 163 species were recognized as economically important.The secured value of ecological attribute, importance value index (IVI) indicates that the species like Tephrosia purpurea, Clerodendron infortunatum Acalypa indica, Aerva lanata, Asystasia gangetica, Belpharis maderaptensis, Cleome viscosa, Dodonia viscose, Glycosmis pentaphylla, Leucas aspera, Limnophila indica,Martynia annua, Oldenlandia umbellate, Pavetta indica, Phyllanthus amarus and Rhynchosia minima are well established in the study area. On the other hand, 55 plant species are considered to be ecologically weaker in the community. Hence priorities must be given to these species for natural regeneration and hence theirconservation as well.

The present investigation was carried out in a dry deciduous forest of Maruthamalai hills to know the changes in species composition according to altitude and ecology of economically important plants. A total number of 128 plant species were identified and 112 of them are recognized as economically important.Based on importance value index, the species like Acacia torta, Chloris barbata, Eragrostis viscosa, Erythroxylon monogynum Pterolobium indicum and Zizyphus oenoplia are ecologically well established plants in the study forest. On the other hand the spices such as Polygala Jacobi, Portulaca guadrifida, Ruellia patula,Sida rhomboidea, Waltheria indica, Calotropis gigantean, Solanum torvum, Acacia leucophloea, Acacia nilotica, Acacia trotitis, Agave Americana, Bambusa arundinacea, Cassia fistula, Chloroxylon swietenia, Peltophorum pterocarpum, Pithecellobium dulce, Pongamia pinnata, Prosopis juliflora, Samanea saman,Thespesia populnea, Canavalia mollis, Leptadenia reticulata, Rivea hypocrateriformis etc., are considered as ecologically weaker species in the community. Hence priorities must be given to these species so as to protect the genetic stock and species as well.

Mining activities in Jajang iron and manganese ore mines located in Keonjhar district of Odisha, India starting from mineral explorations to production and transport are causing environmental damage in many ways, which includes deforestation, loss of topsoil, accelerated soil erosion, migration of wildlife and avifauna, and addition of air pollutants and dust to the atmosphere. In connection to this, the current study was an attempt to regain the original ecological status of the degraded areas of Jajang iron and manganese ore mines caused due to mining by Rungta Mines Limited. To achieve this indigenous plant species for restoration were selected from mining forests and plantations. Species selection from mining forests was made through systematic phytosociological analysis that involved measurement of Importance Value Index (IVI), regeneration values of tree species and their economic uses. On the other hand, species selection from plantations was made based on their growth, productivity, economic uses and adaptation to terrain and soil types. Shrubs and grasses were selected based on their relative index and abundance, respectively. The top 15 tree and 16 grass species as well as all six shrub species were selected from mining forests and plantations were considered for restoration. The findings of the study may also aids in the faster restoration of degraded habitats with initial human facilitation as the soils of degraded areas were similar to that of the mining forest. To speed up the recovery process after-care and monitoring have also been suggested or advised.

Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) are the forest products except timber used for various purposes from which economic status of the country can be increased through green growth based economy. The study was conducted in Baghmara Buffer Zone Community Forest for the inventory, to document various uses and find out the preferred NTFPs potential for economic development of Community Forest User Groups. Stratified random sampling was applied in which 50 quadrats of size 25m×20m for trees, 100 subplots of 10m×10m for shrubs and 200 small subplots of 1m×1msize for herbs and climbers were taken. Parameters like density, frequency, abundance, importance value index, diversity index, evenness index and dominance index were calculated to find out the ecological status of NTFPs. Questionnaire survey of 100 households was done for studying different uses and interview with 10 key informants were carried out to identify 10 most preferred NTFPs. Altogether, 109 NTFPs were enumerated. Trewia nudiflora, Clerodendrum viscosum, Imperatacylindrica and Mikania micrantha were dominant tree, shrub, and herb and climber species accordingto Importance value Index (IVI). There is significant difference in density of trees, shrubs, herbs and climbers between different sample quadrats i.e. p value < 0.05. NTFPs found were used for medicine, fodder, food, veterinary, dying, handicrafts, crop management, ornamental, insecticides, construction, beverage, piscicidal, religious and miscellaneous purposes. Calamus tenuis, Curcumalonga, Piper longum, Phyllanthus emblica, Asparagus racemosus, Terminalia bellirica, Terminaliachebula, Bauhinia variegata, Tinospora sinensis and Dryopteris cochleata were ten most preferred Non Timber Forest Products from matrix preference ranking.

