We would like to bring to your attention the widespread practice of routine gastric lavage for newborns in Mexican hospitals. We recently completed a study of newborn feeding in health institutions in Mexico.1 A stratified random sample was selected from three regions in Mexico (Mexico City, Sonora, and Chiapas). Health facilities were stratified by type of provider (government or private), size (number of deliveries per month), specialties (gynecology-obstetrics, general, maternity, rural clinic), and geographical location (north, central, and south).
