Reducing Shock Interactions in Transonic Turbine via Three-Dimensional Aerodynamic Shaping

Accurate predictions of unsteady forcing on turbine blades are essential for the avoidance of high-cycle-fatigue issues during turbine engine development. Further, if one can demonstrate that predictions of unsteady interaction in a turbine are accurate, then it becomes possible to anticipate resonant-stress problems and mitigate them through aerodynamic design changes during the development cycle. A successful reduction in unsteady forcing for a transonic turbine with significant shock interactions due to downstream components is presented here. A pair of methods to reduce the unsteadiness was considered and rigorously analyzed using a three-dimensional, time resolved Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) solver. The first method relied on the physics of shock reflections itself and involved altering the stacking of downstream components to achieve a bowed airfoil. The second method considered was circumferentially-asymmetric vane spacing which is well known to spread the unsteadiness due to vane-blade interaction over a range of frequencies. Both methods of forcing reduction were analyzed separately and predicted to reduce unsteady pressures on the blade as intended. Then, both design changes were implemented together in a transonic turbine experiment and successfully shown to manipulate the blade unsteadiness in keeping with the design-level predictions. This demonstration was accomplished through comparisons of measured time-resolved pressures on the turbine blade to others obtained in a baseline experiment that included neither asymmetric spacing nor bowing of the downstream vane. The measured data were further compared to rigorous post-test simulations of the complete turbine annulus including a bowed downstream vane of non-uniform pitch.

Experimental measurements in the inlet of a transonic turbine blade cascade showed unacceptable pitchwise flow nonuniformity. A three-dimensional, Navier–Stokes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the imbedded bellmouth inlet in the facility was performed to identify and eliminate the source of the flow nonuniformity. The blockage and acceleration effects of the blades were accounted for by specifying a periodic static pressure exit condition interpolated from a separate three-dimensional Navier–Stokes CFD solution of flow around a single blade in an infinite cascade. Calculations of the original inlet geometry showed total pressure loss regions consistent in strength and location to experimental measurements. The results indicate that the distortions were caused by a pair of streamwise vortices that originated as a result of the interaction of the flow with the imbedded bellmouth. Computations were performed for an inlet geometry that eliminated the imbedded bellmouth by bridging the region between it and the upstream wall. This analysis indicated that eliminating the imbedded bellmouth nozzle also eliminates the pair of vortices, resulting in a flow with much greater pitchwise uniformity. Measurements taken with an installed redesigned inlet verify that the flow nonuniformity has indeed been eliminated.

The current paper presents the results of numerical and experimental clocking investigations performed in a high-pressure transonic turbine with a downstream vane row. The objective was a detailed analysis of shock and wake interactions in such a 1.5 stage machine while clocking the vanes. Therefore a transient 3D-Navier Stokes calculation was done for two clocking positions and the three dimensional results are compared with Laser-Doppler-Velocimetry measurements at midspan. Additionally the second vane was equipped with fast response pressure transducers to record the instantaneous surface pressure for 20 different clocking positions at midspan.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the flow field in a high-pressure transonic turbine with a downstream vane row (1.5 stage machine) concerning the airfoil indexing. The objective is a detailed analysis of the three-dimensional aerodynamics of the second vane for different clocking positions. To give an overview of the time-averaged flow field, five-hole probe measurements were performed upstream and downstream of the second stator. Furthermore in these planes additional unsteady measurements were carried out with laser Doppler velocimetry in order to record rotor phase-resolved velocity, flow angle, and turbulence distributions at two different clocking positions. In the planes upstream of the second vane, the time-resolved pressure field has been measured by means of a fast response aerodynamic pressure probe. This paper shows that the secondary flows of the second vane are significantly modified by the different clocking positions, in connection with the first vane modulation of the rotor secondary flows. An analysis of the performance of the second vane is also carried out, and a 0.6% variation in the second vane loss coefficient has been recorded among the different clocking positions.

A three-dimensional transonic turbine stage is computed by means of a numerical simulation tool. The simulation accounts for the coolant ejection from the stator blade and for the tip leakage of the rotor blade. The stator and rotor rows interact via a mixing plane, which allows the stage to be computed in a steady manner. The analysis is focused on the matching of the stator and rotor mass flow rates. The computations proved that the mixing plane approach allows the stator and rotor mass flow rates to be balanced with a careful choice of the stator-rotor static pressure interface. At the same time, the pitch averaged distribution of the transported quantities at the interface for the stator and rotor may differ slightly, together with the value of the static pressure at the hub.

A robust mixing plane method satisfying interface flux conservation, nonreflectivity and retaining interface flow variation; valid at all Mach numbers and applicable for any machine configuration is formulated and implemented in a vertex based finite volume solver for flow analysis and inverse design. The formulation is based on superposing perturbed flow variables derived from the three-dimensional (3D) characteristics obtained along the flow direction on the exchanged mixed out averaged quantities. The method is extended for low speed applications using low Mach number preconditioning. Subsequently, inverse design runs over a single stage transonic low pressure (LP) turbine configuration conducted at a fixed mass flow boundary condition and spanwise loading condition similar to the baseline generates optimized configurations providing performance improvement while achieving prespecified target meridional load distribution.
