Mental Health affects our ability to make the most of the opportunities that come our way and play a full part amongst our family, workplace, community and friends. It’s also closely linked with our physical health. Whether we call it well-being, emotional welfare or mental health, it’s key to living a fulfilling life. The purpose of the study was to compare the Mental Health status among Individual Athletes, Team Athletes and Non-Athletes. Purposive sampling was done in which subjects for the present study were 148 male students of Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari studying various courses in the academic year 2013-14. The Mental Health Scale prepared by Dr .D .J.Bhatt and Ms. Geeta R. Geedawas used as a tool for the present study. The scores arrived from 45 Individual Athletes, 51 Team Athletes and 52 Non-Athletes were compared by applying the ‘F’ test. The resultant value 7.566 was found significant at the predetermined confidence level of 0.5. Further, this study revealed significant difference between the mean score of Team Athlete & Non-Athlete, whereas there was no significant difference between the Individual Athlete & Team Athlete and that of Individual Athlete & Non-Athlete. Thus it was evident that Mental Health of Team Athlete was significantly better in comparison to Individual Athlete and Non-Athlete. This clearly shows that those who participate in team games have more chances to stay mentally fit as they involve themselves in preparing mentally for various team competitions. Mental Health is considered to be one of the important components of daily life style. This is certainly an important factor for all of us to live better and longer life. Thus, we all should daily participate in physical activity to stay physically and mentally fit.

The outbreak of COVID-19 and the changes to normal societal function and in particular quarantine has increased mental distress in many nations. A survey of 22,112 COVID-19-negative quarantined participants in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (age: 18–40 years, 42.6%; 40–60 years, 53.3%; over 60 years, 4.1%; mass, 78.9 ± 14.8 kg; stature, 167 ± 8.7 cm) were assessed for depressive symptoms using the online Beck Depression Inventory self-report questionnaire. The relationship between pre-quarantine physical activity and mental health and wellbeing during lockdown has been investigated. A significant difference in body mass index (BMI) between active and inactive participants (p = 0.03) was observed; with females also recording a 3% higher BMI than males. All participants showed a decrease in mental health compared to pre-quarantine. However, pre-quarantine inactivity was found to result in a greater negative impact on mental health and well-being than those active pre-quarantine (p < 0.01). The sedentary population had a 4-fold greater incidence of mild-depression than the active population. This suggests that activity level plays an important role in shielding people from anxiety and stress, whilst it builds mental strength in individuals that can be called upon in trying and difficult situations. Nevertheless, pre-quarantine activity levels did not lead to any significant change in levels of extreme depression in the sample population.

Background: Turkey has a marked increase in the proportion of female medical students and graduates doctors compared to males. However, females are still underrepresented in some disciplines and grouped in other branches of medicine. It is essential to regularly assess the medical students' trends toward the specialty and avoid the shortage and maldistribution in some critical specialties. This study aims to investigate the gender differences in Turkish medical students’ specialty preferences and influencing factors. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study carried out among final year students at the Bezmialem Vakif University (BVU), Faculty of Medicine in Istanbul, Turkey. Data collected from March to April 2018 using a pre-tested self-administered questionnaire included socio-demographic characteristics of the population, first choices for specialization, and the factors influencing those choices. An independent sample t-test performed to test the gender differences in different influencing factors. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 16. Results:  A total of seventy (70) students (response rate of 69.5 %) included in the data analysis. The mean age of total respondents was 24.9 ± 0.96 (ranged 23-27), and the male to female ratio of students was approximately 1:1.4. Out of nineteen (19) factors, statistically significant gender differences noted in the mean scores of six factors. Male students were more influenced by family expectations (2.76 ± 0.87, p=0.008), geographical consideration (2.97 ± 0.91, p=0.053), and high income expectations (2.90 ± 0.90, p=0.024) compared to female students. However, female students were more influenced by personal interests (3.61 ± 0.49, p=0.041), personality characteristics (3.59 ± 0.55, p=0.010) and malpractice (2.73 ± 1.03, p=0.015) compared to male students. Conclusion: There is a significant difference between the sexes in terms of priorities; family, income, and geographical distribution significantly impacted on men, while women were more concerned with lifestyle, well-being and avoiding responsibility.

