This study investigated the attitudes of body-tanning behaviors: suntanning, tanning bed, tanning spray, and sunless tanning product use. Data collected from 208 female college students ( M age=19.8 yr., SD = 2.0; M weight = 63.3 kg, SD = 2.0; M height = 165.9cm, SD = 8.1) online. The questionnaire comprised four constructs: appearance-based, health-based, and emotion-based tanning attitudes, and body-tanning behaviors. Both appearance-based and emotion-based pro-tanning attitudes were associated with significantly higher body-tanning behaviors. However, health-based pro-tanning attitudes did not significantly affect body-tanning behaviors. The results from both UV- and non-UV exposure-related tanning behaviors provide future intervention strategies, such as establishing a positive body image without a tan and identifying negative emotional consequences as a result of tanning.

AbstractIntroduction: College students are highly vulnerable to the adoption of habits that pose risks to their health, including smoking and alcohol consumption which have an impact on the occurrence of chronic diseases. Therefore, preliminary information that allows to identify the factors associated with these habits is required for the planning of intervention strategies from the university context. Objective: To identify associations between alcohol consumption, smoking and demographic features in a group of college students. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was used with a sample of 360 men and 456 women (obtained by stratified random sampling). A survey was applied to them in order to establish alcohol consumption, tobacco use and demographic features. The data collection was carried out under the supervision and approval of the Ethics Committee of the University of Pamplona. The data analysis included frequency distribution in relation to smoking, alcohol consumption and other factors, and V Cramer test to establish association between variables. Results: The prevalence of tobacco is 15% and frequent alcohol consumption prevalence is 26%. Association between gender and alcohol consumption(p<0,001) and tobacco use (p<0,001) was found, where men are the most consumers. Besides, association between faculty and alcohol consumption (p=0,018) and tobacco use (p<0,001) was found. Conclusions: Tobacco and alcohol consumption was low in relation to prior studies. The variables of gender and faculty are associated to tobacco use and alcohol consumption. It is necessary to implement programs to prevent and decrease tobacco use and alcohol consumption in college students.

The existing dormitories seem to be excessively communized: they do not have any isolated emotional and psychological spaces that people need physically and psychologically for personal rest and reflection. Such an organization of residential premises of colleges does not meet many vital needs of students, as well as significantly reduces the learning effectiveness, which causes the relevance of this study. The article considers and summarizes the conclusions of modern psychologists concerning the interac-tion of students living in student dormitories. We analyzed the need for both communication and development, and solitude to rest from the social and psychological stress and for reflection. The problems of forming zones for various functional processes in an accommodation unit of student dormitories have been consid-ered due to the need to create a comfortable environment, optimally ensuring efficient basic scientific and educational activities of students, taking into account the psychological characteristics of youth development and issues of setting personal space and comfort zones by architectural means. Based on the analysis of the above features, we proposed schemes of functional zoning, recommended for use in student accommodation units. The objects of the study are buildings and their complexes designed for college students’ accommoda-tion. The subject is the formation of comfortable architectural solutions of student dwelling, corresponding to the specifics of students' psychological development and academic work. The purpose of the study is to develop proposals for the formation of the architecture of objects designed to accommodate students, taking into account their psychological features.

The goal of the study was to explore college students’ social tanning behavior based on their parental attachment and life satisfaction. The data were collected from a sample of 333 college students using a self-administered online survey tool. The questionnaire consisted of multi-item scales measuring parental attachment, life satisfaction, and social tanning behaviors (tanning bed use vs. sun tanning) along with demographic questions. The majority of the participants were female (80.2%) and Caucasian (76.9%), with an average age of 19.8 years. Results suggest that there is an association between having a high parental attachment and engaging in “social sun tanning.” College students who are highly satisfied with their life are less likely to use tanning beds with friends and families. Intervention strategies to deter harmful body-tanning should be designed to consider ways of improving quality of relationships and life.

The goal of the present study was to evaluate the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as an explanation for bystanders’ intention to help cyberbullying victims among college students. Participants completed an online survey in which their intention, attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control toward helping cyberbullying victims were assessed. In addition to these traditional TPB variables, empathy toward cyberbullying victims and anticipated regret from not helping victims were included in the model. Results showed that empathy and anticipated regret significantly predicted intention to help cyberbullying victims over and above the traditional TPB variables. Results also showed that gender altered how traditional TPB variables, empathy, and anticipated regret predict bystander’s intention to help cyberbullying victims: Empathy and anticipated regret were most robust predictors for males and females, respectively. These results suggest that the TPB is a useful theoretical framework for understanding bystanders’ intention to help cyberbullying victims. Implications for developing effective prevention and intervention strategies are discussed.

This study examined an instrument measuring the salience of an individual's identification with exercise as an integral part of the concept of self. The 9-item Exercise Identity Scale was given to 51 college students. Test-retest reliability (1 wk.) was. 93 and Cronbach alpha. 94. Assessment of the relationship between exercise identity scores and other variables related to participation in exercise documents evidence for validity. A measure of exercise identity may help identify persons least likely and most likely to maintain an exercise program and so may assist in the development of effective intervention strategies.
