The Difference

In the wind tunnel facility, a test structure is often used for measuring its vibrational response to the aerodynamic excitation. A support is needed to sustaining the structure and it is mandatory that this support does not influence the vibrational energy to be measured. To this aim, the maximum amount of energy decoupling between the structure and the support is desired. This work is focused around a quick method to estimate this decoupling by using simplified models for the Turbulent Boundary Layer (TBL) excitation and for the structural response. Specifically, the Equivalent Rain-on-the-roof excitation is invoked with a Statistical Energy Analysis model for the structure. Some simple design rules are proposed and based on little information leading to foresee the difference of vibrational velocity levels between the two structural systems. A simplified test-case is used for the first investigations and a complex structure is finally conceived thinking to vibroacoustic measurements in a large wind tunnel facility. Although some results are largely expected, the global approach is promising.

AbstractMid-infrared (IR) spectral region is of immense importance for astronomy, medical diagnosis, security and imaging due to the existence of the vibrational modes of many important molecules in this spectral range. Therefore, there is a particular interest in miniaturization and integration of IR optical components. To this end, 2D van der Waals (vdW) crystals have shown great potential owing to their ease of integration with other optoelectronic platforms and room temperature operation. Recently, 2D vdW crystals of $$\alpha$$ α -$$\hbox {MoO}_{3}$$ MoO 3 and $$\alpha$$ α -$$\hbox {V}_2 \hbox {O}_5$$ V 2 O 5 have been shown to possess the unique phenomenon of natural in-plane biaxial hyperbolicity in the mid-infrared frequency regime at room temperature. Here, we report a unique application of this in-plane hyperbolicity for designing highly efficient, lithography free and extremely subwavelength mid-IR photonic devices for polarization engineering. In particular, we show the possibility of a significant reduction in the device footprint while maintaining an enormous extinction ratio from $$\alpha$$ α -$$\hbox {MoO}_{3}$$ MoO 3 and $$\alpha$$ α -$$\hbox {V}_2$$ V 2 $$\hbox {O}_5$$ O 5 based mid-IR polarizers. Furthermore, we investigate the application of sub-wavelength thin films of these vdW crystals towards engineering the polarization state of incident mid-IR light via precise control of polarization rotation, ellipticity and relative phase. We explain our results using natural in-plane hyperbolic anisotropy of $$\alpha$$ α -$$\hbox {MoO}_{3}$$ MoO 3 and $$\alpha$$ α -$$\hbox {V}_2$$ V 2 $$\hbox {O}_5$$ O 5 via both analytical and full-wave electromagnetic simulations. This work provides a lithography free alternative for miniaturized mid-infrared photonic devices using the hyperbolic anisotropy of $$\alpha$$ α -$$\hbox {MoO}_{3}$$ MoO 3 and $$\alpha$$ α -$$\hbox {V}_2$$ V 2 $$\hbox {O}_5$$ O 5 .

In this research, influence of adding Li2CO3 (at 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%) on electrical and magnetic properties of [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]Fe2O4 (with 60% Ni and 40% Mg) ferrite has been studied. The samples are prepared by solid state reaction method and sintered at 1300∘C for 6[Formula: see text]h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show the samples belong to single-phase cubic structure without any impurity phase. The magnetic properties (saturation magnetization and coercivity) of the samples have been investigated by VSM and found that the higher concentration of Li2CO3 reduces the hysteresis loss. DC resistivity increases with Li2CO3 contents whereas it decreases initially and then becomes constant at lower value with temperature which indicates that the studied samples are semiconductor. The dielectric dispersion occurs at a low-frequency regime and the loss peaks are formed in a higher frequency regime, which are due to the presence of resonance between applied frequency and hopping frequency of charge carriers. Notably, the loss peaks are shifted to the lower frequency with Li2CO3 additions.

The application of Lamb waves to damage and/or defect detection in structures is typicallyconfined to lower frequencies in regimes where only the lower order modes propagate in order to simplifyinterpretation of the scattered wave-fields. Operation at higher frequencies offers the potentialto extend the sensitivity and diagnostic capability of this technique, however there are technical challengesassociated with the measurement and interpretation of this data. Recent work by the authorshas demonstrated the ability of fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) to measure wave-fields at frequencies inexcess of 2 MHz [1]. However, when this work was extended to other thinner plate specimens it wasfound that at these higher frequencies, the cyanoacrylate adhesive (M-Bond 200) used to attach theFBG sensors to the plate was significantly affecting the propagation of the waves. Laser vibrometrywas used to characterise the wave-field in the region surrounding the adhesive and it was found that theself-adhesive retro-reflective tape applied to aid with this measurement was also affecting the wavefieldin the higher frequency regime. This paper reports on an experimental study into the influence ofboth of these materials on the propagating wave-field. Three different lengths of retro-reflective tapewere placed in the path of Lamb waves propagating in an aluminium plate and laser vibrometry wasused to measure the wave-field upstream and downstream of the tape for a range of different excitationfrequencies. The same experiment was conducted using small footprint cyanoacrylate film samplesof different thickness. The results show that both of these surface-mount materials attenuate, diffractand scatter the incoming waves as well as introducing a phase lag. The degree of influence of thesurface layer appears to be a function of its material properties, the frequency of the incoming waveand the thickness and footprint of the surface layer relative to the base material thickness. Althoughfurther work is required to characterise the relative influence of each of these variables, investigationsto date show that for the measurement of Lamb Waves on thin structures, careful considerationshould be given to the thickness and footprint of the adhesive layer and sensor, particularly in the highfrequency regime, so as to minimise their effect on the measurement.
