Wan Abdul Rachman Forest Park (Tahura WAR) has experienced the fluctuations in land cover changes in each year. It caused by the interaction of community in utilization of Tahura WAR. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of interaction by the community around Tahura WAR and the influenced factors of it. The product moment correlation analysis was used to see the real relation between the independent variables (the level of interaction) and the dependent variable (land area, income, and the number of family dependents). The result showed that the interaction of the community in the Tahura WAR was moderate. It included the activity of community-related in utilization, preservation and forest protection. The level of interaction was influenced by the land area and the income level of the respondents. Keywords: interaction, Tahura WAR, land area, income.

Forest cover in Bengkulu is reduced. Data from WARSI shows, 1990 forest cover areas in the province are approximately 1,009,209 hectares or 50.4 % of the land area reaching 1,979,515 hectares. But now, it is only 685,762 hectares of the area of his blood. That is, the period of 25 years, there is a forest cover decline of 323,447 hectares. Forest and land cover changes are the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The purpose of this article is to see land cover changes based on carbon stock in the years 2009 and 2018. Model of land cover change based on carbon stock year 2028 and 2038. The method of this research uses the calculation of the Stock Difference Approach with spatial analysis of national land closure of Landsat imagery 2009-2018 and biomass data for forest inventory results Geographic Information System (GIS). The results of this research were the reduced forest area and the change in land use changed from 2009 and 2018. So carbon stock is also increasingly reduced.

Remote sensing/GIS techniques are a versatile tool for x-raying serial forest structural changes in retrospect. It would be impossible to evaluate past occurrences and changes in forest extents in past decades at Effan Forest Reserve without non-conventional means. Therefore, we adopted remote sensing technology using Landsat images to evaluate land-use change and degradation rates in the area with a view to ascertaining causal factors for possible minimization of forest degradation in Effan Forest Reserve. Land-use/land-cover changes were analyzed using USGS-Landsat TM and ETM images of 1987, 2002, 2014 and 2019. Field-data were collected using handheld GPS receiver and spatial statistical analyses were conducted using the ground control points (GCPs). For inventory data, a systematic sampling technique was adopted using ten 1.05 km-transects at 500 m intervals. A total of 50 sample plots of 50 × 50 m were used. All tree species with Dbh ≥10 cm were enumerated. Nineteen tree species in ten families were encountered with Vitellaria paradoxa as the most-frequently occurring species in the area. IUCN-listed endangered Pterocarpus erinaceus, hitherto abundant in the area, was rarely encountered during the survey, while Vitellaria paradoxa is gradually shrinking, going the relative abundance in the area. The result further showed that primary and secondary forests decreased considerably by 258.03 ha (46.72%) and 9.18 ha (3.63%), respectively, with a total forest loss of 50.3% in 32 years (8.4 hayr-1, 1.6% per annum). While forest plantation size doubled by 369.72 ha within the period. This is worrisome as the remaining fragmented forests appeared to be on the decline, except the riparian vegetation, due to inaccessibility to the riparian by loggers. It thus appeared that forest protection approaches were ineffective. Increased protection efforts could save this forest reserve, and the concerned authority should consider a focused-enrichment planting involving indigenous species for ecosystem-repair.

An urban heat island (UHI) is a phenomenon that shows a higher temperature in urban areas compared to surrounding rural areas due to the impact of impervious surface (IS) density, and other anthropogenic activities including changes of land use/land cover (LULC). The purpose of this research is to examine the spatiotemporal land-use/land-cover changes and their impact on the surface UHI (SUHI) in Kandy City, Sri Lanka, using Landsat data and geospatial techniques. LULC classification was made by using a pixel-oriented supervised classification method, and LULC changes were computed by using a cross-cover comparison. The SUHI effect was discussed mainly through the variation of land-surface temperature (LST) over persistent IS and newly added IS. The study showed the dynamics of each LULC and its role in the SUHI. The results showed that IS areas expanded from 529 to 1514 ha (2.3% to 6.7% of the total land area) between 1996 and 2006, and to 5833 ha (23.9% of the total land area) in 2017, with an annual growth rate of 11.1% per year from 1996 to 2006 and 12.2% per year from 2006 to 2017. A gradually declining trend was observed in forest areas. Persistent IS reported the highest mean LST areas compared to newly added IS. The mean LST difference between persistent IS and newly added IS was 1.43 °C over the study period. This is because areas of persistent IS are typically surrounded by IS even in their neighborhoods, whereas areas of newly added IS occur at the edges of the city and are, therefore, cooled by the surrounding nonurban surfaces. This calls for appropriate green-oriented landscape-management methods to mitigate the impact of the SUHI in Kandy City. The findings of the study showed that LULC changes and their effect on the SUHI from 1996 to 2017 made a significant contribution to long records of change dynamics.
