This study aims at describing social practices and explaining social agents’thought and belief in the discourse of Abdul QodirJaelani (AQJ). It uses a descriptivequalitative approach in the form of discourse analysis, by utilizing the CriticalDiscourse Analysis (CDA) and appraisal devices as instruments. The data obtainedwere 10 written newspaper textsof AQJ case taken from the Jakarta Post onlinenewspaper. The units of analyses of the study are the whole texts in general and theclauses in particular. The results show that in situational level, the news productionsare based on the continuity of situational development of AQJ case; in institutionallevel, the economic media of the Jakarta Post is more stable and the politics mediainvolves the journalists’ ideology stance in which represent readers’ ideology; in thesocial level, the news attempt to attract readers’ critical thinking of the AQJ case.Moreover, the social agents employed all three resources of attitudes that tend to benegative in terms of judgment, appreciation and affect. In sum, this study shows thatmeanings were realized through the representation of social agents and social events,afterwards the evaluation of kinds of attitudes were also negotiated in the news texts ofAQJ.Keywords : appraisal system, discourse analysis, news articles, social agents, socialpractice

Abstract Musical discourse analysis is an interdisciplinary study which is incomplete without consideration of relevant social, linguistic, psychological, visual, gestural, ritual, technical, historical and musicological aspects. In the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis, musical discourse can be interpreted as social practice: it refers to specific means of representing specific aspects of the social (musical) sphere. The article introduces a general view of contemporary musical discourse, and analyses genres from the point of ‘semiosis’, ‘social agents’, ‘social relations’, ‘social context’, and ‘text’. These components of musical discourse analysis, in their various aspects and combinations, should help thoroughly examine the context of contemporary musical art, and determine linguistic features specific to different genres of musical discourse.

Abstract The research articles(RAs) as the dominant genre of academic writing can be accounted as the sites of reproduction of unequal power relations and dominance. Through critical discourse analysis of epistemological and ontological underpinnings and subsequently methodological aims and values of positivist paradigm as social structures, this article aims to foreground power and ideology stricken latent aspects of empiricist RAs. Research as a social practice mediates between the social structures and the RAs as social events. Textual analysis of practical arguments presented mostly in the pedagogical implications part revealed that the scientific world views manifest themselves as the premises of these arguments. The premises can provide reasons for actions (Searle’s,2010, social ontology theory). The reasons can signify the empiricist interests as the global concerns. They exclude the rival paradigms or ways of understanding the world. These world views maintain the dominance of Western societies on global academic and social discourses.

This work represents the development of two lines of interest, one in the study of social practices of remembering and the other concerning issues of identity in the care of people with profound learning difficulties. We examine of the way life story work is used as a resource in providing for continuities in the experience of people with profound learning difficulties when moved from hospital to community based care. Our concern is the way carers attend to issues of identity in their relationships with people who are unable to speak on their own behalf. We discuss how identities are accomplished as part of the social practice of remembering in the construction of life story books designed to resource continuities of identities across changes in the provision of care. Identities are not examined in terms of some subjective representation of coherence across time and space. We examine the way social organisation of remembering in life story work makes visible identities in terms of continuities of participation in the social practices that make up the conditions of living of the recipients of care and the working practices of those who provide it.

