Abstract When grinding high demands are usually placed on the geometrical tolerances of the workpiece surface. For this reason, the spindles of the grinding machines are normally designed with requirements for a minimum position change of the grinding disks due to external forces and bending moments. The design theory of these spindles is relatively well elaborated, as it represents the most frequently used solution in practice. However, there are also cases where it is necessary to grind some hard-to-reach areas, using a great ejection of the spindle. In these cases, it is necessary to reassess the required geometrical tolerances with regard to its necessity to comply with the minimal changes in the position of the grinding discs due to the great ejection. Where it is necessary to maintain high geometrical tolerances, it is necessary to ensure a greater rigidity of the spindle. This rigidity is usually improved by increasing its diameter. By doing this we also increase the weight of the spindle that is heavily ejected, and thus its deformation can occur due to gravity forces. That is why it is necessary to analyse the deflection of the spindle depending on its ejection in the course of its design. In the case we increase the diameter of the grinder spindle the possible applicable grinding disc diameter decreases, due to the growing size of its housing. Any grinding of hard-to-reach surfaces is therefore done in particular to improve the quality of the surface with low requirements on the geometrical tolerances. This article deals with the design patterns for a spindle used in axial grinding for inner rotating surfaces. The article contains a spindle design solution and an analysis of its deflections, depending on its ejection, and the size of the passive forces.

Rice mill has a very important role, this role is reflected in the large number of rice mills that spread almost evenly throughout the rice production centers in Indonesia. The large number of rice mills scattered in some areas does not guarantee the quality of rice produced will be better. One of the areas that have used rice milling technology is Sumbawa Barat Regency. The grinding machines used in this area are mobile. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effect of rice varieties used on the quality of rice from milling, to determine the quality of rice produced, and to determine the yield of the milling. This research was conducted by grinding Ciherang varieties, Cigelis and Infari 32 using mobile grinding machine each three replications. The result of this research showed that rice varieties had significant effect on yield and losses of milling. Infari 32 varieties yield average yield of 69.41%, followed by Cigelis varieties 62.75% and Ciherang 59.36%. Infari 32 varieties also resulted in the lowest shrinkage of 1.46% compared to Ciherang (3.48%) and Cigelis (2.95%).

JavaScript has become more and more popular in recent years because its wealthy features as being dynamic, interpreted and object-oriented with first-class functions. Furthermore, JavaScript is designed with event-driven and I/O non-blocking model that boosts the performance of overall application especially in the case of Node.js. To take advantage of these characteristics, many design patterns that implement asynchronous programming for JavaScript were proposed. However, choosing a right pattern and implementing a good asynchronous source code is a challenge and thus easily lead into less robust application and low quality source code. Extended from our previous works on exception handling code smells in JavaScript and exception handling code smells in JavaScript asynchronous programming with promise, this research aims at studying the impact of three JavaScript asynchronous programming patterns on quality of source code and application.

In recent years, flash evaporation processes have received an increased attention in the wine industry for must concentration applications. Specific constraints related to the wine industry area had lead to many improvements of flash evaporators initially designed for seawater desalination. In particular the quality of the vintage, the transportability of the system and the environmental impact are of main interest. Moreover, the preliminary design of such systems must also consider robustness criteria. Obviously, variations of temperatures and flow rates of liquids at the inlet of the process can dramatically impact the quality of the product at the system outlet. In particular, deviations from the target values of temperature and alcoholic volume fraction can lead to a severe degradation of the vintage. As it is common in product design to have multiple performance measures, the robust design problem is addressed using a multi-objective approach. A trade-offs is introduced between two main design objectives: (i) the improvement in overall performance (product quality, transportability, environmental impact and costs) and (ii) the lowering of the sensitivity of the product quality under uncertainty. These main objectives are related to several elementary objectives corresponding to design criteria and a preference aggregation method is used to formulate the two different design objectives. Objectives are linked to weighting parameters values equivalent to priority levels. The selection of the most preferred design solution is discussed according to different trade-off strategies. The generation of the Pareto set is addressed by the non dominated sorting genetic algorithm NGSAII. From computing results, our recommendations concern the compromise between performance and robustness of flash evaporators. In this context, the final alcoholic volume fraction of the wine is the most sensitive parameter, which justify to maintain a high value of evaporative capacity when designing this type of system.

Grinding is a vital method in machining techniques and an effective way to process materials such as hardened steels and silicon wafers. However, as the running time increases, the unbalance of grinding wheels produce a severe vibration and noise of grinding machines because of the uneven shedding of abrasive particles and the uneven adsorption of coolant, which has a severe and direct impact on the accuracy and quality of parts. Online balancing is an important and necessary technique to reduce the unbalance causing by these factors and adjust the time-varying balance condition of the grinding wheel. A new active online balancing method using liquid injection and free dripping is proposed in this paper. The proposed online balancing method possesses a continuous balancing ability and the problem of losing balancing ability for the active online balancing method using liquid injection is solved effectively because some chambers are full of liquid. The residual liquid contained in the balancing chambers is utilized as a compensation mass for reducing rotor unbalance, where the rotor phase is proposed herein as a target for determining the machine unbalance. A new balancing device with a controllable injection and free dripping structure is successfully designed. The relationship between the mass of liquid in the balancing chamber and the centrifugal force produced by liquid is identified. The performance of the proposed method is verified by the balancing experiments and the results of these experiments show that the vibration of unbalance response is reduced by 87.3% at 2700 r/min.

The study aims to guide the assisted living facility (ALF) design, in which biophilic design, which is observed to have positive physiological, psychological, and sociological effects on humans, is observed, and the principle of universal design is accessible and designed for everyone. Since there is no place called a biophilic ALF, the study is supported by a nature-oriented design method called Green Building Rating Tools. Green building certificate systems are explored in terms of biophilic and universal design, and three of the certifications show credits linked to the theories researched. With these certificates, green building certified ALFs located in the same region are selected. With the methodology applied on the case studies of three ALFs that received these certificates, how and where biophilic and universal design patterns can be transferred from theory to practice has been examined. The study observed the extent of 14 biophilic design patterns in ALFs and tabulated how to find each pattern in these facilities according to the methods and places.

An approach to an ontology-based information system design theory for spatial information system development is presented. This approach addresses the dynamic nature of information system development at the beginning of the 21st century and addresses the question of how to establish relationships between the various design components of a spatial information system. It should also help to automate and guide the design process while at the same time improve the quality of the process along with its outputs. An example of this approach is presented, along with examples of the various ontologies utilized in the design of this particular spatial information system. Finally, a method to mitigate the issues regarding the organization and management of a growing library of ontologies is discussed.

The undergraduate human factors course was improved at the Stevens Institute of Technology. The objectives of the course improvement were twofold: 1) to increase the quality of the course, and 2) to increase enrollment. Computer-based modules were developed and implemented to achieve these objectives. Three primary findings emerged from their use. First, students finished the course with a firm grounding in the empirical and experimental methods of human factors. Second, students generated more design solution alternatives by using the modules. Third, course enrollment increased by seventy-five percent.
