The present study was aimed at documenting species composition, utilization and conservation of plant species growing in home gardens of 10 residential areas of Coimbatore city, India. Household interviews and home garden surveys revealed that all the 109 plant species included in 60 families included have someeconomic uses or with ornamental significance. Higher number of species was herbs followed by shrubs, trees, climbers, succulent herbs, vines and sub-shrubs. The families viz., Asteraceae, Apocynaceae and Acanthaceae contributed higher number of plant species than the other families to the home gardens. Thespecies namely, Celosia cristata, Chrysanthemum odoratum and Ocimum basilicum have registered 50% frequency among the home gardens sampled which indicates that these species have distributed and maintained in comparatively higher number of home gardens. The home garden species are mainly under thecategories of vegetables, fruits, ornamentals, economic important species and medicinal. These results further report revealed that homegardens satisfy various household needs like food, ornamentals, medicines, building material, religious and ceremonial uses.

Home garden can serve as an important source of both food and cash income for vulnerable households. The objectives of this study were to documenting the flora of the home gardens, obtaining their frequency and to categorize the plants into medicinal/other economically important species according to their utility value in 10 different residential areas of Coimbatore city. The home garden surveys revealed that totally 90 species, were enlisted in the sampled areas and of them the higher species richness of 26 were found in Vadavalli residential area. Overall 47 families were recorded, among them Acanthaceae and Apocyanaceae were more dominant families in the study sites. In the species content 72 were recognized as medicinally important and 18 as ornamental. It was further known that the residents of middle class earned sizeable income through vegetables in addition to fulfilling their day to day need while the residents of upper class highly preferring ornamental species. Few species like Saraca indica, the endemics are well protected by cultivation in homegardens. Thus the present study presumes that home gardens satisfy various household needs and conserve medicinally valuable species.

Biodiversitas 21: 3670-3675. Home gardens have a significant potential to improve food security and offer a contribution to household income for communities in rural areas. The aim of this study was to assess the diversity of fruit plant species in the home gardens and their contribution to the livelihood of rural communities in Tenggulun Sub-district, Indonesia. The study was conducted in three villages of Tenggulun Sub-district, Aceh Tamiang District, namely Tenggulun, Selamat, and Simpang Kiri. Extensive field surveys, plant collections, and interviews with local communities were conducted, involving 350 households, using random sampling methods. A total of 39 fruit plant species consisting of 23 genera and 17 families were recorded at the three villages. Sixteen species, i.e., A. muricata, A. jiringa, Artocarpus integer, Averrhoa bilimbi, Baccaurea motleyana, Carica papaya, Citrus aurantifolia, Citrus hystrix, Garcinia mangostana, Mangifera indica, Manilkara zapota, Musa x paradisiaca, Nephelium lappaceum, Psidium guajava, Spondias pinnata, and Syzygium aqueum were the most frequently recorded in all of the villages. In addition to being used as food, the fruit plants in the study area were also used as medicines, fodder, fuelwood, and household items. The fruit plant species have a significant role in supporting household livelihoods to improve food security and potentially offer a household income for the rural community in the study area.

Clearing of natural ecosystems and land degradation due to unsustainable agricultural practices are becoming threats to the sustainability and productivity of agricultural systems in Burie town administrative, Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia. The aim of this paper is therefore to assess the fruit tree species diversity in home garden agro-forestry and their role for supporting local people’s livelihoods in Burie town administration. Cultivated plants of 72 home gardens were surveyed and critical information were collected through questioner and focus group discussion from 12 households. Fruit tree species diversity (expressed in species richness and evenness) in home gardens in the study sites was determined using the Shannon-Weiner Index. The study basically considers the human consumption fruit trees species. A total of 18 fruit tree species represented by 9-genera and 7-families were recorded in home garden agro-forestry within the three wealth status (poor, medium, and rich) of the selected respondents commonly. From all wealth categories, the highest Shannon diversity index was recorded in rich and the lowest was in poor class category. Similarly, the highest species evenness was recorded in rich wealth category. However, there was no significant difference among rich and medium wealth categories for species richness. The study also revealed that age, land hold size, education status is the cause for species diversity in addition to the wealth status in the study area. Older respondents had significantly higher species richness and diversity than youngsters. It has been also found that almost all (100%) of the sampled households harvest and use at least four types of home garden products for various purposes. Lacks of management practices were the factors which puts the species diversity in question in the study area.