The present study was conducted in the Kuwana forest of Gonda forest division in Uttar Pradesh to explore its ecological inventories. Random stratified sampling was adopted to collect the basic information like frequency, density and abundance for the calculation of importance value index (IVI). On the basis of principal component analysis (PCA) plot, three forest communities were identified and named as, Syzygium Lowland Forest (SLF), Shorea Miscellaneous Forest (SMF) and Mallotus Miscellaneous Forest (MMF). MMF community allowed the maximum 39 while SLF minimum 18 tree species growing in it. Conversely, SMF community showed higher heterogeneous tree diversity validated by lower Dominance index (0.088) and higher Simpson index (0.912). The values of these two indices were found very low in comparison with their range for tropical forests of India. On the otherhand the diversity indices (Shannon & Fisher alpha) was calculated as maximum (2.797 & 11.960 respectively) for MMF community, which indicates the existence of better tree diversity in this forest community. The higher values of Evenness & Equitability indices (0.646 & 0.859 respectively) for SMF community showed the more evenly distribution of tree species in this community.

Regeneration patterns of species population can address climate change by adaptive evolution or by migrating association to survive in their favorable climate and finally decided to particular forest future. In this paper we examined the status of regeneration potential of tree species in tropical moist deciduous forest at Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, Northern India. To investigate tree, sapling and seedling population distribution, we examine regeneration status in 145 random plots in study area. Total 74 plant species of 60 genera belonging to 32 families out of which 71 species of trees, 56 of seedlings and 60 of saplings were found in the forest. On the basis of importance value index Mallotus philippensis, Tectona grandis, Shorea robusta, Syzygium cumini and Bombax ceiba have been found as dominant species in the study area. As far as the regeneration status is concerned, the maximum tree species (64%) have been found in good regeneration category. Significant variations in species richness and population density, between three life form (i. e. tree, sapling and seedling) have been found. In which only three new tree species Prosopis juliflora, Psidium guajava and Morus alba were added in sapling and seedling stage. It is major ecological concern that about 19 % economically important plant species like Madhuca longifolia, Terminalia elliptica, Buchanania cochinchinensis, some Ficus species etc. have been found in poor regeneration phage, whereas about 7% species found in no regeneration categories. Two community forests, Amaldapani and Juphal from Dolpa district, were selected for a study of quantitative analysis of tree flora. A total of 419 individual trees representing 16 species, 16 genera and 11 families were recorded. Total stand density and basal area were, respectively, 2100 trees ha-1 and 90 m2ha-1 in Amaldapani and 2090 tree ha-1 and 152 m2ha-1 in Juphal. Of the families, the Pinaceae was the most diverse, with 28 individuals representing five species and five genera, followed by the Rosaceae with three individuals representing two species and two genera. Pinus wallichiana, Abies spectabilis, Quercus semecarpifolia and Cedrus deodara had the highest importance value index and could therefore be considered the dominant species. Since the study area was diverse in tree population of conifers and deciduous forest tree species, it is essential to carry out further studies in order to establish conservation measures that will enhance local biodiversity. The research conducted in Panchase area of Kaski district aimed to assess the ecological and social status of Paris polyphylla with its antibacterial activity and ethno-medicinal uses of available plant species. P. polyphylla shows relative density, frequency and coverage of 5.26/ha, 6.29% and 3.05%, respectively. Similarly, the importance value index of this plant was found to be 14.6. Rhizomes of this plant in the study site are mainly applied to wounds for rapid healing and antidote to the bite for poisonous insects and snakebite, fever, headache and stomach problem of both human and domestic animals. Different extracts of aerial parts of the plant are active against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aureginosa, Escherchia coli and Salmonella flexinerai whereas, rhizome extract was active only against S. aureus. Petroleum ether extract from the rhizomes of P. polyphylla was most effective against S. aereus with minimal inhibitory concentration value of 62.5 mg/ml. A quantitative inventory was conducted in two distinctive tropical deciduous forests at Suruli falls forest of southern Western Ghats.  Two one-hectare plots were established and all trees >10cm DBH measured. Species richness, density, family importance value (FIV) and importance value index (IVI) were calculated and the results varied among the two sites. A total of 777 stems and 52 species were documented in both the sites and moist deciduous forest (MDF) had maximum number species richness and density than dry deciduous forest (DDF). The basal area was higher in MDF (502 stems/ha and 16.52 m2/ha) than in DDF (275 stems/ha and 7.23 m2/ha). However, Shannon and evenness indices showed a negative trend (DDF- 2.62, 0.41 and MDF- 2.37, 0.27). Diameter class-wise distribution of trees showed reverse ‘J shaped’ curve in both the forest types. Pterocarpus marsupium was the mono-dominant species holding one-third of the IVI (113), 27% of the stem density and 30% of the total basal area. DDF site is suspected to recurrence of annual fire. Anogeissus latifolia and Strychnos potatorum were the fire-tolerant species only found in lower diameter class. The maximum species shared contiguous distribution in the deciduous forests. The observed variations in the tree community between the two deciduous forest sites are possibly due to variations in altitude, rainfall, temperature, past disturbance, fire and edaphic characteristics.