In this study, it was investigated whether the points of the scale of “lifelong learning tendencies” of the engineer candidates who took physics course varied according to, variables such as "gender, physics success, duration of internet use and department of education". The population of the study consists from s a total of 225 engineer candidates who took Physics-1 course at Necmettin Erbakan University Engineering and Architecture Faculty in Fall in 2016-2017 academic year. Frequency, mean, independent t test, one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson correlation analysis were used to analyze the data. According to the findings, the points taken from of the scale of “lifelong learning tendencies” do not show any significant difference according to departments and internet usage period. The mean scores of persistence and learning which are the subdimensions of the lifelong learning tendency scaleof do not show a significant difference according to gender, whereas the scores of lack of motivation and curiosity show significant differences according to gender. Female students' points are more higher in the dimension of lack of motivation, male students’ points are more higher in the dimension of curiosity. As the lifelong learning tendecies, perseverance and motivation of engineer candidates increase, physics course achievements also increase.Extended English abstract is in the end of PDF (TURKISH) file. ÖzetBu araştırmada, fizik dersini alan mühendis adaylarının, yaşam boyu öğrenme eğilimleri ölçeğinin genelinden alınan puanların “cinsiyet, fizik başarısı, internet kullanım süresi ve öğrenim görülen bölüm” değişkenlerine göre farklılaşıp farklılaşmadığı incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu, 2016-2017 Eğitim-öğretim yılı güz yarıyılında Necmettin Erbakan Üniversitesi Mühendislik-Mimarlık Fakültesinde Fizik -1 dersini alan toplam 225 mühendis adayı oluşturmaktadır. Verilerin çözümlenmesinde frekans, ortalama, bağımsız t testi, tek yönlü varyans analizi(Anova) ve Pearson korelasyon analizleri kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgulara göre, yaşam boyu öğrenme eğilimleri ölçeğinin genelinden alınan puanlar, bölümlere ve internet kullanım süresine göre anlamlı bir farklılık göstermemektedir. Yaşam boyu öğrenme eğilimleri ölçeğinin alt boyutlarından sebat ve öğrenmeyi düzenlemede yoksunluk puan ortalamaları, cinsiyete göre anlamlı bir farklılık göstermezken, motivasyon ve merak yoksunluğu puan ortalamaları ise cinsiyete göre anlamlı bir farklılık göstermiştir. Kızların motivasyonları, erkeklerin ise merak yoksunlukları daha yüksek çıkmıştır. Mühendis adaylarının yaşam boyu öğrenme eğitimleri, sebat ve motivasyonları arttıkça fizik ders başarıları da artmaktadır.

Abstract Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system that mainly affects young adults, promoting a great impact on functionality. Fatigue is a very common symptom, associated with multiple impairments in sensitivity, muscle activity, neuromotor control, balance, cognition and problem-solving ability. MS leads to strong functional restrictions, particularly in the context of daily living activities, as well as in patient participation. Objective: To understand the implications of a self-regulation program in the perception of well-being and mental health in MS patients. Methods: A set of exercises was implemented for use in daily activities, supported by different studies with MS patients. Patients were asked to classify the severity of their disease and to use the Mental Health Inventory (MHI-38), at the beginning (time A) and at the end (time B) of the self-regulation program. We used the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. A non-parametric statistical hypothesis test (Wilcoxon test) was used to analyze the variables. Results: The mean age was 44 years old, with patients between the ages of 20 and 58. 58.3% were women, 37.5% were currently married, 67% were retired and the mean level of education was 12.5 years. The correlation between the perception of disease severity and psychological well-being before the self-regulation program (r = 0.26, p < 0.05) and after the intervention (r = 0.37, p < 0.01) suggests a low to moderate correlation. Conclusion: The implementation of the self-regulatory model, through the promotion of physical activity in patients with MS, had a positive impact of clinical rehabilitation, well-being, and perception of disease severity of these people.