Based on hints gathered in documents and observations, the aim of this work is to reveal emancipatory meanings present, though invisible or not fully realized in regulatory processes, as well as to understand knowledge and ideas impregnated in the daily practices of social agents. In order to valorize edge knowledge and social practices, this work is grounded on Boaventura de Sousa Santos, especially on his formulation of a two-fold Sociology: one related to the social experiences that have not been recognized yet as valuable and the second related to the expansion of possible social experiences. The movement corresponds to the construction of an archeology of already developed social experiences, though not visible or recognized by the existing theoretical frameworks, so as to reveal both kinds of experiences: the recognized ones and the possible ones. By means of experiences developed by ordinary people, the aim is to get to know and socialize experiences conducted in boundary scientific works in several social areas to make it possible to gather hints to the production of alternatives to hegemonic ideas and to the maintenance of traditions abandoned by modern sciences. Based on what can be called «Sociology of absences», experiences can be valued, publicized and used to convey hidden meanings, to exploit possible ways to deal with posed questions and to legitimate new forms of thinking. Based on these assumptions, we present a reflection on an experience in the social field, regarding possible conflicts and dialogues between forms of knowledge. In this case, we treat the pedagogical experience with video and TV programs, developed by teachers and experts on education and communication in the official schools of Rio de JaneiroCity, being the latter put in charge of helping the former in their pedagogical practices. By means of the hints gathered, sometimes taken as unimportant, it was possible to identify in the teachers´ speeches and actions, particular ways to work works with video and TV programs that, far from being characterized by lack of knowledge, were plenty of alternative logical thinking and could lead to the production of creative and emancipatory practices. In short, what could be seen as meaningless could also be regarded as emerging knowledge. Com base em indícios resgatados em documentos e observações, o objetivo deste trabalho é revelar sentidos emancipatórios existentes, mas invisíveis ou ignorados, em meio aos processos regulatórios, bem como compreender os saberes, as idéias que impregnam as práticas cotidianas desenvolvidas pelos sujeitos sociais. No sentido de valorizar os conhecimentos e as práticas sociais marginais, fundamentamo-nos em Boaventura de Sousa Santos, que propõe a sociologia das ausências e a sociologia das emergências. Na primeira, o movimento é o de expandir o domínio das experiências sociais já disponíveis, contudo negligenciadas, enquanto na segunda é o de expandir o domínio das experiências sociais possíveis. Propõe uma arqueologia das experiências já existentes, mas invisíveis, no intuito de revelar as experiências do mundo, tanto as disponíveis como as possíveis. Trata-se de revelar e difundir experiências vividas por pessoas comuns, de conhecer e propalar experiências construídas em trabalhos científicos marginalizados e de encontrar e anunciar conhecimentos/experiências nos mais diversos campos sociais, no movimento de constituição de alternativas à lógica hegemônica e, ao mesmo tempo, de manutenção de tradições marginalizadas e desperdiçadas pela ciência moderna. Por meio da sociologia das ausências, estas experiências são resgatadas e divulgadas para se tornarem possíveis encaminhamentos das questões enfrentadas, para se constituírem em outros sentidos para a transformação social ou, ainda, para propor novas formas de pensar. Apresentamos uma reflexão sobre experiência no campo social de conhecimentos que, segundo Santos, trata de conflitos e diálogos possíveis entre diferentes formas de conhecimento. No caso deste trabalho, a tentativa é a de resgatar a experiência pedagógica no uso de vídeos de alguns dos professores da Rede Municipal de Educação do Rio de Janeiro, ignorada pelos próprios professores e por especialistas nas áreas de educação e comunicação, sendo os últimos produtores de vídeos educativos para auxiliar a prática pedagógica dos primeiros. O exercício de ler indícios e pistas, muitas vezes insignificantes, mas reveladores, presentes nas falas e ações dos professores, indicou que, longe de ausência de saber, os modos peculiares de utilização de TV e vídeo revelam outros saberes e outra(s) lógica(s). O que pode sugerir ação isolada e desprovida de conhecimento, também pode ser compreendido como pista para uma prática e um saber criativo e emancipatório.

Paradigma atau pemikiran kritis memandang bahwa individu tidaklah dianggap sebagai subjek yang netral yang bisa menafsirkan secara bebas sesuai dengan pikirannya karena dipengaruhi oleh kekuatan sosial yang ada di masyarakat. Bahasa/teks merupakan representasi yang berperan dalam membentuk subjek tertentu, tema wacana tertentu, maupun strategi di dalamnya. Reproduksi realitas dalam suatu teks pada dasarnya sangat dipengaruhi oleh bahasa, simbolisasi pemaknaan dan politik penandaan. Praksis sosial memerlukan makna dan makna tidak bisa lepas dari bahasa. Makna mempertajam serta memengaruhi segala sesuatu yang dilakukan seseorang, maka semua praktik sosial tidak bisa lepas dari dimensi wacana.Analisis wacana termasuk dalam kategori paradigma kritis.Oleh karenanya, istilah analisis wacana kritis hadir untuk membedah kuasa-kuasa dalam teks. Analisis wacana kritis digunakan untuk membongkar kuasa yang ada dalam setiap proses bahasa, batasan yang diperkenankan menjadi wacana, perspektif yang digunakan, dan topik yang dibicarakan, yang dalam berupa teks berita. Analisis wacana kritis yang digunakan mengacu pada model Van Dijk. Kata kunci: kritis, analisis wacana kritis, teks beritaABSTRACTParadigm or critical view considers that an individual is not considered a neutral subject who can interpret freely according to his mind because it is influenced by the social forces that exist in society. Language/text is a representation that plays a role in shaping a particular subject, a particular theme of discourse, as well as a strategy in it. Reproduction of reality in a text is basically strongly influenced by language, meaning symbolization, and political tagging. Social praxis requires meaning and meaning cannot be separated from language. Meaning can strengthen and influence everything that a person does, all social practices cannot be separated from the dimensions of discourse. Discourse analysis belongs to the category of critical paradigms. Therefore, the term critical discourse analysis is present to analyze the powers in the text. Critical discourse analysis is used to uncover the power that exists in each language process, the boundaries that are allowed to become discourse, the perspectives used, and the topics discussed, which in this study are news texts. Critical discourse analysis used refers to the Van Dijk model.