Tropical forests are complex systems with heterogenous community assemblages often threatened under anthropogenic disturbances and grazing. We studied the change in plant community composition and structure under a disturbance gradient in the tropical dry deciduous forest of the corridor area between Nagzira-Navegaon Tiger reserve of central India. We tested the hypothesis that the plant community will change along the proximity gradient from the human settlement depending on the anthropogenic stress. We sampled 183 nested quadrat plots to collect data on species abundance and various disturbance parameters. Density, diversity, and Importance Value Index were calculated and multivariate analysis was done to assess the changes in species assemblage along the disturbance gradients. We found 76% overall dissimilarity between the plant communities in the three distance classes perpetrated by the difference in mean abundance of species like Tectona grandis, Terminalia sp, and Largerstroemia parviflora. The anthropogenic factors influence the density and diversity of tree species and regeneration classes. We found the abundance of regeneration class increased along the distance from the villages. The study intensifies the need for proper management and conservative approach to preserve the diversity of the forest patches for its structural and functional contiguity as a corridor in the central India's highly susceptible and intricate corridor framework.

Forests are the main repository of biodiversity and play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of nature. The status of species diversity reflects the health of the ecosystem. Therefore, the information on variation in the flora, for example,  species composition, diversity and the basal area within any ecosystem like the forest of Mizoram University campus, Tanhril village, Aizawl would be important in understanding the forest wealth of the campus. Keeping in view, the study was analyzed the composition and diversity of  Mizoram University campus by laying 16 (10 m ×10 m) quadrats at random locations during 2015-2016. A total of 35 tree species belonging to 30 genera and 22 families were recorded in the forest communities of University Campus. Aporusa octandra was the most dominant tree species with maximum 31.50 importance value index (IVI), 3.29 Shannon diversity index (H0) and 6972 Simpson’s index (D) followed by Castanopsis tribuloides (28 IVI, 0.22 H0 and 5256 D) and least dominant species recorded were: Albizia odoratissima, Anogeissus acuminate, Lithocarpus elegans, Oroxylum indicum. This study suggests that the forest patches are recovering after the establishment of the University because of adequate protection which was degraded in the past by the villager for collecting the trees for firewood, edible wild food and selecting the mature trees for felling. Therefore, further studies on regeneration potential of tree species would be crucial for the conservation of ecologically important species and to assess rates of their recovery following the disturbance.
