Drag coefficient reduction in the presence of pressure gradients by heat transfer

Abstract In this present work, forced convection heat transfer from a heated blunt-headed cylinder in power-law fluids has been investigated numerically over the range of parameters, namely, Reynolds number (Re): 1–40, Prandtl number (Pr): 10–100 and power-law index (n): 0.3–1.8. The results are expressed in terms of local parameters, like streamline, isotherm, pressure coefficient, and local Nusselt number and global parameters, like wake length, drag coefficient, and average Nusselt number. The length of the recirculation zone on the rear side of the cylinder increases with the increasing value of Re and n. The effect of the total drag coefficient acting on the cylinder is seen to be higher at the low value of Re and its effect significant in shear-thinning fluids (n < 1). On the heat transfer aspect, the rate of heat transfer in fluids is increased by increasing the value of Re and Pr. The effect of heat transfer is enhanced in shear-thinning fluids up to ∼ 40% and it impedes it’s to ∼20% shear-thickening fluids. In the end, the numerical results of the total drag coefficient and average Nusselt number (in terms of J H −factor) have been correlated by simple expression to estimate the intermediate value for the new application.

The present work is focused on the aerodynamic study of different parameters, including both the posture of a cyclist’s upper limbs and the saddle position, in time trial (TT) stages. The aerodynamic influence of a TT helmet large visor is also quantified as a function of the helmet inclination. Experiments conducted in a wind tunnel on nine professional cyclists provided drag force and frontal area measurements to determine the drag force coefficient. Data statistical analysis clearly shows that the hands positioning on shifters and the elbows joined together are significantly reducing the cyclist drag force. Concerning the saddle position, the drag force is shown to be significantly increased (about 3%) when the saddle is raised. The usual helmet inclination appears to be the inclination value minimizing the drag force. Moreover, the addition of a large visor on the helmet is shown to provide a drag coefficient reduction as a function of the helmet inclination. Present results indicate that variations in the TT cyclist posture, the saddle position and the helmet visor can produce a significant gain in time (up to 2.2%) during stages.

Experimental measurements of heat transfer (St) are reported for low speed flow over scaled turbine roughness models at three different freestream pressure gradients: adverse, zero (nominally), and favorable. The roughness models were scaled from surface measurements taken on actual, in-service land-based turbine hardware and include samples of fuel deposits, TBC spallation, erosion, and pitting as well as a smooth control surface. All St measurements were made in a developing turbulent boundary layer at the same value of Reynolds number (Rex≅900,000). An integral boundary layer method used to estimate cf for the smooth wall cases allowed the calculation of the Reynolds analogy (2St/cf). Results indicate that for a smooth wall, Reynolds analogy varies appreciably with pressure gradient. Smooth surface heat transfer is considerably less sensitive to pressure gradients than skin friction. For the rough surfaces with adverse pressure gradient, St is less sensitive to roughness than with zero or favorable pressure gradient. Roughness-induced Stanton number increases at zero pressure gradient range from 16–44% (depending on roughness type), while increases with adverse pressure gradient are 7% less on average for the same roughness type. Hot-wire measurements show a corresponding drop in roughness-induced momentum deficit and streamwise turbulent kinetic energy generation in the adverse pressure gradient boundary layer compared with the other pressure gradient conditions. The combined effects of roughness and pressure gradient are different than their individual effects added together. Specifically, for adverse pressure gradient the combined effect on heat transfer is 9% less than that estimated by adding their separate effects. For favorable pressure gradient, the additive estimate is 6% lower than the result with combined effects. Identical measurements on a “simulated” roughness surface composed of cones in an ordered array show a behavior unlike that of the scaled “real” roughness models. St calculations made using a discrete-element roughness model show promising agreement with the experimental data. Predictions and data combine to underline the importance of accounting for pressure gradient and surface roughness effects simultaneously rather than independently for accurate performance calculations in turbines.

A review is given of the recent development in turbulent boundary layers. At first, for the case of incompressible flow, the variation of the shape of velocity profile with the pressure gradient is discussed; also the temperature distribution and heat transfer in incompressible boundary layers are treated. Finally, problems of the turbulent boundary layer in compressible flow are considered.

Modeling fluid flows is a general procedure to handle engineering problems. Here we present a systematic study of the flow and heat transfer around a circular cylinder by introducing a new representative appropriate drag coefficient concept. We demonstrate that the new modified drag coefficient may be a preferable dimensionless parameter to describe more appropriately the fluid flow physical behavior. A break in symmetry in the global structure of the entire flow field increases the difficulty of predicting heat and mass transfer behavior. A general simple drag model with high accuracy is further developed over the entire range of Reynolds numbers met in practice. In addition, we observe that there may exist an inherent relation between the drag and heat and mass transfer. A simple analogy model is established to predict heat transfer behavior from the cylinder drag data. This finding provides great insight into the underlying physical mechanism.

This paper describes the results of an experimental investigation into the effect of the mainstream flow history on the film cooling effectiveness and the heat transfer characteristics from the combination of one row of simple angle holes and one row of compound angle holes. The mainstream flow history includes: favorable pressure gradient factors in the range −1.11 × 10−6 to +1.11 × 10−6 and turbulence intensity in the range 0.3% to 4.7%. The presence of favorable pressure gradients in the flow reduces the film cooling protection of the surfaces from both compound angle holes or combination of simple and compound angle holes, while the presence of adverse pressure gradients increases the film cooling effectiveness at low blowing rate and decreases it at high blowing rate. Increasing the turbulence intensity reduces the film cooling effectiveness from compound angle holes or combination of simple and compound angle holes.
