The present paper uses the detailed flow data produced by direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a three-dimensional, spatially developing plane free shear layer to assess several commonly used turbulence models in compressible flows. The free shear layer is generated by two parallel streams separated by a splitter plate, with a naturally developing inflow condition. The DNS is conducted using a high-order discontinuous spectral element method (DSEM) for various convective Mach numbers. The DNS results are employed to provide insights into turbulence modelling. The analyses show that with the knowledge of the Reynolds velocity fluctuations and averages, the considered strong Reynolds analogy models can accurately predict temperature fluctuations and Favre velocity averages, while the extended strong Reynolds analogy models can correctly estimate the Favre velocity fluctuations and the Favre shear stress. The pressure–dilatation correlation and dilatational dissipation models overestimate the corresponding DNS results, especially with high compressibility. The pressure–strain correlation models perform excellently for most pressure–strain correlation components, while the compressibility modification model gives poor predictions. The results of an a priori test for subgrid-scale (SGS) models are also reported. The scale similarity and gradient models, which are non-eddy viscosity models, can accurately reproduce SGS stresses in terms of structure and magnitude. The dynamic Smagorinsky model, an eddy viscosity model but based on the scale similarity concept, shows acceptable correlation coefficients between the DNS and modelled SGS stresses. Finally, the Smagorinsky model, a purely dissipative model, yields low correlation coefficients and unacceptable accumulated errors.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been widely used for compressor design, yet the prediction of performance and stage matching for multi-stage, high-speed machines remain challenging. This paper presents the authors’ effort to improve the reliability of CFD in multistage compressor simulations. The endwall features (e.g. blade fillet and shape of the platform edge) are meshed with minimal approximations. Turbulence models with linear and non-linear eddy viscosity models are assessed. The non-linear eddy viscosity model predicts a higher production of turbulent kinetic energy in the passages, especially close to the endwall region. This results in a more accurate prediction of the choked mass flow and the shape of total pressure profiles close to the hub. The non-linear viscosity model generally shows an improvement on its linear counterparts based on the comparisons with the rig data. For geometrical details, truncated fillet leads to thicker boundary layer on the fillet and reduced mass flow and efficiency. Shroud cavities are found to be essential to predict the right blockage and the flow details close to the hub. At the part speed the computations without the shroud cavities fail to predict the major flow features in the passage and this leads to inaccurate predictions of massflow and shapes of the compressor characteristic. The paper demonstrates that an accurate representation of the endwall geometry and an effective turbulence model, together with a good quality and sufficiently refined grid result in a credible prediction of compressor matching and performance with steady state mixing planes.

A numerical study of compressible jet flows is carried out using Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbulence models such as k-ɛ and k-ω-SST. An experimental investigation is performed concurrently using high-speed optical methods such as Schlieren photography and shadowgraphy. Numerical and experimental studies are carried out for the compressible impinging at various impinging angles and nozzle-to-wall distances. The results from both investigations converge remarkably well and agree with experimental data from the open literature. From the flow visualizations of the velocity fields, the RANS simulations accurately model the shock structures within the core jet region. The first shock cell is found to be constraint due to the interaction with the bow-shock structure for nozzle-to-wall distance less than 1.5 nozzle diameter. The results from the current study show that the RANS models utilized are suitable to simulate compressible free jets and impinging jet flows with varying impinging angles.

Abstract Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are employed for aerodynamic and aeroelastic modelling in axial compressors. Their solutions are highly dependent on the turbulence models for closure. The main objective of this work is to assess the widely used Spalart-Allmaras model’s suitability for compressor flows. For this purpose, an extensive investigation of the sources of uncertainties in a high-speed multi-stage compressor rig was carried out. The grid resolution near the casing end wall, which affects the tip leakage flow and casing boundary layer, was found to have a major effect on the stability limit prediction. Refinements in this region led to a stall margin loss prediction. It was found that this loss was exclusively due to the destruction term in the SA model.

A joint comprehensive validation activity on the structured numerical method elsA and the hybrid numerical method TAU was conducted with respect to dynamic stall applications. To improve two-dimensional prediction, the influence of several factors on the dynamic stall prediction was investigated. The validation was performed for three deep dynamic stall test cases of the rotor blade airfoil OA209 against experimental data from two-dimensional pitching airfoil experiments, covering low-speed and high-speed conditions. The requirements for spatial discretization and for temporal resolution in elsA and TAU are shown. The impact of turbulence modeling is discussed for a variety of turbulence models ranging from one-equation Spalart–Allmaras-type models to state-of-the-art, seven-equation Reynolds stress models. The influence of the prediction of laminar/turbulent boundary layer transition on the numerical dynamic stall simulation is described. Results of both numerical methods are compared to allow conclusions to be drawn with respect to an improved prediction of dynamic stall.

High speed impinging jets are frequently used in a variety of industrial applications including thermal and coating control processes. These flows are liable to the production of very intense narrow band acoustic tones, which are produced by a feedback mechanism between instabilities in the jet free shear layer which roll up to form large scale coherent structures, and pressure fluctuations produced by the impingement of these structures at the impingement surface. This paper examines tone generation of a high speed planar gas jet impinging normally on a flat, rigid surface. Experiments are performed over the complete range of subsonic and transonic jet flow velocities for which tones are generated, from U0 = 150m/s (M≈0.4) to choked flow (U0 = 343m/s, M = 1), and over the complete range of impingement distance for which tones occur. The effect of varying the jet thickness is also examined. The behavior of the planar impinging jet case is compared to that of the axisymmetric case, and found to be significantly different, with tones being excited at larger impingement distances, and at lower flow velocities. The Strouhal numbers associated with tone generation in the planar case are on average an order of magnitude lower than that of the axisymmetric case when using similar velocity and length scales. The frequency behavior of the resulting tones is predicted using a simple feedback model, which allows the identification of the various shear layer modes of the instabilities driving tone generation. Finally, a thorough dimensionless analysis is performed in order to quantify the system behavior in terms of the appropriate scales.

Recent activities at CRAFT Tech related to the simulation of high speed laboratory jets, their control via passive actuation, and the scale-up and revisions required for real engines and operation at flight are discussed. We focus on aircraft applications related to jet noise reduction with activities pertinent to varied missile jet/plume applications the subject of other review papers. Laboratory jet experiments have served to validate the RANS turbulence models utilized and are supplemented by LES studies to provide data sets not readily obtainable in the laboratory such as temperature fluctuation data needed for thermal transport modeling. Applications for a military fighter aircraft indicate that laboratory experiments cannot replicate the real exhaust environment and thus can only suggest actuation concepts that are promising. CFD is required to revise and scale-up these concepts for the real engine and to provide estimates of their performance in flight. Studies presented show the differences between laboratory plumes and real plumes, as well as the effects of plume/plume and plume/aerodynamic interactions which are quite appreciable and show a markedly different structure than that of the isolated jet under the same operating conditions.
