Wind energy expansion is worldwide followed by various limitations, i.e. land availability, the NIMBY (not in my backyard) attitude, interference on birds migration routes and so on. This undeniable expansion is pushing wind farms near populated areas throughout the years, where noise regulation is more stringent. That demands solutions for the wind turbine (WT) industry, in order to produce quieter WT units. Focusing in the subject of airfoil noise prediction, it can help the assessment and design of quieter wind turbine blades. Considering the airfoil noise as a composition of many sound sources, and in light of the fact that the main noise production mechanisms are the airfoil self-noise and the turbulent inflow (TI) noise, this work is concentrated on the latter. TI noise is classified as an interaction noise, produced by the turbulent inflow, incident on the airfoil leading edge (LE). Theoretical and semi-empirical methods for the TI noise prediction are already available, based on Amiet’s broadband noise theory. Analysis of many TI noise prediction methods is provided by this work in the literature review, as well as the turbulence energy spectrum modeling. This is then followed by comparison of the most reliable TI noise methodologies, qualitatively and quantitatively, with the error estimation, compared to the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings solution for computational aeroacoustics. Basis for integration of airfoil inflow noise prediction into a wind turbine noise prediction code is the final goal of this work.

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to describe the current status of open rotor noise prediction methods and to highlight future challenges in this area. A number of analytic and numerical methods are described which can be used for predicting ‘isolated’ and ‘installed’ open rotor tonal noise. Broadband noise prediction methods are also described and it is noted that further development and validation of the current models is required. The paper concludes with a discussion of the analytical methods which are used to assess the acoustic data collected during the high-speed wind-tunnel testing of a model scale advanced open rotor rig.

Luxury high-speed boats are increasingly being used for entertainment purposes. However, not only humans, but also animals are negatively affected by high-speed boats, and time is running out fast for people to do something about it. This study presents a review of current negative effects of high-speed boats to the environment. In this study, the flow around a benchmark planing Fridsma boat is simulated by CFD and resistance values for different non-dimensional Froude number (Fn) conditions are validated from the experimental results obtained from the literature. Using the same CFD methodology, a catamaran model in which the towing tank test results are available, is simulated for different Fn conditions and resistance values are predicted. In the CFD analysis, unsteady flow around the Fridsma hull model and catamaran model is simulated using overset meshing technique and turbulence is modeled by Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) with SST (Menter) k-omega turbulence model. Resistance values are compared with the experimental data and required propulsion powers are estimated for different Fn conditions. Then, total resistance of the catamaran for full-scale vessel is calculated using an extrapolation method and required propulsion power predictions are conducted. Noise prediction, corresponding to the required propulsion power are presented. In particular, the change of noise level and harmful gases released into the environment, when the speed of the vessel increases are examined and discussed. Consequently, it is believed that this study would lay an important foundation for the widespread investigation for the negative effects of the high-speed boats in the future.

A benchmark of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)-informed analytical methods, which are attractive for predicting fan broadband noise, was conducted within the framework of the European project TurboNoiseBB. This paper discusses the first part of the benchmark, which investigates the influence of the RANS inputs. Its companion paper focuses on the influence of the applied acoustic models on predicted fan broadband noise levels. While similar benchmarking activities were conducted in the past, this benchmark is unique due to its large and diverse data set involving members from more than ten institutions. In this work, the authors analyze RANS solutions performed at approach conditions for the ACAT1 fan. The RANS solutions were obtained using different CFD codes, mesh resolutions, and computational settings. The flow, turbulence, and resulting fan broadband noise predictions are analyzed to pinpoint critical influencing parameters related to the RANS inputs. Experimental data are used for comparison. It is shown that when turbomachinery experts perform RANS simulations using the same geometry and the same operating conditions, the most crucial choices in terms of predicted fan broadband noise are the type of turbulence model and applied turbulence model extensions. Chosen mesh resolutions, CFD solvers, and other computational settings are less critical.

In this study, a 3-D, unsteady, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) CFD code coupled to an acoustic calculation is used to predict the contribution of the exit guide vanes to tonal fan noise downstream. The configuration investigated is that corresponding to the NASA Source Diagnostic Test (SDT) 22-in fan rig. One configuration from the SDT matrix is considered here: the approach condition, and outlet guide vane count designed for cut-off of the blade passage frequency. In this chosen configuration, there are 22 rotor blades and 54 stator blades. The stators are located 2.5 tip chords downstream of the rotor trailing edge. The RANS computations are used to obtain the spectra of the unsteady surface pressure on the exit guide vanes. The surface pressure at the blade passage frequency and its second harmonic are then integrated together with the Green’s function for an annular duct to obtain the pressure at locations in the duct. Comparison of the computed sound power level at the exhaust plane with experiment show good agreement at the cut-on circumferential mode. The results from this investigation validate the use of the CFD code along with the acoustic model for downstream fan noise predictions. This validation enables future investigations such as the effect of duct variation on the exhaust tonal power level and the validity of using this method for predicting broadband noise levels.
