Potential Use

Although groundwater is a strategic source in volcanic islands, most hydrogeochemical research on this topic has been focused on volcanic activity monitoring, overlooking general hydrogeological aspects. The same applies to one of the most studied volcanoes in the world, Stromboli Island (Italy). Here, we provide a hydrogeological scheme of its coastal aquifer, retrieving inferences about its potential use as a water supply source and for optimizing monitoring protocols for volcanic surveillance. Starting from the hydrogeochemical literature background, we analyzed new data, acquired both for volcano monitoring purposes and during specific surveys. Among these, there were saturated hydraulic conductivity measurements of selected rock samples and precise determinations of water table elevations based on GNSS surveys of wells. We identified a ubiquitous thin lens of brackish water floating on seawater and composed of a variable mixing of marine and meteoric components; inlets of hydrothermal fluids to the aquifer are basically gases, mainly CO2. Based on its hydrogeochemical character, the coastal aquifer of Stromboli could be used as a water supply source after desalinization by reverse osmosis, while the wells located far from the seashore are the most interesting for volcano monitoring, because they are less disturbed by the shallow geochemical noise.

Water shortage problems are increasing in many water-deficient areas. Most of the current research on multi-source combined water supplies depends on an overall generalization of regional water supply systems, which are seldom broken down into the detail required to address specific research objectives. This paper proposes the concept of a water treatment and distribution station (water station), and generalizes the water supply system into three modules: water supply source, water station, and water user. Based on a topological diagram of the water network (supply source–station–user), a refined water resource allocation model was established. The model results can display, in detail, the water supply source, water supply quantity, water distribution engineering, and other information of all users in each water distribution area. This makes it possible to carry out a detailed analysis of the supply and demand of users, and to provide suggestions and theoretical guidance for regional water distribution implementation. Tianjin’s water resource allocation was selected as a case study, and a water resource allocation scheme for a multi-source, combined water supply, was simulated and discussed.

On account of increasing contradiction between water for life, environment, agriculture and water supply in Haoshuichuan watershed, it constructs new projects for water diversion, pumping, transpiration and distribution on the base of current project layout. A unified deployment of water supply source is formed through 1 reservoir, 11 key dams and 15 medium-sized check dams which have been built in river basins. It establishes watershed water resources joint scheduling mode through application of optimization theory, and adopts MATLAB optimization toolbox for the solution of the model. The research result may provide decision-making basis for river basin agricultural layout, ecological restoration and sustainable economic development, also provide reference for joint scheduling of water sources in similar regions.

This paper aims to carry out the volumetric analysis of 3-D resistivity distribution of leachate plume in Third Cemetery, Benin City, South-South, Nigeria. If not appropriately located or not sufficiently protected, cemeteries pose a significant health problem for the people (Fisher and Croupkamp,1993). Health concern about the possible impact of the cemeteries in Nigeria on the water supply has prompted this research. The research engaged 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional imaging (tomography) to investigate the presence and migration of leachate plumes in the cemetery and computation of time-lapse to detect the time rate of migration in both the vertical and horizontal directions. The geoelectric models obtained for the surveys displayed leachate plumes starting from the laterite (the burial environment) down to the sandy formation (the regional water supply source). The leachate plumes presence in the sand bed is modeled and described as shown in the 2-D and 3-D displays. This study showed that parts of the cemetery had been contaminated. This contamination was also observed to have infiltrated into the aquifer in the cemetery. 3-D block model, using Voxler 4.0 software was employed to carry out the volumetric analysis of the 3-D resistivity distribution of leachate plume in the Third Cemetery.

This paper analysis the potential of using Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) as an analytical tool in multi criteria decision analysis, to identify the best water supply source for Benin City. The water supply sources available in Benin are Rainfall, Ground Water, Surface Water and Storm Water Runoff. In order to compare characteristics and rank the four major water supply source, expert advice was solicited, structured questionnaires administered, and a set of criterions was derived that would be used in evaluation procedure. The following set of criterions was adopted: Cost, Availability, Ease of distribution, Accessibility, Sustainability, Quality. In analysing the pairwise comparative judgments in this study, Ground Water was the most important alternative as it had the highest score of 0.4130 in the computation of the weighted average, making Ground Water the best water supply source for Benin City.
