The article discusses the simplified mathematical model of the turbo cooling system and the algorithm based on the iterative calculation mechanism. The basic mathematical relations concerning the work of the turbocharger describing the essence of the processes occurring in turbocharging and the possibility of applying these connections in the research model including the phenomenon of turbo cooling were presented.

The effect has been studied of the inertia of the cooling system on the reliability of control of the temperature of the reaction mixture. The study has been made using a mathematical model of the batch reactor with an exothermic reaction. The temperature has been controlled by a two-level controller opening and closing the flow of the coolant. The aim of the control has been to maintain a constant value of the degree of utilization of the cooling capacity of the reactor. The instantaneous value of the degree of utilization has been assessed from the ratio of times for which the cooling system is idle to the time of operation. The reliability of control has been studied for variable activity of the catalyst.

Siemens Oil & Gas introduced an enhanced SGT-800 gas turbine during 2010. The new power rating is 50.5MW at a 38.3% electrical efficiency in simple cycle (ISO) and best in class combined-cycle performance of more than 55%, for improved fuel flexibility at low emissions. The updated components in the gas turbine are interchangeable from the existing 47MW rating. The increased power and improved efficiency are mainly obtained by improved compressor airfoil profiles and improved turbine aerodynamics and cooling air layout. The current paper is focused on the design modifications of the combustor parts and the combustion validation and operation experience. The serial cooling system of the annular combustion chamber is improved using aerodynamically shaped liner cooling air inlet and reduced liner rib height to minimize the pressure drop and optimize the cooling layout to improve the life due to engine operation hours. The cold parts of the combustion chamber were redesigned using cast cooling struts where the variable thickness was optimized to maximize the cycle life. Due to fewer thicker vanes of the turbine stage #1, the combustor-turbine interface is accordingly updated to maintain the life requirements due to the upstream effect of the stronger pressure gradient. Minor burner tuning is used which in combination with the previously introduced combustor passive damping results in low emissions for >50% load, which is insensitive to ambient conditions. The combustion system has shown excellent combustion stability properties, such as to rapid load changes and large flame temperature range at high loads, which leads to the possibility of single digit Dry Low Emission (DLE) NOx. The combustion system has also shown insensitivity to fuels of large content of hydrogen, different hydrocarbons, inerts and CO. Also DLE liquid operation shows low emissions for 50–100% load. The first SGT-800 with 50.5MW rating was successfully tested during the Spring 2010 and the expected performance figures were confirmed. The fleet leader has, up to January 2013, accumulated >16000 Equivalent Operation Hours (EOH) and a planned follow up inspection made after 10000 EOH by boroscope of the hot section showed that the combustor was in good condition. This paper presents some details of the design work carried out during the development of the combustor design enhancement and the combustion operation experience from the first units.

This paper discusses the problem of cooling system optimization within a gas turbine airfoil regarding to thermo-mechanical behavior of the component, as well as some economical aspects of turbine operation. The main goal of this paper is to show the possibilities of evolutionary approach application to the cooling system optimization. This method, despite its relatively high computational cost, seems to be a valuable tool to such technical problems. The analysis involves the optimization of location and size of internal cooling passages within an airfoil. Initially cooling is provided with circular passages and heat is transported by convection. During the optimization the number of channels can vary. The task is approached in 3D configuration. Each passage is fed with cooling air of constant parameters at the inlet. Also a constant pressure drop is assumed along the passage length. The thermal boundary conditions in passages vary with diameter and local vane temperature (passage wall temperature). The analysis is performed by means of the genetic algorithm for the optimization task and FEM for the heat transfer predictions within the component. In the present study the airfoil profile is taken as aerodynamically optimal and the objective of the search procedure is to find cooling structure variant that at given external conditions provides lower stresses, material temperature and indirectly coolant usage.

A flux damping control strategy was proposed to accelerate the decay of stator flux and restrain stator, rotor current and torque oscillation caused by grid voltage dips. Firstly, this paper analyzes the simplified mathematical model of DFIG during symmetrical voltage dips. Then, the mechanism of flux damping control strategy to restrain stator, rotor current oscillation and increase flux damping was analyzed. The flux damping control strategy can increase the damping of stator side, which accelerates the decay of the stator flux natural component and improve the dynamic LVRT performance of DFIG. The correctness and effectiveness of this method is verified by MATLAB/Simulink simulation results.

Cooling power constitutes a large portion of the total electrical power consumption in data centers. Approximately 25%∼40% of the electricity used within a production data center is consumed by the cooling system. Improving the cooling energy efficiency has attracted a great deal of research attention. Many strategies have been proposed for cutting the data center energy costs. One of the effective strategies for increasing the cooling efficiency is using dynamic thermal management. Another effective strategy is placing cooling devices (heat exchangers) closer to the source of heat. This is the basic design principle of many hybrid cooling systems and liquid cooling systems for data centers. Dynamic thermal management of data centers is a huge challenge, due to the fact that data centers are operated under complex dynamic conditions, even during normal operating conditions. In addition, hybrid cooling systems for data centers introduce additional localized cooling devices, such as in row cooling units and overhead coolers, which significantly increase the complexity of dynamic thermal management. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to characterize the dynamic responses of data centers under variations from different cooling units, such as cooling air flow rate variations. In this study, a detailed computational analysis of an in row cooler based hybrid cooled data center is conducted using a commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. A representative CFD model for a raised floor data center with cold aisle-hot aisle arrangement fashion is developed. The hybrid cooling system is designed using perimeter CRAH units and localized in row cooling units. The CRAH unit supplies centralized cooling air to the under floor plenum, and the cooling air enters the cold aisle through perforated tiles. The in row cooling unit is located on the raised floor between the server racks. It supplies the cooling air directly to the cold aisle, and intakes hot air from the back of the racks (hot aisle). Therefore, two different cooling air sources are supplied to the cold aisle, but the ways they are delivered to the cold aisle are different. Several modeling cases are designed to study the transient effects of variations in the flow rates of the two cooling air sources. The server power and the cooling air flow variation combination scenarios are also modeled and studied. The detailed impacts of each modeling case on the rack inlet air temperature and cold aisle air flow distribution are studied. The results presented in this work provide an understanding of the effects of air flow variations on the thermal performance of data centers. The results and corresponding analysis is used for improving the running efficiency of this type of raised floor hybrid data centers using CRAH and IRC units.

In São Paulo State, mainly in rural areas, the utilization of wooden poles is observed for different purposes. In this context, wood in contact with the ground presents faster deterioration, which is generally associated to environmental factors and, especially to the presence of fungi and insects. With the use of mathematical models, the useful life of wooden structures can be predicted by obtaining "climatic indexes" to indicate, comparatively among the areas studied, which have more or less tendency to fungi and insects attacks. In this work, by using climatological data of several cities at São Paulo State, a simplified mathematical model was obtained to measure the aggressiveness of the wood in contact with the soil.

For through-silicon optical probing of microprocessors, the heat generated by devices with power over 100W must be dissipated [1]. To accommodate optical probing, a seemingly elaborate cooling system that controls the microprocessor temperature from 60 to 100° C for device power up to 150W was designed [2]. The system parameters to achieve the desired thermal debug environment were cooling air temperature and air flow. A mathematical model was developed to determine both device temperature and input power. The 3-D heat equation that governs the temperature distribution was simplified to a case of a 1-D rod with one end at the device center and the other at the cooling air intake. Thus the cooling system was reduced to an analytical expression. From experimental data, we computed all coefficients in the model, then ran extensive tests to verify—the accuracy was better than 10% over the entire temperature and power ranges.
