he basic ideas about the process of introducing cores into protective barriers and the most common core patterns and their location in conventional and sub-caliber small arms bullets are discussed. The materials used for manufacture of cores are analyzed. It is concluded that for mass bullets of increased armor penetration the most rational choice can be considered the use of high-carbon low-alloy steels of a new generation with a natural composite structure and hardness of up to 70 HRC. For specialized armor-piercing bullets, cores made from promising economically-alloyed high-speed steels characterized by a high complex of «hardness—bending strength» are better alternative than ones made of hard alloys or tungsten alloys.

The modern power industry is characterized by intense development of distributed generation, with which numerous sources of different capacities are connected into a single network. This makes it possible to improve the reliability of the entire system, since the probability of several sources to fail simultaneously is quite low. Electric generation based on high-speed gas turbine units accounts for a significant share in the overall balance, due to which scientific research and new engineering solutions in this area are important and relevant. An innovative design of a high-speed gas turbine unit based on a switched axial generator is proposed. This electrical machine has a diamagnetic armature, which eliminates magnetic losses, due to which better efficiency of the power unit is achieved and its design is simplified. The high speed of rotation and the presence of critical resonant rotor speeds generated the need to adopt appropriate engineering decisions in regard of its supports. A combined suspension involving the use of magnetic and gas-dynamic bearings is proposed. The magnetic bearings support the gas turbine unit operation at low speeds during its acceleration, and the gas-dynamic bearings support its operation at high nominal speed. The generator design and the combined suspension layout are shown. The numerical analyses of magnetic and gas-dynamic bearings for a gas turbine unit for a capacity of 100 kW and rotation speed of 70 000 rpm are given. The study results can be used for a series of gas turbine units with capacities ranging from 10 to 500 kW. In our opinion, this concept is competitive with modern analogs with a radial generator design.

SummaryThe current interest in supersonic transport aircraft makes it appropriate to consider the problems of propulsion nozzle systems for high speed flight. The discussion will be confined mainly to this field of activity.In the absence of external drag and weight factors, the ideal configuration to maintain optimum thrust at all flight speeds would employ a mechanically variable area ratio nozzle. By such means the jet flow could be fully and properly expanded at all times.A practical design to accommodate such variations is inherently complex, and so an alternative solution using aerodynamic techniques has been sought. It is necessary to remember that the success of whatever method is eventually chosen must rest on its ability to combine a high performance at cruise with very small loss during other critical phases of the flight plan.This paper describes some of the results of a nozzle research programme aimed primarily at solving the above problem, with an attempt to explain the philosophy behind the aerodynamic techniques tried. Some discussion is given of the experimental difficulties in establishing a sufficiently accurate standard of measurement for design point performance. In a few chosen configurations experimental results have been extensively backed by theoretical studies.The need to demonstrate off-design behaviour in the presence of an external flow field is stressed, with special reference to the misleading results often obtained from static tests.Finally, some attention is given to the question of base bleed, with its repercussions on the installation of the propulsion nozzle in an aircraft.

A new generation electric high-speed train called Aerotrain has levitation wings and levitates under Wing-in-Ground (WIG) effect along a U-shaped guideway. The previous study found that lacking knowledge of the design makes the prototype unable to regain stability when losing control. In this paper, the nonlinear three-dimensional dynamic model of the Aerotrain based on the rigid body model has been developed to investigate the relationship between the vehicle body design and its stability. Based on the dynamic model, this paper considered an Aerotrain with a horizontal tail and a vertical tail. To evaluate the stability, the location and area of these tails were parameterized. The effects of these parameters on the longitudinal and directional stability have been investigated to show that: the horizontal tail gives its best performance if the tail area is a function of the tail location; the larger vertical tail area and (or) the farther vertical tail location will give better directional stability. As for the lateral stability, a dihedral front levitation wing design was investigated. This design did not show its effectiveness, therefore a control system is needed. The obtained results are useful for the optimization studies on Aerotrain design as well as developing experimental prototypes.

Spintronics holds great potential for next-generation high-speed and low–power consumption information technology. Recently, lead halide perovskites (LHPs), which have gained great success in optoelectronics, also show interesting magnetic properties. However, the spin-related properties in LHPs originate from the spin-orbit coupling of Pb, limiting further development of these materials in spintronics. Here, we demonstrate a new generation of halide perovskites, by alloying magnetic elements into optoelectronic double perovskites, which provide rich chemical and structural diversities to host different magnetic elements. In our iron-alloyed double perovskite, Cs2Ag(Bi:Fe)Br6, Fe3+ replaces Bi3+ and forms FeBr6 clusters that homogenously distribute throughout the double perovskite crystals. We observe a strong temperature-dependent magnetic response at temperatures below 30 K, which is tentatively attributed to a weak ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic response from localized regions. We anticipate that this work will stimulate future efforts in exploring this simple yet efficient approach to develop new spintronic materials based on lead-free double perovskites.