The main purpose of this research was to find out the mean difference between teachers and lecturers in mental health and psychological well-being. The total sample consisted of 120 teachers and lecturers. The research tools for mental health scale was measured by Dr. A. K. Shreevastav and Dr. Jagdish and the psychological well-being scale was measured by Bhogle and Prakash (1995).The ‘t’ test is applied to check the significance of mental health and psychological well-being in teachers and lecturers to check the method which was used for test. The result shows, there is no significant difference between teachers and lecturers in mental health and psychological well-being .So, the hypothesis is accepted.

BACKGROUND There have been mixed results of the studies checking whether prayers do actually extend the life duration of the people prayed for. Most studies on the topic included a small number of prayers and most of them focused on people already struggling with a medical condition. Intercessory prayer’s influence on health is of scholarly interest, yet it is unclear if its effect may be dependent on the number of prayers for a named individual received per annum. OBJECTIVE We sought to examine if there is a noticeable increased longevity effect of intercessory prayer for a named individual’s well-being, if he receives a very high number of prayers per annum for an extended period. METHODS We retrieved and conducted a statistical analysis of the data about the length of life for 857 Roman Catholic bishops, 500 Catholic priests, and 3038 male academics from the US, France, Italy, Poland, Brazil, and Mexico. We obtained information for these individuals who died between 1988 and 2018 from Wikidata, and conducted an observational cohort study. Bishops were chosen for the study, as they receive millions of individual prayers for well being, according to conservative estimates. RESULTS There was a main effect for occupation F(2, 4391) = 4.07, p = .017, ηp 2 = .002, with pairwise comparisons indicating significant differences between the mean life duration of bishops (M=30489) and of priests (M=29894), but none between the academic teachers (M=30147) and either of the other groups. A comparison analysis between bishops from the largest and the smallest dioceses showed no significant difference t(67.31)=1.61, p = .11. Our main outcome measure is covariance of the mean length of life in each of the categories: bishops, priests, academic teachers, controlled for nationality. CONCLUSIONS The first analysis proved that bishops live longer than priests, but due to a marginal effect size this result should be treated with caution. No difference was found between the mean length of life of bishops from the largest and the smallest dioceses. We found no difference between bishops and male academics. These results show that the impact of intercessory prayers on longevity is not observable.

Abstract Background This study was an attempt to assess and compare the gender-wise lifestyle patterns and well-being status among the employees of a tertiary care teaching hospital. Material and Methods This is a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study conducted at a tertiary care hospital between May and August 2019. A total of 777 employees belonging to both genders (male and female) and working at different professional levels were assessed. All the enrolled employees were subjected to a comprehensive study tool consisting of various dimensions of their health, which included physical, mental, social, spiritual and intellectual health dimensions. Results Among the participants, 327 (42.1%) were male and 450 (57.9%) were female. There was no significant difference in the mean age of male (37.91 ± 7.52) and female (36.85 ± 8.16) employees (p = 0.07). A significantly higher proportion of diabetes and hypertension were seen in male employees (9.8% and 14.4%, respectively) than in female (5.6% and 6.2% respectively). The overall well-being was better in male employees than in females and was statistically significant (p < 0.0001). We found that male employees had statistically significant better well-being in terms of physical, mental and social health whereas female employees had intellectual health. Conclusion The overall well-being in healthcare staff was good at our tertiary care hospital, and the outstanding/good well-being rate was higher in male employees than in female employees. Female employees experienced risks with regard to their physical health.