Since time immemorial, the natives were growing and maintaining plant diversity in the vicinity of dwelling places which is popularly known as Home Garden. The present study was conducted to assess role of home garden for in-situ conservation of plant diversity in Dhari Block, district Nainital, Uttarakhand with the major aim of understanding the plant diversity available especially with respect to the home gardens and role of vice-versa in their day to day life. With the help of questionnaire and survey, the information was collected from six villages i.e., Chaukuta, Dhanachuli, Gajar, Kasiyalekh, Podiyal and Pokhrar. Information regarding the occurrence of plant species, their local names, parts used and formulation through interviews and discussions held with elderly persons of rural communities were recorded. The study documented 93 plant species belonging to 79 genera and 51 families ranging from forestry to horticulture and agriculture including ethno-medicinal plants as grown in the home gardens and these plant species were used for multiple purposes i.e., Cereals, Fire woods, Fodders, Fruits, Leafy vegetables, Ornamentals, Pseudo-cereals, Spices, Vegetables and other cultural significance. These observations indicated that home garden play a important role in food security and in-situ conservation of agri-horticultural plants.

Understanding the complex diversity of species and their potential uses in traditional agroforestry systems is crucial for enhancing the productivity of tropical systems and ensuring the sustainability of the natural resource base. The aim of this study is the evaluation of the role of home gardens and parklands, which are prominent tropical agroforestry systems, in the conservation and management of biodiversity. Our study quantified and compared the diversity of woody and herbaceous perennial species and their uses in traditional home gardens and parkland agroforestry systems under a sub-humid climate in western Ethiopia. A sociological survey of 130 household respondents revealed 14 different uses of the species, mostly for shade, fuelwood, food, and as traditional medicine. Vegetation inventory showed that the Fisher’s α diversity index and species richness were significantly higher in home gardens (Fisher’s α = 5.28 ± 0.35) than in parklands (Fisher’s α = 1.62 ± 0.18). Both systems were significantly different in species composition (Sørenson’s similarity coefficient = 35%). The differences occurred primarily because of the high intensity of management and the cultivation of exotic tree species in the home gardens, whereas parklands harbored mostly native flora owing to the deliberate retention and assisted regeneration by farmers. In home gardens, Mangifera indica L. was the most important woody species, followed by Cordia africana Lam. and Coffea arabica L. On the other hand, Syzygium guineense Wall. was the most important species in parklands, followed by C. africana and M. indica. The species diversity of agroforestry practices must be further augmented with both indigenous and useful, non-invasive exotic woody and herbaceous species, particularly in parklands that showed lower than expected species diversity compared to home-gardens.

The Tawang Selubang Forest, located in the Other Use Area (APL) is determined by the regional government of Sintang Regency, West Kalimantan as the Hutan Tutupan (forest cover). This forest has great benefits for the community, one of which is as a source of medicinal plants. This research aims to identify the potential species of medicinal plants in the Tawang Selubang Forest Cover. Inventory of potential medicinal plants is done by making a square (0.5 Ha) cluster design (100 mx 100 m) in which there are 5 circular plots. Each plot contained several circular subplots that functioned for observation of seedling level (r= 1 m), stake (r= 2 m), pole (r= 5 m) and tree (r= 17.8 m). The number of plant species found in the Tawang Selawang Forest Cover were 47 species and 27 species were medicinal plants. Some species of medicinal plants that have a high density and important value index are Xanthophyllum amoenum Chadat, Antidesma montanum Blume, Nephelium maingayi Hiern, Palaquium gutta (Hook.) Baill and Syzygium lineatum (DC.) Merr. & J.Parn .