Originating from the notion of space and language as formulated by Gunn (2002) and based on the theoretical foundation of Critical Discourse Analysis, as proposed by Norman Fairclough (2003), this paper deals with the investigation of identity (re)construction for teachers in special education classrooms in Brazil. Elements from Fairclough's theory are used to approach the category of space in language praxis for the purpose of investigating, specifically, how people involved in the social events of special education represent this social space and how issues of power and ideology are perceived in the discourse (s) of this education assistant model.

It is difficult to understand students’ social practices from artifacts of anonymous online postings. The analysis of text genres and discursive types of online postings has potential for enhancing teaching and learning experiences of students. This article focuses on analysis of students’ anonymous online postings using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The article argues that social practices reproduce during online interaction and artifacts embody such reproduction. A study involving more than 300 commerce students at a higher education institution (HEI) using a special purpose anonymous online consultation tool, the Dynamic Frequently Asked Questions (DFAQ), and social practices embodied in the artifacts is analyzed using CDA. The analysis used the three dimensions of CDA—description (text genres), interpretation (discursive type), and explanation (social practice)—and insights into students’ social practices were inferred. The article concludes that CDA of anonymous postings provided insight into social practices of students and, in particular, highlighted the tension between perceptions of inflexibility of traditional teaching practices and student demands for flexible learning. Finally, CDA, as described in this article, could be useful in analyzing e-mail communications, short message service (SMS) interactions, Web blogs, and podcasts.

Women are the main driving force of society along side men. High personality of women will  bring into the world strong generation and community in facing challenges of life. If they are weak, the community also will become strengthless. Muslims, regardless being  majorities in Moslem countries or minorities in non Moslem countries should revive excellency as early generations of Islam that bring forth advanced world civilization for several centuries. The stories of the early generations had been written by many authors such as Mohammad Rashid Rida’s writing about the wives of the Prophet, as well as contained in history books known as “sirah”, autobiographies as well as other forms of writings, translations of thousands of titles in the subject but not studied analytically. Thus analyzing the social processes that apply at that time through the content of Prophetic hadith and discourse analysis texts as proposed by social language analysts, prevail to expose the excellency and sustainability of  women implied in the events as had been narrated by themselves and others. Methodology of this study is based on analysis of the content of hadith and Fairclough (2003, 1992, 1989)’s concept of discourse analysis through the dimension of intertextuality. Several prophetic Hadith are selected, analyzed and being related to social practice to formulate the principles that should serve as a model to modern  women especially by Moslim women. This is because the development of human capital especially female identity is the backbone of the nation’s development.


We use language for different purposes that are mostly related to the social practices in different contexts and perspectives. Discourse analysis is one of the disciplines which examines the use of language from different perspectives to reach a possible understanding of the discourse. This paper is also an attempt to analyze language used in a particular context and perspective to understand and expose some constructed realities. The objective of this study is to examine the Canadian PM’s moral and ideological standpoint, his commitment to show solidarity with the grieved community, his determination to eradicate terrorism and his linguistic characterization of terrorism that he confirmed in his speech in the House of Common on March 18, 2019 after the Christchurch Mosque Shootings in New Zealand. The analysis is based on Fairclough’s conceptions in CDA. It claims that ideologies and texts are interrelated, and it is not possible to break this link between ideologies and texts because the texts can be interpreted in maximum possible ways. This study analyzes the components of ideology and persuasion used in Justin Trudeau’s speech to reveal his commitment and persuasive strategies against terrorism, and it gives new hopes to the targeted communities worldwide as well as the general public. He tried to ensure the public that they are not alone because the world leaders and the heads of the states are unconditionally united to eradicate worldwide terrorism.


The article actualizes the potential of discourse analysis as a way of studying the social field, social metamorphosis and the process of space production. In this connection, the socio-philosophical theories of the followers of historical materialism on the one hand, and the poststructuralist discourse theory on the other, are considered. The dialectic correlation of discursive and material social practices is investigated. Based on the results obtained, it is concluded that discourse analysis has a great heuristic potential as one of the social-critical methods.