Abstract Background COVID-19 lockdowns have reduced opportunities for physical activity (PA) and encouraged more sedentary lifestyles. A concomitant of sedentariness is compromised mental health. We investigated the effects of COVID-19 lockdown on PA, sedentary behavior, and mental health across four Western nations (USA, UK, France, and Australia). Methods An online survey was administered in the second quarter of 2020 (N = 2541). We measured planned and unplanned dimensions of PA using the Brunel Lifestyle Physical Activity Questionnaire and mental health using the 12-item General Health Questionnaire. Steps per day were recorded only from participants who used an electronic device for this purpose, and sedentary behavior was reported in hours per day (sitting and screen time). Results In the USA and Australia samples, there was a significant decline in planned PA from pre- to during lockdown. Among young adults, Australians exhibited the lowest planned PA scores, while in middle-aged groups, the UK recorded the highest. Young adults exhibited the largest reduction in unplanned PA. Across nations, there was a reduction of ~ 2000 steps per day. Large increases in sedentary behavior emerged during lockdown, which were most acute in young adults. Lockdown was associated with a decline in mental health that was more pronounced in women. Conclusions The findings illustrate the deleterious effects of lockdown on PA, sedentary behavior, and mental health across four Western nations. Australian young and lower middle-aged adults appeared to fare particularly badly in terms of planned PA. The reduction in steps per day is equivalent to the non-expenditure of ~ 100 kcal. Declines in mental health show how harmful lockdowns can be for women in particular.

This study was conducted to investigate medical students’ lifestyle habits, including sleep quality, eating and drinking patterns, physical activity, and social status. Method: This research project is part two of a multi-institutional cross-sectional observational study conducted among medical students from six medical colleges in Saudi Arabia between September and December 2019. Results: 675 medical students were enrolled electively into the lifestyle study. About half of this number were male students and the majority were aged 18–24 years. Most students (87.6%) slept between 4–8 h a day and over 44% were dissatisfied with their sleep. Only 28.1% had three meals a day; about 40% of them usually or always skipped breakfast. A total of 44% usually or always ate fast food and 44.7% drank 2 L of water per day. Moreover, male students were significantly consuming more fast food than females, p < 0.001. The majority (63.3%) revealed they usually or always drink black coffee daily. Females were significantly more inclined to regular coffee consumption than males, p < 0.001. Only 4.3% exercised for 30 min or more daily. The majority (65%) of the students were introverted; they had few close friends. Yet, 81% were somewhat satisfied or satisfied with their social life. Male students were significantly more satisfied with their social life than females, p = 0.001. Only 4.6% smoked cigarettes daily whereas 7.1% smoked e-cigarettes daily. In contrast, only 0.3% used shisha (hookah) daily. Male medical students were substantially more inclined to e-cigarette use than females (p < 0.001). The top five leisure activities of a medical student were surfing social media (75.9%), watching movies (61.3%), hanging out with friends (58.1%), spending time with their family (55.4%), and browsing the Internet (53.6%). Female medical students were significantly more inclined to surf social media than male medical students, p = 0.022; also, watching movies was preferred for females compared to males, p = 0.006. Conclusion: This study revealed that the majority of these medical students in Saudi Arabia exhibited healthy lifestyles to some extent, and these health-promoting behaviors differed based on sex, especially concerning physical activity and eating patterns. The findings of this study provide relevant information for future actions that will be geared towards effectively decreasing the occurrence of chronic illnesses and improving future doctors’ well-being.

Objectives: To determine if adolescents perceive community-based exercise as beneficial to their well-being and in what ways. Methods: A New South Wales Police Citizens Youth Club ran a four-week fitness course. The classes involved: 1) sports including basketball and soccer, 2) non-contact boxing drills, and 3) games, both team games such as dodgeball and non-team games such as line tag. Parental consent to offer a survey at the completion of the course was requested during registration. The survey was the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale; it was minimally modified to measure perceived benefit to mental well-being instead of actual benefit. Results: Thirty-one high school adolescents, ages 13–18, completed the survey. As a group, participants reported that they believed their well-being had improved after the course. The mean score for each survey item showed an improvement in every area of mental well-being for this sample of adolescents. Thirty-two per cent of adolescents reported having less energy. Survey scores indicated a statistically significant improvement in perceived well-being ( p<0.0001). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that four weeks of community-based exercise improves perceived mental well-being in adolescent participants.