The home garden is a unique human-nature interspace that accommodates a diverse spectrum of plant species and provides multiple services to households. One of the most important roles of home gardens is to shelter the agricultural plant diversity that provides for diverse and healthy nutrition, especially in rural communities. While tropical home gardens have received wide recognition due to their provisional function for the local communities, temperate and especially European home gardens have been discussed less frequently as a source of subsistence. The main objectives of the current study were to document plant species grown in Bulgarian rural home gardens and to explore related local knowledge and cultural practices that influence food plant diversity, its selection and preservation. Field work was focused on settlements situated in eight provinces in South and North-West Bulgaria. Participants representing 65 home gardens were approached through semi-structured interviews. Home gardens were found to harbor 145 cultivated and semi-cultivated plant taxa, used as food, medicinal and aromatic plants and as animal fodder. Members of the Rosaceae family were most numerous. The largest part of the garden area was occupied by vegetable crops of Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae. In 63.1% of the studied households, the food growing area comprised more than 2/3 of the total size of the garden. Most preferred crops reflected the social and cultural importance of food self-provisioning, especially in the rural areas. The provisional role of the home gardens in regard to preparation of traditional foods and the driving forces for seed saving are discussed.

A pot study was conducted to investigate whether differences in the amounts of Zn and Cd taken up by a number of plant species (canola, capeweed, subterranean clover, lettuce, swiss chard, ryegrass, and wheat) growing in a single soil could be explained as the result of plants having access to different soil pools of Zn and Cd. Prior to potting, the soil was spiked with carrier-free 65Zn and 109Cd. Total shoot concentrations of both Zn and Cd varied greatly across the plant species studied. The concentration of Cd in the shoots ranged from 0·075 mg/kg in wheat cv. RAC to 2·27 mg/kg in capeweed, while the concentration of Zn in the shoots ranged from 33 mg/kg in wheat cv. RAC to 259 mg/kg in swiss chard. However, the specific activity of Zn in the shoots was found to be the same in all cases. Hence the experiments showed that all plant species were accessing the same pool of Zn in the soil, despite differences in the total amounts of Zn taken up. In contrast, the specific activity of Cd in canola was found to be nearly double the specific activity of Cd in the other plants, suggesting that canola was unable to access a pool of soil Cd that was available for uptake by the other species. The percentage of total soil Zn and Cd that was in bioavailable pools was calculated to be approximately 12 and 36 (or 20% for canola), respectively, implying that significant percentages of these metals exist in non plant available forms in this soil.

This work proposes a new method for the assessment of species richness, diversity, and homotony in related vegetation relevés of grass swards. Hypothetical vegetation relevés with identical species number but differing constancy were generated to compare the techniques describing the species variety and diversity. By calculating these theoretical values in combination with data from real swards of Alopecuretum meadows, it has been shown that the determination of the constancy of particular species is essential for the evaluation of species diversity of grass swards. The relationship between the share of different combinations of vegetation relevés in the whole sample and corresponding total number of plant species were expressed by generating regression equations and the mid values of these curves were worked out and evaluated for individual sets of relevés; it was then possible to create homotony/heterotony indices for these sets. The indices of heterotony can be used, e.g., for expressing biotope diversity within a set of vegetation relevés from different stands.

Quezon Protected Landscape (QPL) is a tropical rainforest situated at the southern Sierra Madre mountain range. However, it is subjected to anthropogenic pressure that poses threats to its flora and fauna. This study was conducted to describe the plant diversity, assess their ecological and conservation status, and to identify current anthropogenic threats in various vegetation types in QPL. Vegetation assessment was done using quadrat method established at different land use types wherein ninety 10×10 m nested plots were used for trees, 5×5 m subplots were used for herbs and shrubs, and 1×1 m subplots were used for grasses. The study documented a total of 328 species belonging to 84 families and 208 genera with 2,737 individuals. Species diversity is high as revealed by the values obtained from species diversity (H’) and species evenness (J’) indexes. Out of 172 tree species identified, the most important species are: Parashorea malaanonan (Blanco) Merr. in the regenerating and lowland evergreen dipterocarp forest; Diospyros pyrrhocarpa Miq. in the karst forest; Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit in the secondary forest; and Cocos nucifera L. in the agroforest. Assessment of ecological status showed that out of 328 species, 213 (64.94%) are native, wherein 65 (19.8%) are endemic, and 115 (35.06%) are introduced. Forty-five species (13.72%) are threatened in which 25 of those are endemic in the Philippines. Overall, QPL has a wide array of plant species and threats such as the illegal extraction of natural resources, encroachment, cleanliness and presence of invasive alien species. So, it is recommended that protection and awareness campaign should be done for conservation and sustainability.
